"Oakland, he asserted, is the only innovation district in the country that isn’t growing."

I always envisioned it in that hazelwood project area on the river. I mean private land already owned with a million other issues that would make this impossible but yeah, would have been cool.

On the river, boats coming in from across river in south side. Call your buddy who owns a boat for some water tailgates.

Might as well just stay at HF.

Yeah, Hazelwood would be cool if we started a full lower campus down there and maybe connected them via a people mover or something (I know, very WVU+esque). But it is kind of far away as a stand alone stadium.

Yea, most people don't realize WVU's stadium isn't "on-campus." There is a residential neighborhood and a few miles which separates its stadium from its campus. But because the law school is over there plus a dorm building, people consider it its campus.

A Hazelwood stadium would have been cool if it was part of an entertainment district and a satellite campus. Build a couple dorms and a few education buildings and oila, its on campus. A monorail would be cool but that would never happen. Hazelwood isnt much further from lower campus than the upper campus is so a simple shuttle system would suffice.

When there is no pro team it doesn't matter as much where the stadium is. However, in Pitt's case I think it really matters where the stadium sits.

I dont think it really matters much where Pitt plays. What does matter is the size of the stadium. There is no homefield advantage in a 70K seat stadium and no atmosphere

My mother set foot in our Ratwood Street apartment ONE TIME. One time, that was it.

She told me that she could not believe that I had chosen to live in such a disgusting dump.

Pitt should buy every piece of land to Bates Street and knock them down and start over.

I don't think there is a defined process that is being sidestepped. I think the residents expect to be able to write their neighborhood plan -- at their convenience -- before any development is considered. Looks like they want to be able to require any development to include affordable housing but that's not a requirement at the moment.

All the planning department does is try to steer projects to a point where they "fit" the strategic plan. The planning commission is the nuts and bolts of making sure the project fits the legal requirements of the city code while considering waivers and so on. So the "strategic planning" people can say, you have to have affordable housing and then the developer goes to the planning commission and probably gets a waiver to reduce or eliminate it, within reason, or something.
I'm assuming these locals are on medicare. Community involvement is good but it shouldn't stop projects wanted by the university community. Without Pitt what would Oakland be? I'm not there but I hear the frustration. Not sure people who are going to be dead in 20 years should call the shots.

Oakland Planning would f*ck that plan right up

They absolutely should. It would be a 50 year plan. I mean they already bought almost the entire block between Bouquet and Oakland Ave, outside of 4 houses, which apparently won't sell. No reason they shouldn't be doing this in all of South Oakland, at least north of Bates and east of the Blvd. Oakland Ave, Meyran, Atwood, McKee, Halket needs to be bought, demolished with new Pitt buildings, green space, and dorms/apartments

It actually is kind of “on campus”. Yes there is a neighborhood (I lived there) and hospital and law school but I am guessing at least half of all student residency is within 3-4 blocks walking distance of the stadium. Not unlike where old Pitt Stadium is as compared with everything south of Forbes.

The so-called Development guy Peduto brought from Toledo is a subsidized housing specialist. So expect more projects in the suburbs.

It's kind of on campus because it's a part of the Evansdale Campus where the freshman dorms are just down the street, which is separate from those other dorms you're talking about. But the key is that the students get to walk to the game instead of everyone driving. If only they could move the medical complex over to 705-they're running out of room across from the stadium.

That's exactly what I said. I would say that 70% of the resident students (non commuters) at WVU is within an easy 15 minute walk to the stadium. Now if you live downtown, at the far end of High Street and up towards Richwood Ave, yeah it's a haul. But most students live in Evansdale, Sunnyside and by the hospital area (off of Willowdale). So it is definitely "on campus".

They're talking about it, but it's going to be the OC Lot or nowhere with all the land acquisition and zoning issues that come with other sites.

I am aware there are issues with the OC Lot site as well. I'm just telling you what I know.

You can tell if they’re the old original residents based on whether or not there are kitchen chairs in the street in front of the homes to hold parking places.😉

Used to see them all time when I was a kid going to games at Forbes Field. Then when I was going to Pitt and living in S Oakland. 😄

Who is talking about what? A new stadium?

I'm sure the planning commision would just love a new football stadium. If it ever came to pass, Pitt better have the deal completely done before they announce it . Otherwise, the complaining from all the various groups and constituencies will be overwhelming.
