Judge in California ruled that the NCAA's Show Cause requirement for schools looking to hire offending coaches violates California Law prohibiting the restriction of worker mobility.

This will obviously be appealed, but definitely has implications on the future of college sports and the rights of the players.

Not surprised. I think it's the right ruling. Various no-poach and non-compete clauses have also fallen in some recent court decisions or to worker mobility laws. There is one proposed at the federal level too, which could probably pass under another administration. Maybe even this one?

At some point the NCAA will either need a carve out from congress or to just act like a normal employer.

Pretty big news. Thanks for posting. Any article to link?

If the NCAA loses the appeals, it will be interesting to see how they adapt their penalties. They could easily just decide to attach penalties to coaches without review if they are signed by a new school, but would the schools sign off on that? I'm not sure.

They're already threatening that the PAC-12 teams would just have to LEAVE THE NCAA.

Yeah right, that will happen.

excuse my ignorance, but what is an "offending coach"

A coach that has or is breaking NCAA regulations. A coach that has received punishment from the NCAA for their actions. A school must show cause as to why those sanctions/punishments shouldn’t be carried over to their program if they hire that coach.
