OT: Maryland HS Championships

10 years ago my kid played in a youth football league championship here in Maryland

December Saturday and each of the youth divisions had their final (iirc 6 age divisions) in Ravens M&T Bank stadium

obviously the kids loved playing there but lost missing 3XP kick attempts on the narrower professional goalposts :( , one of our players still plays for Duke and others went D-1 in FB and other sports

appeared to have a few thousand fans coming and going though the game times

Perfect. That's what I said. Raise prices. Parents will pay $50 more for their kid to play in a real stadium. Its mostly all the rich schools and private schools who make it anyway.
said Aliquippa never...I might change my mind if I can get the blaring rap music between every play and the 6 million decibel "3rd Down !!! " knucklehead screaming all the time that makes the games at these venues so enjoyable.....

If there even are concessions. Penn State hosts some district six championships in other sports. There are no open concession stands.
Well, I know the fine folks at Hershey Corp never passed up on charging $5 for a soda and $7 for a hamburger several years ago...Now the nice booster club ladies at CV, uh not so much..

Ohio State and Duke sunk their field to put in seating overtop of where the old track used to be. The site lines are terrible in track stadiums. It makes it really hard to watch a HS football game in person. You literally sit farther from the field at a HS game than at an NFL game. Makes no sense. No new HS stadium should be built with a track. Put the track around some elementary or MS field. Playing a state championship in a HS track stadium is just stupid. Why do you think PA is the only one that does it?
Why? I laid out the only four bids...that is why...

utterly impossible to get a decent look at the playing surface....horrible.....hahahaha

once again....less stands to sideline distance than hershypark stadium which you have no issue with...

Now we're worried about a track around a football field... I wonder why IOC doesn't change the soccer venues for the Olympics.. I'm assuming the stands are empty when they have a track around the field - no? Site lines probably kill the emotion and excitement of the game.

Stop talking about bids. I dont care about bids. They put the bids out because they are poor and looking for the lowest bidder.
Ask the Steelers, Eagles, Bucknell, St. Francis, IUP, Lehigh, Lafayette, Shippensburg, Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, and Penn how much it costs to rent their facility. The last thing you do is play it at a high school.

Most of those "stadiums" are on par or worse than high school ones, plus to a high school kid playing at Shippensburg is no different than playing at a high school, they want to play in the stadiums they see on tv, none of them have ever seen IUP's field on tv.

Let me rephrase...

Stop talking about reality. I don't care about reality. They only put those out because that's the easiest way to do business and make a sensible decision. They should go and beg at facilities that don't want to bother with this or have zero value above the kind of HS field they've always used that makes a lot of sense logistically and financially. The last thing you do is worry about reality!

Do you really want your state championships to be played in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania? Or Lewisburg, Pennsylvania? Or Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania?

As opposed a HS in Carlisle? Absolutely!

Again, I have scoreboard. PA is the only state to do this. And its not because the PIAA is smarter than all the other states.

A family of 4 going to Ford Field to watch their high school team play shells out $88 ($20 per ticket and $8 to park) even before paying what I am sure is NFL stadium priced concessions.. Looking at $125-$150 for the day not even taking in travel expense to a non central location..Seems counterintuitive to what constitutes high school athletics..
$10 tickets for the WPIAL Championships. $15 ALCO parking, though you could find cheaper lots

Track stadiums are bad enough, but the ones that have the sidewalk in front of the bleachers makes for the worst site lines.

There’s a game on now. Pretty much the same as Mansion Park with a bigger visitor section. Basically a big HS football stadium. And (GASP), there’s a track!

I didn't say small college stadiums are any nicer than the better HS ones. Its just pathetic to have a state championship on a HS field with that random HS team's logo. So small time. Like we are Maine or Vermont. At least WV plays on a college field.

All of the schools with turf fields in the Detroit area have logos and done up end zones, the fancier the school the more elaborate the field is.

I just Google mapped the stadium in Charleston, looks like dump that smells like urine.

Defending a crappy college field that is the size of a high school field saying it is better than a high school field isn’t the flex you think it is.

hmmn, none in HC, none I've seen in AA

you sure about Easton?

yup.

C. Milton Wright has a huge "W" on their new turf. I don't know about schools like Aberdeen and such..

They paint a huge orange/black arrowhead at the 50 yard line at Easton.

Oakdale, Damascus, Linganore, etc do too..

At the absolute bare minimum, they should be played at a crappy college stadium. I wouldn't recommend that but that's the cheapest route you should go. The University of Charleston vs Cumberland Valley HS is a pretty pathetic debate to have because its a fairly wealthy state vs Haiti. PA can do better. Doesn't need to go super cheap.

hmmn, HoCo all turf, no grass, AACo maybe also

are all those grass? maybe that's why in part
All of them are turf except Damascus and Easton.

On the eastern shore, Wicomico stadium usually is never painted because WIHI/Bennett/Parkside all share the field even though Bennett has their own stadium. That is the nicest grass field, I've been on for HS football. All Bermuda grass that is manicured better then most fairways.

In terms of the shore everyone had grass up until 2016. Snow Hill was the 1st to switch over.

Such a dumb argument.

I was giving the PIAA the benefit of the doubt...until they moved the Wrestling Duals Championship from the Giant Center in Hershey (which is a fine facility) to.....ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL!!!

I understand the Duals doesn't bring the crowd like the individual tournament does, but really a basic HS gym? If it was like Bethel Park or Peters Twp HS gyms, I could understand as they are better then many non power 4 D1 schools gyms. Altoona's Gym is not that type of gym, but a basic HS gym.

Cheap, cheap, cheap. The argument from the Cumberland Valley fans will be if the duals dont draw a crowd larger than what a HS venue can hold, why rent a minor league hockey arena? And from a financial standpoint, they are correct. But when you reach a state championship in anything, the venue should be something more than a high school venue.

I agree with you, but i could get behind it being at a HS gym if it was Bethel Park or Peters. Those gyms are arenas, that are nicer than PSAC, Robert Morris, Bucknell, the old Duquesne Palumbo (not sure what new place looks like). But. Altoona's gym is a b adic HS gym that is hard to get to from all directions. If they were going this route, they would of been better off at Cumberland Valley so it's right off 76. Altoona from all directions forces travelers to use lesser maintained highways in February in the mountains.

It's a damn shame it's not at the Giant Center, but they couldn't have picked a worse location. And I'm sure money is a driving force.

And yet, everyone cried that Altoona lost the football championships because it was so centrally located.

BP and Peters and Montour are lower D1 caliber gyms and certainly better than a lot of D2 and D3 ones. Actually, Cumberland Valley's gym is similar to those so may as well do it there like you said. For me though, its not the quality of the bleachers, or the locker rooms, or the parking availability. The kids deserve to compete at a college venue or at least some facility that isnt at a high school. BP, Peters, Montour, Cumberland Valley are fine facilities on the surface for wrestling but they are still high schools. Why not IUP? It is somewhat in the middle of the state and is better than most mid-major D1 arenas. The reason is cost. The PIAA is a broke-ass organization.

If Cumberland Valley has a gym like that, it's a damn shame they are going to Altoona. Personally, I agree with you it should be at the Giant Center still, but not a basic HS gym.

For football, I wish Hershey would put money back into the stadium and get the Championships back there too. But no one seems to want to go through that effort. It's not my place to tell them what to do.

Hersheypark Stadium gets semi-major concerts. If its good enough for a mega star like Morgan Wallen, its good enough for the PIAA. They dont need to put any money in it. Its perfect for HS football.

And yea, Cumberland Valley's gym is right up there with BP, Peters, Montour as one of the best in the state. Not sure what Altoona looks like but if its your basic HS gym, its ashame that's where they are holding the championships.
