Fact - Our new HC is a renown recruiter.

Fact - Our current roster is not loaded with future NBA players. Many have made the case that it is not even full of ACC players.

Fact - There are few top ranked HS kids left to recruit.

So will Capel take marginal kids and hope they develop or does he play the hand he is dealt and to what extent?

I think he will pull a rabbit out of the hat, grab a solid prospect or two and roll with the majority of the roster. Next year he will land at least one big fish.

he'll likely roll with the majority of the roster, take a chance on only 1 or 2 of the higher end players left, and any remaining open spots grad transfers make a ton of sense.

I believe we only have 2 scholarships open next season (barring attrition) so potentially having more open via Grad Transfers is an enormous boost. Typically new coaches recruit extremely well in their first full class, So having a small class really hurts in that regard. Anything to make it bigger will help greatly in the long run

Yeah, I agree that he will be judicial with who he takes for the remainder of this class, not wanting to be committed for four years with too many marginal guys.

Then, look to start to beef up the talent level this summer/fall, for the 2018-19 class.

Well I hope he finds a middle ground in terms of how many on the current roster he invites to return. A handful of guys on this roster don't belong there.

And I think he will. He is saying all the right things in the media about taking everyone back but he has to do what is best for his roster as it directly impacts his performance as the coach.

If he can replace a kid with a better player, he is going to do that just like 100% of the other coaches would.

Hoping you are right....if he does that, I think Pitt can be competitive next year.

Lets hope he can. A strong rebounding grad transfer or JUCO big is the greatest immediate need, IMHO.

what roster? We don't have a roster. All we know is that some dude named Peace and keku didn't ask for their release. that's our roster.

Athletic scholarships are on a year-to-year basis. They have to be renewed every year. Personally, I think 7 players (rising sophomores) in one class is too many. It's fine if you have 7 guys that are freshmen because you typically expect attrition as a natural element of any recruiting class. But can imagine if all of those guys stayed until they were seniors? I think it's likely that 3 of those guys are nowhere near ACC talent. Best case scenario, you now have 10 ACC-caliber players. Odds are, though, that a few others on the team aren't quite up to the ACC standard. If you have 7 players locked up for the next few years, it limits how aggressive you can be with recruiting - and it also means you need a monster class in 2021 to replace those 7 vacancies.

The 2017 Recruiting class should be the most expendable, in my opinion... Luther, JWF, and Ellison may never play in the Tournament with Capel, but they will at least help him get more wins. That should help gain a little bit of an edge in recruiting. Win now with upper classmen & grad transfers = better opportunity for recruiting elite talent in the future. Cut the ties with the marginal players ASAP.

I think he will keep most of the roster and fill what he can with 2 recruits and 1-3 grad transfers, but may have 1-2 spots open, too. I don't think he is going to take way below the line recruits like Stallings did. I expect he can get at least 1 legitimate ACC recruit and 1 marginal 150-200 type like we had with Golden and Dansby. Anything more than that would be icing on the cake.

I'd expect there will be more attrition next year and he will have at least 4 scholarships available. We have talked about it previously and it will be interesting if there are any Duke, or other high level recruits that chose elsewhere, who he would take as transfers but got passed over by the one and done and really, really high level guys at top tier programs.

Boykins was a Grad Senior so he’s gone anyways but I agree. And Ellison will be added as he’s a RS Junior...

Kick those bums out!

OK, with those 7 and Ellison I truly believe Pitt could make the NIT with one other decent freshman that Capel could bring in before November. Having those freshman minutes last year would be big and having a healthy Luther makes a difference.

Who knows. He may actually coach Kene and Brown and Shamiel to stay inside the arc and actually rebound and use their bodies 'nat...Last year's popgun offense was "coaching laziness" at its finest.

Well I hope he finds a middle ground in terms of how many on the current roster he invites to return. A handful of guys on this roster don't belong there.
From the various interviews I have listened to it appears Capel is leaving the door open for anyone who wants to stay. Of course I would imagine he has carefully explained to each one what his role would be and if he even has a role to play here. So it will be interesting how many stay and how many go.

I would be more than happy if that's how it would shake out. I would then bring in at least 2 grad transfers which would set up a 4 man class next year. Fill the other 4 spots with a combination of JUCOs and freshmen.
