Officially time to boycott the Pirates

Matt Morris was making over $10 million per season when the Pirates traded for him a decade ago. Remind us all again, how did that one work out?

Just because some or one high paid players didn't pan out doesn't mean that spending money won't help you win. If spending doesn't help, let's just trade all the vets and bring up the Triple A team pay everyone league minimum.

Matt Morris was a washed up high paid player that everyone knew was far from a sure thing.

I'm not saying go get a high paid player to just get one. But they refuse to get into the mix on a trade for anyone that's paid well. When other small smaller teams have a shot they go out and get a CC Sabathia, David Price, etc. level pitcher or a The Pirates go and get a #4-5 starter.

Perfect comparison is the Indians. Look at the moves they made last year near the deadline as well as offseason additions. That's how the Pirates should be approaching things as a team that is only a few additions away from competing for a championship.

So then when you said that the Pirates have never traded for a high paid player you were making a point by posting something that you knew wasn't actually true?

Ok you are right -the Pirates do go after high paid players. I take it you are pleased how they run the organization based on your tone?

Maybe I should've clarified by saying a "quality high paid player". Which they've never done. The Morris move was a desperation move, in a year they weren't even competitive, that was immediately questioned by everyone.

Not particularly, but unlike some people I understand that it's their team to run the way that they think is best. Getting pissed off that the Pirates won't offer someone like Aroldis Chapman $18-20 million per year on a five year contract is kind of dumb, because you ought to know going in that it isn't going to happen.

If you are only going to be happy as a fan if the team spends lots of money on free agents or makes trades for highly paid players then you are a fan of the wrong team. And that's not their fault, it's yours. If you haven't figured out what to expect by now I don't know what to tell you.

Fans should stop coming. I haven't been to PNC Park in 15 years. Of course part of that is that I hate baseball.

Yes, it is THEIR TEAM to run as they see fit, but why bother standing in front of PNC Bank, yelling, "Yay Nuttings' wallet!"

Nutting runs a tease. Keeps the team marginally competitive and hopes to catch lightning in a jar. I think the organization overvalues the "ballpark experience". The North Side Park is not Fenway or Wrigley, nor located in a market the size of Boston or Chicago where ticket demand typically exceeds the supply. Fans are catching on. A bucco game is a great way to spend 3 hours or so, but don't expect too much from the product on the field.
good place for the obese to spend an afternoon feeding their faces

That's all baseball was ever about. It's so dull, you might be on the edge of your seat 5 minutes over 3 hours, most of the time you just drink, eat and bs with your friends.

its a tournament that RMU co-hosts with PPG.....and Pitt does not have a D1 hockey team. Much different.

I wouldn't be shocked if WVU plays a November football game at PNC eventually.
Since you didn't use the sarcasm color, I'll assume you're being serious so you've once again crossed over to the Twilight Zone!

Why in the Wide Wonderful World of Sports would WVU want to abandon their home field where they pack in like 60,000 rabid fans and drive North to play a game in a 38,000 seat venue in front of people who don't give a shit about them?

You've officially jumped the shark!

I think someone, maybe SMF? Suggested Pitt play a game at PNC, so the stadium would look fuller! LOL.

Me too, I was going to games when Clemente and Stargell played together, it was still the same, even if the team is great, the game is still slow and you spend most of you're time eating, drinking and socializing.

I don't expect them to blindly throw money at free agents, but it would be nice to make some effort to put the team over the top when you have a chance to win like they have the past few years. That doesn't mean I'll only be a fan of a team if they spend lots of $. I can be a fan of a team and be unhappy with their management of the team. I don't think I'm in the minority on that feeling.

It's frustrating to see the team make money off good crowds and also continue to receive decent chunks of revenue from MLB revenue sharing. The Pirates are constantly at the bottom of the team payroll vs revenue %. They have the money to make the moves, But refuse to.

I'm pretty sure a dozen Pantherlair posters is not going to convince Nutting to change his mind.

What's hilarious is that SMF posts this, and then the Pirates go and sweep the Cubs. In Wrigley. Another SMF kiss of death to a hairbrained agenda.

If you know what they are going to do and you know that it's going to piss you off when they do it, then like I said, the problem isn't them, it's you. Baseball is entertainment. If your response to the local baseball team is not to be entertained but rather to be upset then you really need to find a different outlet for your entertainment needs.

Well Duquesne doesn't even have a team anymore, so that likely has something to do with it.

Does anyone really think that if Pitt wanted to play a game at PNC that the Pirates wouldn't attempt to accommodate them? Especially considering that Pitt actually HAS played games at PNC before.

I would assume it was likely ended because Pitt and Duquesne were both pretty bad programs at the time, and probably attracted literally dozens of paying fans. Probably everyone involved lost money on the event.

They also held those Pitt/Duquesne game in the middle of weekday afternoons. That didn't help, not that they were ever well publicized by either school.

I agree with that, but that's also the way that Pitt baseball operates. For instance this past weekend they had a series that was supposed to be 6:00 Friday, 3:00 Saturday and 1:00 Sunday. Imagine if someone was thinking about going to the game today and they didn't happen to notice that on Thursday Pitt changed the game from Sunday to Friday afternoon at 2:00? Or what if you were planing on going down on Friday for the 6:00 game and didn't see the change, so when you showed up at 6:00 they were already a couple innings into the second game of a doubleheader you didn't even know was going to happen? Or better yet, what if you showed up at 3:00 on Saturday for the second/third game of the series and when you got there you found out that sometime on Friday they decided to change the start time to 2:00 and so the game is in the 3rd or 4th inning when you get there?

If Pitt wants to actually get people to go to baseball games they need to stop screwing with start times for games. Especially games that are going to be played in the next day or two. It does no good to publicize game dates and game times if you are going to change them at the drop of a hat.

The only way I could see it ... say WVU wants to schedule an OOC series with, say, Kent or Akron. Mac schools supposedly have more leverage now with the 13th game and all, so might get all uppity about wanting a WVU return visit. WVU might say, no, don't wanna do that, but let's play in PNC Park in Pittsburgh where it's more like s home game for WVU fans but Akron (or Kent or whatever) can keep the proceeds or such.

West Virginia vs Penn State
May 10 at PNC Park

This is the final straw.

The Pirates have 81 home games, yet they cant TBA 2-3 September home games and let Pitt have first choice.

Narduzzi wanted to have the Spring Game on April 22 and the Pirates wouldn't accomodate.

The McClatchy group at least had a few Pitt/Duq games at PNC. Having WVU play PSU there is just too much. I am sorry but if you are a Pitt fan, I cant see how you can root for the WV Pirates.
Since your boycott began... Pirates 3-0 with all three wins against the world champions on the road. Any chance you can now boycott all Pitt Athletics?

I won't defend Pitt because I don't know the motivation of these specific moves, but usually these moves are weather related. It's a lot better for Pitt to get the games in with a dozen fans in the seats than stick to the schedule and have 25% of their games canceled.

And to Paco's point about mid-week games, that is when you play OOC games. Pitt plays Duquesne, WVU, and PSU midweek every year. Pitt played both this season at home on Tuesdays and plays both on the road on Thursdays. Maybe it is a shock that the two games in the PSU-WVU series are played on a Tuesday and Wednesday?

Imagine, if everyone followed this thought process, traffic on the BB board would have come to a screeching halt a long time ago, maybe around mid-point of this past season if not earlier.
