** I’d like to think I know a little bit about College Basketball. I’d like to think I know a decent team when I see it.

** A few days ago, a fellow poster called me out for perhaps jinxing this team when I proclaimed, “We are BACK!” I understood the poster’s notion. But I said what I said because I was pretty convinced I was watching a pretty decent team a couple weeks ago.

** Sure, others rightfully warned that this was still the same group of guys who were torched by St. Francis, PA. Several more recalled how our Panthers had tanked after decent play in Capel’s first two years. Both of those facts did not leave my mind. But I felt like our Panthers had turned a corner.

** Well … there’s no doubt now how wrong I was. Maybe I don’t know much about College Basketball after all.

** What I do know is that in a span of two weeks, we’ve watched a fall from what might have been the most impressive performance by a Jeff Capel coached Pitt basketball team to the most discouraging performance by a Jeff Capel coached Pitt basketball team.

** I sure hate it when your team loses by 26 and deep down you know it should have been by much more.

** Another problem was that none of our “typical villians” played any significant role in the loss. Champ got plenty of shots. Xavier didn’t shoot too much nor did he even turn it over problematically. Terrell Brown barely even played. Many of the guys who we wanted instead of the guys we don’t like played more this time out. And Trey McGowens is in Nebraska.

** So maybe those things weren’t the problem.

** The biggest problem tonight for sure tonight is that no one played defense. Not one Panther. Not one.

** Another reason I thought we were a really decent team two weeks ago was because of much improved defensive communication and continuity. None of that was on display at all, not to mention any real defensive effort. It wasn’t just that the Panthers looked powerless to stop ND, like they looked against UNC. Instead, it didn’t look they were particularly interested in doing so.

** When this was so painfully evident was at the beginning of the second half. The Panthers started with what might have been their best defensive possession of the game and forced a turnover. After blowing the layup, the Panthers gave up three totally wide jumpers in the span of 70 seconds and this game was over.

** After our brutal first half defense, I truly expected our Panthers to buckle down in the second half and make a game of this. But instead, the Panthers simply quit on that end once the game got to 19.

** Maybe they never even got started on the offensive end. While our guys moved the ball, and even took care of it satisfactorily, shooting 18 first half threes was simply ridiculous.

** Have our guys simply forgotten each and every thing that made them a pretty decent team?

** Whether or not we were ever really a pretty decent team, it’s hard not to think something important has fractured. The episode between Capel and Horton was troubling to watch. But I’m not going to proclaim that Capel has lost the team, or there is some sort of rotten causing performance like this one.

** But what we can say is that the team has completely lost their focus for the time being. And the Panthers had a pretty tremendous focus for about a month.

** I wish I could say that what’s going on with the team can be corrected. Maybe it can. Maybe not. But no more predictions or proclamations from me this season. Especially since it’s now more evident to me that I may not even know one thing about College Basketball. Or at least this team.

My wife says I need to have a more positive outlook, so in light of her sage advice here it is...

At least we don't have to worry about Dook or some other program head hunting Capel from us.

LOL -- I don't think anyone should be told to have a more positive outlook after a game like this one.

Capel's MO, collapse city in the second half of seasons.

I was very critical of Stallings and how he handled the personalities on his teams. IMO it is really concerning that there was such consensus last year that Trey was holding the team back, yet here we are again tonight with XJ fouling out with 11 minutes left and Horton walking off the floor.

I posted in another thread a little while ago that each of Capel's first two seasons featured a collapse after about mid-January, and here we are. I can give him the benefit of the doubt once or twice, but this team was clearly better than those and looked to be on a tournament trajectory.

I think this was the worst team and staff effort since Stallings got ejected in the 50pt Louisville loss. Capel has a lot of explaining to do.

DT,

Notre Dame passed the ball without putting it on the floor, while we dibbled and launched...too many easy transitions for ND...

Lack of intensity and focus...as hard as it was for me to watch, I have to think Capel was burning inside and hopefully, this will light a fuse for the team.

The good news is no one might believe in them now, they won’t read press clippings touting their greatness, and now, discover they have to believe in each other!

Hail to PITT!

Nice summary of the big picture.

My crack at the pieces.

As X goes, so goes Pitt. He hasn’t been good lately.

Toney now MIA for 2.5 games. when was the last non layup he has hit? I don’t recognize him on the court.

we miss Hugley a lot.

Jeffress looked worse than he had in any previous game. He looked clueless as to what he wanted to do and how to do it.

Amadasun looks physical and strong enough to rebound. I don’t know if he understands defensive responsibilities, but I do know he needs told not to shot.

Sinbadie looks terribly tentative. Passes up open shots for second guessed shots, out of rhythm later in the shot clock.

Making one general observation: The entire team looks tentative. we seemed to have such great chemistry and were sharing the ball, passing well and getting great shots, even working as a team defensively. Where did that go? Where did our toughness go? Where did our effort go?

Could the loss to Wake have caused all this? The stolen car episode and everything tied to it? Just the loss of Hugley?

How could we go from Duke and both Syracuse performances to this?

It is a puzzle.

The other thing, I watched Drumgoole when he came in...I was pleased with his hustling on D, and he showed a nice stroke on his three...yes, it was in the final minutes of the game, but give the young man credit for his desire and his hustle.

I suspect Toney contributed a whole lot to the personality conflict last year. Two years in a row he’s seemed to check out after a teammate had a stretch of good games and got some good publicity.

I don't even think the "as X goes, Pitt goes" postulate works as well tonight. The hole Pitt crawled into wasn't caused by him any more than anyone else. NO ONE was defending.

attempting to claim victory in one thread and totally contradict yourself in another. Message board hero at it again.

he's been a shell of.. I wouldn't even say "himself". Not sure if 1st half of year Toney is who he is.. but he's obviously reverted back to what he's been the 1st two years.

Let me spell it out for you:
This team showed promise and is still rated higher than the past two seasons. The players and staff still show all the gaps they ever have, and it’s possible that we can still finish 13th or 14th. The wheels are coming off for the third year in a row and that’s on HCJC.

You claimed this team is not “remotely comparable” to 18 and 19 and I am pretty damn sure tonight proves they are.

This was an audition year for a transfer for toney for anyone who is close to him.

with everything that’s been posted here and the fact that we have 0 commits I just don’t see a way this ends well for Capel here
That's my question too.
And my concern.
You don't make it your 3rd year fine.
But by your 4th that's a problem.
Something slipped out from beneath you

those ND possessions followed by Pitt possessions in the start of the second half were truly a sight to see.

My primary observation from last night was how could ND have lost 9 games this season !

They moved the ball effectively as good teams do and found the open guys who subsequently knocked down their shots no matter how how far behind the 3 pt line they were .

Pitt had their opportunities last night , they missed as many wide open threes as ND made .

ND had two guys hitting bombs and more powerful guys inside , seems like a pretty good formula for victory.

Pitts biggest weakness as a team is that other JC they don’t really have any other offensively talented players to stay with any team that get hots . The last few games Toney has reverted back to the guy who I cringed when he shot the ball and Horton despite going 3-6 from three just isn’t the offensive force he was advertised and needs to be . The freshman aren’t ready and losing Hugley was a big loss .

The easy analysis is blame the loss on lack of effort , poor defense and coaching . Good teams and good players always find a way to get open and hit their shots . Good players also make their shots even when they’re defended well , that’s what makes them special. Opposing teams know that JC is scoring and rebounding like an All American and yet they can’t seem to stop him . That’s what good players do .

In the last two losses Pitt played teams that played their best games of the season and Pitt still had a chance to win the Wake game . Last night ND was just too good and they’d have beaten just about anyone last night .

Pitt has defeated Syracuse twice , FSU and Duke this season , three teams who yr in yr recruit far more talented players than Pitt , the potential to become a good team is here . They excitement generated by those victories made too many posters believe the program is further along than it really is . They’re headed in the right direction , but they’re re nothing more than a bubble team at best right now .

I’ll say this again, there will be some great wins and some bad loses this season . Both the program and the roster is going in the right direction , maybe not as fast as we were fooled into thinking a few games ago , but I for one haven’t lost faith in the process.

Agree with all of that

I’m more disturbed that toney gave so little effort
That seemed out of character for him

The space between the ears is measured in inches, but the brain carries millions of miles of blood vessels.
The trip is more circuitous for some.

There are definitely some issues with Capel. These are kids and they are immature. But he's the coach and he's accountable for their performances and preparation. Both have been dismal the past 2 games. We don't have the 4* and 5* guys that can just go out there and play at high levels regardless of coaching. These guys need coaching and development and they aren't getting it.

And recently, their efforts on defense have been disgusting and totally inadequate. That's where they lose their games. No effort, no preparation. What do they do between games to prepare? Play XBox? It sure seems that way.

As one poster accurately put it, we definitely don't have to worry about Duke or anyone coming after Capel now. We're stuck with him for a while.

You are right. WE were horrendous.

Maybe our floor leader by not fouling out with a quarter of the game remaining and having a better line than he did, could have made the team around him better.

TB had absolutely nothing to do with the result last night . Pitt played poorly and ND played great .

Had Pitt destroyed ND playing like ND did everyone would be proclaiming these Panthers a sweet sixteen team ! Give ND some credit they played a great game . ( and I hate ND athletics!)

Came in Pitt up 20-19.

Exited ND up 27-22.

Not saying he is the reason we lost.

Since the Duke game, AT has become almost exclusively a perimeter-oriented player on offense. Taking jumping shots and not crashing the glass for OR’s very much. The whole team seems to be settling for jumpers and playing like a finesse team. Very puzzling. And disturbing.
