Not talented (or well coached) enough

A respectful nod to @Bethlehemjohn's recent post. ;)

But seriously, we're not. We have some good pieces, but we have too many holes. Not enough shooters. Not enough beef inside. Poor free throw shooting. And no system we can rely on when we are facing adversity and need a basket.

We shot for sh*t from 3 but there was good news. Ish didn't contribute to that.

...

Oh, that's right, he didn't even shoot one. Our #2 guard was 0-0 from 3 and had a whopping 4 points in 32 minutes. Time to see more bench, IMHO.

As opposed to Hinson being 2-11 from 3 and 4-16 overall. Not gonna win many games when Blake shoots like that.

Blake, Bub, and GDG were 5-25 from 3. Team went 5-29. This team can't win shooting like that.

I know. I was merely pointing out that Ish has been bad, too, and his ineptitude seems to be getting overlooked. He was invisible versus Syracuse and invisible tonight. He was brought in here with a reputation of being able to score. Against better competition he hasn't been getting it done. And when your #2 guard isn't a threat, it allows teams to focus on the guy who is.

The funniest thing about your post…you’re getting on Ish for only having 4 pts in 32 minutes of game time. Those 4 pts were actually the 1st 4 pts of the game if I’m remembering correctly. The game score was 4-0 Pitt for a good bit at the outset of the game.

Not getting on you or your post, just found it ironic his measely 4 pts in 32 minutes of game time were the 1st 2 baskets of the game.

Bad 3 point shooting nights happen. But this team is having a miserable time shooting 2s. We were 16-39 from 2. 41% from 2 is bad. We were 43% from 2 vs Syracuse. This is indicative of a few things:

- no natural PG - Bub can score but he doesn't get others easy looks, time to move him over and start Lowe

- no inside presence getting easy buckets or put backs

- not running good enough offense

Doesn't seem like many Pitt players get easy looks. Capel has no plan on offense. There doesn't seem to be any set plays to get anyone open. I was at the game and my whole section were commenting what kind of cluster@&#%@ the offense is. He doesn't coach, doesn't gameplan, doesn't make any good in-game adjustments. He just lets his guys run around and play streetball. That gameplan hasn't worked in the vast majority of seasons he's been Pitt's head coach.

Last year we had a bunch of good senior leaders to settle things down and do things differently. This season Capel' terrible coaching rears its ugly head again. And throw in the rest of his useless staff too.

I would say that having Nelly be the floor general really helped last year. Bub can score but he plays the point like Jamel Artis. Time to move him over and start Lowe and see if that helps

Lowe has to start at this point.

Our best lineup right now is Lowe/Bub/Blake/GDG and take your pick.

Adding to that: we usually had 4 guys on the floor last year capable of scoring and at least 3 who were deep threats. So, we could spread the floor more and get open looks. Teams couldn't key on one guy like they are doing now with Hinson. On top of that, we were a very good foul shooting team. We got a lot of points at the line.

After 6 years of HCJC, though, this is the only formula that has worked. Maybe if we finally get a true ACC-level center in here we'll find another way that works. Our bigs not only get tossed around like rag dolls but can't throw a good screen. Either way, it's clear to anyone watching, we do not have a system like we did in the JD years. And unless we're bringing in elite talent, we're not going to have consistent success without one.

We definitely could use 2 or 3 set plays .
We do space well on offense , I’ll say that much -
But it’s live or die by the 3.
We need to diversify our offense

Defense - we’ve made the move to zone more than usual - but our weaknesses in the post just aren’t going to be overcome with scheme .

Problem, a big problem (aside from missing wide open shots) is even though we space well, we just have no inside offensive presence unless it is on a pick and roll, or a break like the Tapas to Tapas beautiful play last night or Bubs feeding them for a dunk. So if we aren't hitting threes, and have no go to inside, it is really a struggle.

I’m under no delusion we are going to post up-
I’m more talking about dribble dives to the rim
