OT: Josh Bell traded to the Nats

Yeah the buccos have a history of selling low. Better option is to let Bell start out, the. Trade him before the August/September deadline... oh well.

Hopefully this return turns out great. Certainly isn’t as disastrous as the Cole or Archer deals

Honestly that's a much better return than I would have expected Bell to net on the market. Crowe will slot into the opening day rotation and Yean is a very high variance upside arm.
I agree — it’s a good return. The risk of keeping Bell and then trying to trade him is of course if 2020 wasn’t an aberration— he might have very little trade value if he has another horrid start.

Yeah, it's definitely a bit of selling low on him but you're right, he's worth less than nothing if he starts out cold next year and he's been cold since June of 2019. A high floor pitcher and a high ceiling pitcher for him is just fine.

So what I just read is piece #1 Crowe projects as a #5 man in the rotation or a reliever. His debut with the Nats in 2020 0-3 with an 11+ ERA. 2019 between AA and AAA he was 7-10 with a 4.70 ERA. But he he can strike out a lot of minor leaguers. Oh yeah...he is 26 years old.
And some 20 year old kid from the Dom Rep.

this asshole Nutting loves making it difficult to be a loyal Pirates fan

Yeah, we should definitely judge a guy based on three late season appearances after he hadn't pitched in a live game for 12 months.

Crowe isn't an elite prospect but he's solid enough to be the A side of a return for Bell. His fastball isn't a strength but it sits 92 and has a good spin rate, personally I think that he needs to go the Richard Rodriguez route and throw it higher in the zone but it's good enough to play. His secondary offerings are all very good as well and he has good command, he's very polished and doesn't do anything poorly. In 2018 in High A he was 11-0 with a 2.69 ERA and 8.1 K/9 and in 2019 he was 7-6 with a 3.87 ERA and 8.4 K/9 so he has done very well at his age appropriate levels, getting bombed in the PCL in 2019 really doesn't count. (seriously, look that stuff up, it was absolutely wild)

Eddy Yean I absolutely love, he's a 3/4 armslot with a 4 seamer that sits in the mid 90s and now a two seamer that he found in the middle of 2019 that sits 93ish that has a ton of armside ride. He's a crazy high spin guy who probably will need TJ at some point but has a ton of upside.

A mid-90's fastball these days is like putting the ball on a tee. I'm not ready to deem that a huge asset unless there's a lot of movement to it.

I'm completely fine with moving Bell. He was never going to be part of any future success with a team this far away from being formidable. The only question was whether or not they were going to gamble on him having a solid half-season and try to fetch more in return. A lot to be determined. But let's please not act like this is the same thing as it would have been if the '91 Pirates traded Bonds or something. These team is years away from mattering, and Josh Bell isn't some great player we should have fought tooth and nail to keep.

I think this is a pretty "wait and see" trade if ever there was one.

Bell definitely hasn't lived up to the hype minus his 2 months in 2019 BUT, a 26 year old pitcher who might be a 5th starter? Another who went 0-3 with an 11.88 era in the majors last year? Hell Neverauskas had better numbers than that. This organization is a friggin joke I mean when they can't get any lower, when Nutting keeps dumping payroll to look like it did in 1985 put comes another awful trade and salary dump. This organization deserves to lose 100 games every year for years to come. Pathetic.

I may never go to another Pirates game. This is just another disgrace. Just sell the franchise and move it to ownership and a town that cares.

Bell was the signing that led to the changing of all of the MLB draft/international rules. It would have been nice to see him become a great player as a Pirate, but at least he made it, had a good year or two and seemed like a great guy throughout. Hopefully, he bursts out like some others have done after leaving Pittsburgh.

The problem with that is that if he hits like he did last year, or the second half of the year before, then he becomes essentially untradeable.

I mean seriously, we are talking about a guy with essentially three really good months in his career. Which might be pretty good if his major league career so far had lasted four and half months instead of the four and a half years it has actually been going on.

If we are talking stats. Bell, over his entire 5 year career, was worth 2.5 WAR...total...not per year. He was barely above replacement level. If not for a good first half of 2019, everyone would be calling this guy a bum, or a bust. But he wasnt that good in 17 and 18, and has been awful since the 2019 All Star Break.

The 26 year old, and the 0-3 11.88 ERA guy are the same guy. Backend arm with some pitchability and upside. The young guy is the main pickup. 19 year old who hits 97 and has a solid breaking ball and changeup. A ways away, but the only way to end up with impact arm in the majors if you are a small market, is to load up on lottery tickets and hope a few pan out.

Should’ve traded Polonco but probably would’ve gotten a couple of lottery tickets ( not picks) for him!

The other thing I find interesting about this trade (and the timing) is that the DH likely isn’t coming to the National League in 2021. If so, I think they hold onto him and try to boost his value a bit.

I get that it’s fashionable to rag on the Pirates and much of it deserved. But how else will they attempt at fielding a competitive team if not for stocking up on prospects and hoping they pan out.

What would you armchair GMs do?

What's the point of being a Pirate fan ?
Anybody worth anything they trade .
Its pointless to follow them and that goof owner from West Virginia.
Exactly. The Pirates were not a good hitting team last year at all. What do they do to try and improve for this year...trade away one of their best offensive threats. Makes no sense at all.
Should have kept Bell, added a player or two like Kyle Schwarber and see what happens.
Hopefully governor wolf will prevent professional baseball from being played in 2021.

I dont know man. I’m not sure you can say there is such a thing as selling low on Josh Bell. His career is split into two phases: Medicore and a 50 game stretch when he was mike trout.

Only Pirate fans would they say that a guy whose major league experience consists of giving up 11 earned runs in 8-plus innings slots into the opening day rotation.

The reality is that they made a trade with a team that has emptied itself of high value prospects over the last five years to try to win now (which they did two years back) and has dreck in its farm system.
