Sorry to those bothered by this thread (you didn’t have to click)....but I thought it would get the most eyes in this forum.

anyone know the tv coverage for UEFA Champions League? I see the CBS Sports now has the rights, but neither my cable guide or the CBS Sports website says which game will be broadcast tomorrow at 3pm.

for the biggest sport in the world, it would have been nice if a real sports network like NBC or ESPN got the rights.

Well the reason the your cable guide and the CBS website don't say which games will be broadcast tomorrow is because the answer to you question is that there is no "over the air" broadcast at all. If you want to watch the games in English you have to have the CBS All Access streaming service.

If you are OK with watching the games in Spanish, Galavision and UniMas have games on. I have Galavision, and tomorrow they are scheduled to show Zenit vs Brugge and PSG vs Man U.

Unless they changed their plans, I do not think that CBS has any intention of showing any of the games on either CBS or CBSSN. Maybe later in the tournament. This is there way to try to force people to the streaming service, much like NBC relegating so many Premier League games to Peacock.

I just checked YouTube TV because I have it automatically set to record all Championship League matches and they aired 5 games 2-3 weeks ago on CBSSN. I suppose they are going to air select games on CBSSN and most on their streaming service for the reasons Joe stated.

Was that preliminary round games for the 20-21 Champions League or were those the end of the tournament games from the 19-20 Champions League? Because they did show some of the quarters, semis and finals in August from the completion of last year's tournament after Turner gave up the rights. But did they really show some of the preliminary round games for this year's tournament? That would be games like Qarabag versus Molde and Krasnodor versus PAOK.

That might have been interesting to watch some of those teams from those lower leagues fighting to try to get into the Champions League.

Yes, preliminary round. I agree those games are interesting to watch and I still plan on doing it as I don't even know who won. Reminds me of those mid-major conference championships that I enjoy watching.

Well that's interesting because CBS's original plan was that all the Champions League games were going to be only available on streaming until late in the tournament. They must have changed those plans somewhere along the way, which is at least an improvement.

Maybe they meant the group stage and knockout stage. Who knows. I think I did hear that too but that was pre-pandemic so maybe their advertisers demanded more live content

i went to watch one of the games a couple of months ago (can't remember). CBSSN had a monster truck show on while champions league was pay to play. there literally were no other live sports on tv. so dumb. they're doing what boxing did in the 80's/90's where most people can't watch the sport so how the hell can you grow it?

Spanish Channels. My Euro team is Olympiacos of Greece, I've watched 2 of their games on TUDN so far. It's annoying in Spanish, but I care only about seeing certain teams, and this is the only way unless I pay for some streamimg, and I won't even do that for Pitt football.

Thanks. I saw something carved out in my guide from 3-5pm and assumed it was for a game. But instead it must be some type of studio show then.
This kinda sucks.

I’d argue that what NBCSN has done has helped grow the game tremendously...well at least it’s helped the Premier League. However we all know that there are at least 3 other domestic leagues With good products that could really use the exposure.

very different from NBC and CBS. NBC has open air games. and then NBC has (many/most) of the remaining games on peacock at $5/month. so you get the premier league AND ALL of nbc's content.

CBS you get champions league and almost nothing else of interested for $10/month.

The other thing with what NBC is doing (to be fair to them) is that all these games that they are putting on Peacock are games that you wouldn't have seen on NBCSN in the past anyway. In the past, pre-pandemic, on a typical Saturday there might be multiple games going on at the same time. NBCSN would show one of them, on occasion USA or CNBC would show another, but then any other games in that time slot weren't on anywhere. Last year they started showing those games on NBC Gold (or whatever they called it), but those were games that normally would not have been on television here in the US.

Now, in the post-pandemic world, the Premier League is only having even two game on in the same time slot on very rare occasions. Because no one in England is allowed to attend games yet. They were supposed to start allowing fans earlier this month, but they put that on hold for now. So they are trying to schedule only one game in each television window because if they put multiple games on in a window and you can't attend games in person there would be games that fans of the teams involved would not be able to watch.

Here is a fun fact that a lot of people in the US don't realize. On a typical Saturday morning here, the 10:00 AM game slot (3:00 PM in England), before the pandemic NONE of those games were ever shown on live television in England. Because 3:00 on Saturday afternoon is the standard starting time for games in all levels of soccer in England, and the worry is that if they put a big matchup between two top PL teams on television that it is going to affect attendance all the way down the pyramid of English soccer. So the PL is not allowed to show games in that time slot.

They had to get a special "dispensation" from their charter after the pandemic hit to allow those games to be shown on television in England. Since at first the only other league playing was the Championship and no one was allowed to attend games anywhere they were allowed to show those games on television. They put them on free TV on the BBC, which is something else that is different there. Typical all the games that are on are on a pay channel and none are on "free tv".

I hate the Peacock thing. Last year, I did not miss one Chelsea game. Not one. This year I already missed a game because I wasn’t home and it was on peacock and I couldn’t get the thing on my phone. I’m a Comcast customer so I guess I have free peacock for a while...but to load onto my phone requires a paid subscription as far as as I can tell. Additionally, games from home on Peacock can’t FFwd or rewind or pause. That absolutely sucks.

CBS apparently hasn’t decided which match it is going to air on its Sports Network. It’s now listed on DirecTV as “selected opening round action.”

I am recording both featured matches tomorrow and Wednesday on the Spanish language channels. They are showing Barcelona vs a Turkish team and PSG v Man U tomorrow. Wednesday they have what should be the best match of the opening round in Bayern Munich v Atletico Madrid, plus Man City v Porto.

The CBS Sports Network also is showing two matches later each day on delay. I am hoping that will be taped broadcasts of two other matches instead of a replay of the match they show live.

I hope it’s better this year, but last year the games shown on American TV were pretty much all games involving Premier League teams.

American coverage of UEFA Champions League is horrendous. The Fall I lived in Barcelona, they would broadcast two of the 6:55 pm European time games (from Ukraine, Russia or Turkey, where they play earlier) followed by 3 or 4 of the 9 pm matches. It required having Sky TV as well as the Spanish, German and Italian sports channels, but most short-term apartments there have them. If not, every Irish pub in Europe shows every match live — and there were 4 Irish pubs within walking distance of our apartment.

That is one thing that everyone seems to agree on. And I really can't figure it out. Turner had the contract (that they just abandoned in the middle of the year last year) and while they did show some Champions League games they obviously own several channels and could have shown a lot more than what they did. And of course they didn't show any Europa League games at all over the air on any of their networks all the way up to the final.

I just don't understand why someone would bid on the rights and pay the money for them and then not try to maximize coverage to maximize revenues. I mean I guess that CBS thinks that they are going to drive lots of people All Access, but instead what they are going to do is have a lot of people like me who just don't watch the games.

Ok. This takes me back to my original question. My cable channel guide made me think that there was a game from 3-5(eastern) but it just wasn’t specifying which one. Now I went back to the guide Today and it is updated and says “the Golazo show”, which is described as a whip around program featuring every goal from every one of the six matches being played. So it appears no free over the air games. Then at 9pm (eastern) it says “UEFA Champions League”, and says “replay”, and “coverage of matches played”.
Wednesday at 3pm is showing “the Golazo show” again.

Here's a great article from the SMF on TV Soccer Rights

You have 2 choices:

- pay $6/month for CBS All Access or $60/year

- watch them on Spanish language channels UniMas, Galavision, or TUDN. YouTube TV doesn't have these but most cable companies offer them for free and you don't even know it. I watched many games available only on these stations and honestly, its pretty enjoyable. I think you'd be surprised. Makes you really pay attention to the game more and the Mexican announcers get excited over every little thing. I think you'll like it.

I’ve watched games on Spanish channels but they are not high def on my tv. But it’s better than nothing.

I just signed up for the CBS all access. I have 7 days free and then I’ll likely cancel. There is nothing in that subscription that I’m slightly interested in. The best 5.99 I pay for is espn+. I subscribed to watch my daughter play her college games, and now my younger daughter will be starting her collegiate career as well. But through that app, you get countless college content, and the English Championship too.

I just watched the last half hour of the Man U - PSG game on one of the Spanish language channels. As SMF notes, when Rashford scored the game winner the Spanish speaking announcer went bonkers.

For the US fans, Gio Reyna had the assist on Dortmund's goal in their loss, and Ethan Horvath was the goalie for Brugge in their win over Zenit.

I mean they're known for that when they score but even during the build-up or a close miss, they go nuts. Its fun.

I haven't heard the name Ethan Horvath in ages.

Reyna, McKennie, Pulisic, Adams. Easily the best young midfielders in US history. Disappointed Josh Sargent didnt isn't having the sams success. Still need that #9
