Got into a debate with my buddies last night. Who here feels that Daniel Larusso should have to give back the his All Valley Tournament title for an illegal kick to the face? I say it was illegal while others say it was a clean kick. Curious to see what other sports fans think

Match should have been stopped long before the "illegal" kick.

How was the kick illegal? In the tournament montage Johnny kicks someone in the face and is awarded a point, same with Dutch in the quarterfinal against Daniel. That the Crane Kick was somehow illegal is from that "Daniel was the real bad guy" video, that while funny has tons of flaws and reaches, also Johnny used it as an excuse for losing in Cobra Kai.

You bring up some interesting points. I have seen the video and I do think Daniel had some anger issues with moving to LA.

I'm not sure how these events were actually judged in the early 80's; however, my daughter is a second degree in Kenpo and participates in these tournaments. First, you're not allowed to kick an opponent in the face, at least in that age group. Second, if you did it today, you would break your foot because everybody has headgear similar to a catcher's mask.

Ummmm. This was the All Valley tournament...not some 2nd rate Kenpo that you described

The Crane kick is the most telegraphable kick imaginable. I don’t see how Johnny fell for it. There is good reason why he is drinking his life away in cobra Kai. He blew it.

I could hit anyone using that stance.

Miagi was wrong, when Daniel tried it on that dude in KK2 the guy just grabbed his leg and tossed him like a rag doll.

That is because miagi came from Okinawa...where the crane kick originated. Miagi lied to Daniel San...he played it off like he originated the kick whereas the truth is he plagiarized it from his homeland. That is why it didn't work for Daniel in the 2nd movie

Yes, little prick should have been disqualified. At least in my eyes, it doesn’t tarnish the legacy of the GOAT, Johnny Lawrence.

Here is the other thing that gets me about Miyagi. I dont think I am out of line in suggesting he appears to be grooming Laruso. No one else finds it strange that he doesn't train anyone else? He only takes a shine to Daniel.

Now my other take on Miyagi is more conspiratorial. If he wasn't grooming Daniel for some sick twisted fetish, perhaps he saw him as a way to launder money. Again, this is a tin foil hat look, but explain to me how Daniel can move from poverty to extreme wealth by getting into the automobile dealership industry? That seems like a stretch. Where does he secure his capital from? Miyagi. I dont think the movie's and Cobra Kai's writers were trying to tell a story of upward mobility....I think the underlying unspoken is pure mob and criminal family behavior.

Call me cynical, but I think if you look hard enough you will see it too.

It blows my mind that I am now as old as Mr. Miyagi was in Karate Kid.

I always thought Miyagi was just grooming him to be a car detailer or Miyagi was just too lazy to wash and wax his cars himself. Your conspiracy theory sheds possible new light...

I think that Peyton List is pretty attractive in the reboot.
There are like 3 actresses named Peyton List. All pretty attractive. Scroll down.

It's fiction, the "hero" as annoying as Daniel may be, has to beat the bad guys against all odds, it's a movie, not a real competition.

Just waiting to see if Laruso turns up in the next season of Ozark.
