Former Pat Comments on Art Rooneys Defensive Scheme

You’ve gotta think about this for a second…… Mike Tomlin wants the defensive coordinator to be the guy who is the first ever coordinator to have a defense give up 500 yards a game three games in a row. A guy who his defense gave up 32 points a game before he got fired in Cincinnati. That is who Mike Tomlin wanted to be the defensive coordinator so that Mike Tomlin can continue to call the defense and he won’t take any heat for how bad it will be. It is so obvious that they need a real defensive coordinator that does the play calling. I am now convinced that the issue is ownership and when your ownership doesn’t have the nerve to do what is necessary to make a change then you’re just stuck until ownership changes or until the controlling owner changes ( see the Pirates Bob Nutting )

Yeah
The promoting from within after hiring a guy as a position coach really needs to stop .

Austin , Canada ,finctner, butler , etc . All Peter principle examples

It’s one thing when you hire a guy like Art smith right into the coordinator role

Thinking about it - it’s the same for the front office . When’s the last time they hired someone from outside ?

I guess Bruce Arians is the exception to the rule under Tomlin
Didn’t Mike Tomlin inherit him along with Dick Lebeau?? And didn’t Dan Rooney make Tomlin hire Todd Haley?? Since these are all commonly talked about. I’m wondering why then they would let Mike Tomlin make some of the hires that he made afterwards.

Adrians was a position coach inherited and promoted under Tomlin.

Yeah art smith fits the Haley mold - success oc who stumbled as a HC.
Honestly - it’s what Lebeau was for Cowher , too .

Seems like the ideal candidate for coordinator to be honest .
Honestly think art smith can be successful- just the talent level on offense wasn’t good enough .

I still think to some extent Arthur Smith is limited in what he can do by Tomlin. Not turning the ball over on offense is the top priority.

Weird
Jayden had a 50% competition rate for 202 yards , 0 TDs and was sacked 3 times .
Tomlin was playing chess while everyone else plays checkers.

He was sandbagging all of his complex and creative stuff for the more seasoned QBs…as the rest of the season, ummm, showed.

but in all seriousness, there are no complexities. There are no exotic looks. There’s nothing. And this is the recipe for 8-10 wins per season because there are always going to be young QBs, injuries, and backups on the schedule.

Sure - the Steelers complexity leaves much to be desired but there have been too many instances in the last 5 years where there are just pure fundamental flaws to the scheme not to mention just a lack of consistent effort in pursuit and tackling.

I don't know how many times I've seen Minkah make business decisions on when and when not to get downhill on a ball carrier. He wouldn't see the field at Alabama with his effort and production the past few seasons.

What’s hurt more during this time is simple execution .
Blown coverages , losing contain , over running gaps , diagnosing blockers .

I don’t think the answer is more complexity.
They fail to do the fundamentals.

Well - unfortunately- he’s been playing way back in coverage to help compensate for our average at best corners

I’m team trade Minkah and watt .
We lose with them - we can certainly lose without them

What makes it worse is they don’t even try to sign or develop key positions in their scheme……Nickel Corner, Nose Tackle ( highest priority on defense ) and they kind of just “hope” guys surprise them. It’s absolutely insane. They haven’t had some of those positions in years. It’s a joke.

I don't. Jesus Christ they were running pitch outs to a slow RB on the short side. That's like 1972. Art Smith coaches the offense the way Mike Tomlin and Art II wants it to......the Seventies! Cause afterall the Stillers dominated dem 70's an' at.

Not exactly. They're a low-seeded playoff team with them. Without Watt they probably win 5-6 games rather than 9-10.
