Former Pat Comments on Art Rooneys Defensive Scheme

I didn’t like how it seemed like the Steelers defense was unprepared for Lamar Jackson keeping the ball on the read option in the playoff game.

It’s like the outside linebackers were told to ignore Jackson.
This was comical to watch. They were so so bad at this. Memories of Pat White.

Well, it did seem like a creative gameplan -- it was something the Steelers, or any other team, never has seemed to try. Unfortunately it was an utter failure.
The real failure was Henry still gashing the defense on traditional handoffs

And of course Watt’s 3 game streak of zero stats

Why couldn’t “Coach T”, the defensive guru mastermind, figure out how to stop him???
That’s the thing. If people look past their personal bias, and just look at the defensive performance when it counts…being out of every playoff game midway through the first half due to your defense falls on the guru to come up with a game plan, or adjustment to stop the bleeding. 200 yards rushing in a half is unheard of. Baltimore could have run on 30 straight plays if they wanted to…and actually almost did.

I’ve been saying for 3 years, when people were focused on the QB play, that the highest paid defense in the league, the “big nasty D”, is the real problem and should yield a top 5 defense minimum and frankly should be top 3. But instead they were NFL record/historic proportions bad in the playoffs and against teams with a pulse. And this year even teams like Dallas pummeled them.

I am perfectly fine with moving on. In fact I am an advocate if you can get a 1st rd pick for TJ Watts, you move him sooner than later. I think he is on the decline. Like I mentioned before, Dan Rooney had no problem moving on, even future HOFers. Now we seem to be an old folks home.

They are signing him to a new deal. That seems to be the worst kept secret this off-season.

Watt will be here another year or two beyond Rooney and Tomlin. And that’s my prediction…Tomlin will finish out his contract, Rooney will step down, and both will ride off into the sunset together. Rooney’s son will then have to deal with an old and crippled TJ Watt.

Just realized that if the bears were allowed to talk to Tomlin and he were agreeable to a trade, the Steelers would certainly get the #10 overall pick and likely another.

How could anyone defend Tomlin at this point when it’s obvious he’s raking the Steelers over the coals for 15 mil over the next three years and he’s holding steeler nation hostage …

His boss doesn’t agree

And posts here isn’t going to change it .

You're absolutely right on both counts. But that doesn't mean his boss isn't totally wrong on this and a coward, or that we can't call both of them out on their BS.
How are you “calling them out ?”
Buddy - anonymous posts on a pitt football message board aren’t reaching your target audiences!!

What, do you want me to stand outside the Southside facility and chant at the building? Of course this isn't accomplishing anything - the only thing message boards accomplish is providing some entertainment and a place to vent. No one in here would tell you otherwise, you aren't breaking news.

So we agree
You aren’t “calling out “ anyone.
Just mental masturbation

Unless you’re a season ticket holder- it won’t matter
I cut my athletic donation in half and bought cheaper season tickets because I’m unhappy with the direction of our football program .

He’s not

He also isn’t reading this forum
Your sports talk radio shows would love to hear from ya !
Can be the new titleman!
This might be the weirdest take ever from a guy who has posted more takes on this message board than all the other people combined.

Hes completely lacking in self awareness. Despite neither Tomlin or Rooney reading this board he’s twisted himself into a pretzel defending his boy MM. He’s the king of mental masturbation that he accuses others of. Of course as we know quite well projection is what his ilk does better than anyone

It’s all a waste of time for me. As well
I’ve always been very transparent about that

If you think you’re changing anyone’s mind , you’re fooling yourself.

It's the NFL. The rules favor the offense and OCs are probably geniuses at identifying and taking advantange of weaknesses. Put someone out of position and they'll probably find a way to exploit it (which goes to Edelman's point about who is covering the inside receiver in a trips formation).

No offense to Edelman, but I don't really put much weight into what he says in terms of coaching up a defense at the NFL level. How many position group meetings has he sat in at the NFL level? I'd be way more interested in hearing what Patricia had to say about the Steelers defense than Edelman.
If the OCs are geniuses and experts at taking advantage of weaknesses, then perhaps the guy being paid $16 million per year should endeavor to try new ways of stopping them. Doing the same thing over and over and over for nearly 20 years is just going to make things even easier for the geniuses to win.

Crazy idea!

Aren’t we all just wasting time? We aren’t changing the world here.

You gotta admit, 2 #1 picks would be more beneficial for a Steeler rebuild than keeping a coach around who hasn’t been able to nudge this franchise down the right path in a decade.

I doubt that offer would be made , to be honest.
But. It’s moot anyway since art isn’t moving on from Tomlin

Just like he won’t move on from his “popular” players for draft picks

Tomlin would yield a #1 at minimum. And then given he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, he’d bring more. Gruden was traded for 2 #1’s and 2 #2’s.

I do it for half that.

And yeah it’s moot but it’s interesting to know what Fredo is passing up.

For what the bears gave up for Claypool…imagine what they’d give up for Mike T?

Mike T will be here a minimum two more years though. Will be interesting to see what happens when he has one year left on his deal.

Didn't you watch the playoff game against the Ravens? He tried a new way of trying to stop them. It was a disaster. It was so bad it seemed like a joke. I would have rather they just played their normal defense. Would the normal defense have worked? Probably not. But at least it's what the Steelers' players do best. Now of course, their best obviously is not sufficient to compete against the elite.
