I could be wrong, but does anybody besides me think we need a upgrade on the offensive coordinator position ? When you talk about up grades and position talent doesn't or shouldn't that include coaching ? I think Narduzzi and the rest of the staff are doing a great job, especially for their first season. But c'mon aren't we tired of slow starts or being behind every game ? Bad, non aggressive play calling ? Defensives with 7 players in the box on first down and we still try to run between the tackles consistently ? You can do that with YSU and win but as we see you can't do it with good teams like ND.,NC , and Iowa. We matched the Irish in the second half but unfortunately we spotted them 3 touchdowns and a 18 point lead in the first half. And you cannot put it all on defense (or bad officiating). Look around the country and you see multiple games with high scoring offenses. Just not PITT. Did you see what Carolina did to Duke ? I could be wrong but we should be no less than 8-1 right now. The common factor in all games is the slow starts. That's why Pitt is known as a 4th quarter team (and in every game it is stated). For once can't we start strong and fast, put our foot on a teams jugular and go for the kill. That type of win IN any or all of the three remaining games will make a difference with bowl committees. Based on the last two weeks results with common opponent Pitt should beat Duke by at least 21. Bet it doesn't happen thanks to another slow start.

I've been critical of Chaney but I want him around next year. I am seeing different things, formations, usage of different personnel, that I like. Plus, I think it takes some time here to implement the system. I am not a Chaney apologist at all, very critical and disappointed in our QB play, Nate has gotten worse over the last few weeks.. But not ready for a wholesale change just yet..

I dont believe that Chaney is the only reason the O is struggling. Im sure there is stuff he can change but dropped passes a d whiffed pass protection by the RB dont help. And if we do run with 7 or 8 in the box and successful at it. That will greatly open up the passing game, my inly beef is that we need to keep ollison in the game more and grind out 4 to 5 yards a play.

I don't know but its about time-
the d gets a couple early stops and
the o gets a couple early scores-
had enough of this terminal behind the 8 ball

Great Post and I agree with many of your points, but I am now at my view that Pitt Players need to execute the Game Plan better, more than the coaches needing to be replaced!

I say so because many Pitt players have letdown the Team at critical times by dropping Passes, not Blocking, and Running the Ball with the zest and abilities even when the holes were there?

I was a tad upset when Chaney went with Peterman and that caused some delays and adjustments, but losing Conners and some Blockers really hurt this Team, and even with Chad at QB, without Conners, that was a tall task of learning to adjust to a New OC, QB, OLs, RBs, and developing new WRs.

The Plays were often there the last few games but dropped passes and Peterman holding onto the Ball, double coverage's without better execution from all the other players is not on the coaches anymore by this 10 game? As I see it!!

Now I still think the OC could use more innovation on using both Tight Ends because Orndoff has the speed and play at running and Wideout at time plus is able to throw the ball. Orndoff and Holtz can catch the short passes and run as well as block down field on sweeps.

The addition of Whitehead will add to opening up Boyd at the right times and can be a double one two punch of talent of running after a catch or run?

I still think Chad Unit of Running should be used more by 5 to 8 plays and not be abandon. Yet, it is so important to prepare and repeat the offense at practice, so I leave that to Chaney. Whitehead in a Wildcat could be something special at times too!

Moreover, I don't why, but I really feel this Team on Offense is ready for a Breakout Game this week against Duke! Whitehead should have been used by the 7th game not the 8th and 9th, but that learning curve needs to to intensified now more than ever to save the season.

But now up to the Players to Execute better and not make mistakes and win these next 3 Games to have a chance at 10-3 and just go out a have a Great Recruiting Year to build upon!

Only if Chaney & OLs, WRS, and RBS Staff, cannot coach up then players to execute better would I consider replacing him, and I leave that up to Coach Pat in any case he is the CEO and calls his Staff.

All I know and can share on the Lair is I am very happy to see Coach Narduzzi's Coaching being innovative every game on Offense, Defense and Special Teams. He is a terrific coach to change the Attitude as they play all 4 Quarters in every game, as adapted a new wrinkle and boldly going for big plays on 3rd and 4th downs, and he can only coach up so much.

At some point, all his Players has to respond and not just 4 or 5, but all of them, this is the perfect time to put it all together and play on Offense all Game Long All 4 Quarters with better Player Execution.

I am excited for this coming game and I think they can Bushwhack Duke, but even Narduzzi does not know if they will do it, based on the articles I read. If Pitt Players had just Executed 4 to 5 Great Offensive Plays in UNC and had Whitehead in, I think they would have won.

The ND game was different, they were just bigger, faster, and better and the Coaching has to convince the Top Recruits to make Pitt It!

The offense didn't have any problems until the NC game. Lack of execution and what I think was a good defense. ND is very talented on defense.

There have been some situations that might have gone differently but everyone seems to forget that the offense put up big drives against Iowa, GT, and Syracuse late in those games.

I agree, the offense was coming up large until our last two games. Part of it is questionable play calling, but I've got to think most of our issues stem from talent disparity. We are probably 7-2 (at worst) right now with Conner and I've got to think the NC game is a toss-up with him in there.

I disagree. The offense had some nice big drives at the end of games, but hasn't been that good all season. Having said that, losing Conner was a huge blow and it's not surprising that the offense wasn't humming along. I think there were some very encouraging signs from the ND game. Pitt starting opening things up in the passing game and using Whitehead on offense gives us another big play threat.

I think the offense is going to be a lot better for the remainder of the season.

Firstly, can't go by comparative scores, and we should not beat Duke by 21. Vegas experts think that Duke should beat us by 3.5. Duke has one of the best coaches in the country, and they will be prepared and ready for Pitt. This game will be a challenge. That being said, I think Pitt can win, of course, if they play well. Now, regarding Chaney. He was a helluva find for Narduzzi. A high-profile OC, with great experience in all types of offenses. Most Pitt fans were elated to get him. The offense has struggled at times, despite expectations being very high with the returnees from last year. But, with Conner out, Voytik beaten out, and some new OL, we have one of the impact players from last year left and many new personnel. I think Chaney needs time to not only put his system in, but also to get the personnel to be productive in his system. He has opened up the offense lately, has diversified play calling, and is putting his players in a position to have an impact. Can't ask for much else. Let's see how the rest of this season plays out, and how next season goes, then we can better judge Chaney and the offense. JMO, but that seems fair.

I liked a lot of the play calling by Coach Chaney in the 1st Q against ND. He throws in a head-scratcher call every now and then, but what OC doesn't? Pitt could have scored a TD on the first drive if TB catches that endzone pass or if ND is called for pass interference on that play.

T. Boyd dropped some balls he normally catches, as did JP. If ND hadn't held Challingsworth, he would have been behind everybody on that play where T. Boyd was going to pass...

I was disappointed in the deep in-completion to Boyd that hit the ND guy on the back of the helmet. If NP puts some air under that ball, instead of throwing a line-drive, Boyd could have made a play on it. One thing you saw the UNC QB do all game long was put plenty of air under all the deep throws.

Overall, I think Chaney has been creative --- (except for when he isn't. :))

Go Pitt.

I have questioned some of the things Chaney has done but seriously, it is a bit early to start wanting the guy out. Pitt is nowhere near the talent level they are going to need going forward. We need to let this staff settle in and figure things out. No one puts the finished product out there first. losing an AA tailback and starting out with only one viable receiver is a tough way to start new regime.

Our main problem is that our OL is not run-blocking well at all and we dont have RBs who are talented enough to hit the hole and break tackles. Conner spoiled us and made the OL look better than what it was.

If you asked me what I was most disappointed with this season, I would say OL play.

I think Chaney is terrible, but the ND game surprisingly I thought was his best. The offensive errors in that game were not due to him. Pitt had many plays that were right there to make and we had dropped passes, missed throws to open receiver, etc. We'll see how the last 3 games play out. If he continues to improve, no reason to show him the door so quick. If he has a half dozen moments in each of the games where he just clearly wasn't thinking straight, well then it's gonna be tough to say he did even a mediocre job this year.

The lack of identity is a problem.
