I've been a long time lurker on this board and very infrequent poster, but I just wanted to get some input from some of you guys who've been to South Bend. Myself and two buddies will be leaving Friday afternoon and staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites in South Bend Friday and Saturday night. Any recommendations on what to check out on gameday or any restaurants/nightlife will be very appreciated. I know Pitt will be having an Alumni tailgate, but any other tailgating thoughts are welcome.

Here's hoping for our big upset of the year and Hail to Pitt!

Good bar food/ resteraunt/ sandwich place called Between the Buns is very solid. Very big very cheap beers and good sandwiches.
Then night life there’s a place called The Linebacker that gets pretty fun post game/late night
Me and 5 of my friends hit these spots after the close loss 6 years ago, and had an absolute blast
Enjoy and H2P

I've been to ND maybe a dozen times over the years and for 4-5 Pitt/ND games. It's one of the best and most unique college football environments in the country. My advice especially for some guys going down for the first time is to spend most of your pre-game time on campus. Tailgating at ND is about like it is anywhere else but the on-campus gameday environment is unique and is really what it's all about. Get there early and walk around , check out all the landmarks like the grotto, the golden dome, touchdown Jesus, etc. There are student organizations and groups all over the place selling food, some of which is really good--like the steak sandwiches. The bagpipers fire up at the golden dome at about 10:30, the Irish Guard and cheerleaders are there. There is a big "fanfest" football-oriented carnival with live music, former D players, etc. that goes on at the track facility. The team walks the central campus quad to the stadium a couple hours before the game and that's worth seeing. Lot of good cool stuff to see and do, and I think you'll find the ND faithful to be gracious and welcoming, it's a real point of pride there.

As far as bars it's pretty limited. Legends is in the parking lot just south of the stadium, the Linebacker Lounge is a legendary ND dive bar, there are beer/cocktail tents on campus with big screen TVs etc. South Bend itself is a dump and the ND campus is like an oasis in the middle of the desert.

It's a great college football environment and I've seen a few lifelong ND haters become converts after visiting the campus for a home game. Get there early, soak it all in, and have a great time.

The game day experience is awesome but get ready for ND fans being “too nice”. Last game there PITT was getting hosed and people around me were like “sorry kid Pitt played a tough game hope you enjoyed South Bend.” I hate those people.

Pitt with the big W this weekend. Wake up the echos Duzz!

The North and South dining halls are open on gamedays for a pregame brunch. Also open after the game. I went there once with a Notre Dame buddy. Food was good and price was reasonable.

I guess it all depends on what you want for Friday/Saturday night. There are some traditional college bars close to campus that will be overrun with students. I'd take an Uber into downtown South Bend (which btw isn't a dump anymore like the poster said above). Some fun bars - The Exchange Whiskey Bar, Fiddler's Hearth, Spirited, Finnies Next Door to name a few. It will be hopping - lots of hotels now down there. (LaSalle Kitchen and Tavern too.)

I concur with dining at South Halls. A buffet with everything fresh and it lasted me all day. You can catch the band and the glee club performing in there if you hit it right. The burgers being cooked by the various student groups are tempting on the lawn areas.

Fiddler's Hearth in South Bend if you like Irish food and they have entertainment on the weekends. There's a Buffalo Wild Wings nearby if you want to watch other college football action Saturday night after dinner.

Gameday experience: Trumpets Under the Dome, get there early for a better place to stand. Notre Dame's band plays on the steps of Bond Hall before the game so you can catch the halftime show early and then get something to eat, drink and go to the bathroom at halftime.

This should be very helpful To rab7607.

It pretty much nailed the experience and the places to visit (Legend’s and the Backer” and you are right about the ND faithful who indeed are incredibly warm and hospitable.

I’ve gone to the games with one of my two ND buddies. There are a few places Inwentnro that are more for ND alumni and players that I only got to do becasue I was with them.

Check out this link below too if you haven’t already- everything they mentioned I’ve experienced and is worth seeing... be sure to visit the Grotto. It’s a special experience.

Thanks for all the input. Definitely going to spend a lot of time on campus before the game.

Ditto on the Grotto

I always stay in Chicago and come down on game day. I concur that the on campus food is very good. I usually have dinner back at Ditka’s in Chicago.
