I'm a Dallas Mavericks fan, and this is by far the most caught off guard, and slighted I've felt by a team that I support, and I'm a Pirates fan. At least as a Pirates fan I know to an extent that there is some logic in why they can't spend x amount of money, but having a team that I follow and have heavily supported for over two decades do something this careless, and without any recognition of how it'll effect the fan base just has left me with a super uncomfortable feeling.
This would be like the Bengals after Burrow took them to the Super bowl trading him to the Raiders for Maxx Crosby and a first, or the Penguins trading Sidney Crosby after they lost to the Red Wings in 2008. Like this type of thing is completely unprecedented, and unheard of, and for the return that they got is inexplicable.
It gives me an appreciation for college athletics as sure things are constantly changing, but I can always see reason and logic behind moves that are made by players, and the teams you follow can't just up and say you know this cornerstone, the most talented player to ever put our uniform on, well we don't want him anymore.
