OT: Mason Rudolph Update...

And he had to be “assisted” from the field (i. e. walked-off with help) because the cart that is usually used for this purpose was broken. This, according to published reports.....

Maybe the Steelers should run another 50/50 drawing to buy a new cart?

Wouldn’t be shocking if it’s because the Rooneys were arguing it was up to the city to pay for the repairs or a new cart

The silver lining is that he was apparently knocked unconscious. Post-concussion issues tend to be worse when not knocked unconcscious.

Could have been worse for sure.

A serious question: is this the same cart that Pitt would need in the event of an injury? Or does Pitt football have its own cart at Heinz Field?
Pitt has it's own cart.

That's Narduzzi driving, but Pitt Poker swears Nardawg is pulling it!

Interesting. Never heard that before. And I’m not saying I don’t believe it. Actually might google that as it is truly interesting if true.

They could learn some lessons from Bob Nutting

;)

This was from 2015, which was around the time I heard Mickey Collins speak about it. Since that time more research has shown a protective effect of losing consciousness. Mickey Collins is the world’s concussion guru and at UPMC. Great guy. Nobody knows more about the topic than him.

Thanks. Anything published since then that you’re aware of (even theories or educated guesses) as to why that is?

I am not sure there is ever a “better” concussion, but I am sure that this is the specific kind of vicious and unnecessary crap the NFL needs to put a stop to right now. The proof is on the video.

Not only had Mason already thrown the ball but there is absolutely no reason the player should be raising up at the QBs chin and helmet unless he is purposely trying to hit a defenseless player. There is simply no good answer for what he did or how he did it.

The theory is that the unconscious state is protective mechanism for the brain. The brain is very susceptible to inflammation generated from trauma and that inflammation is potentiated by increased neural activity of the conscious state. I haven’t followed Mickey Collins literature recently but that work could go a long way to developing post-concussion treatments.

I don't think it's a new idea or anything. My best friend is a boxer, and I remember him telling me that "getting knocked out is healthier" years ago. Although maybe this guy has taken it to a new level or something; I don't know.

Has the NFL made a statement yet about the hit? From what I saw Rudolph was off the ground a bit when throwing. That tells me the defender had to launch upwards to catch Rudolph that high up.

Ironic that later a guy on the Ravens suffered some sort of leg or ankle injury and a different cart was there to get him off the field. Not sure why they couldn’t delay the game a little longer until they got that backup cart out there to drive Rudolph to the locker room.

They preach about player safety yet a concussed player that was unconscious was forced to be carried off the field by teammates. Another thing I found odd, they obviously left his helmet on just removing the face mask, right before he got into the locker room though somehow his entire helmet had been removed. Nothing about how Rudolph was escorted off the field and into the locker room seemed very safe IMO.

My son works closely with Mickey Collins and treats athletes in Pittsburgh with concussions. He does their assessments and prescribes treatment. I'll ask him about this.

Dr. Collins' group did wonders for me and I will always recommend them to anyone who asks. The study in question wasn't conclusive. Only noted that there may be some correlation. I don't know that he'd own that result as much as he would tell you that every brain injury is different and that's why recovery times and responses to injury differ. That's really the heart of the problem. There isn't any kind of "if/then" algorithm. At least not yet.

Rudolph's injury freaks me out. Being unconscious might "be better" but it's a horrific feeling when you come around. I don't wish it on anyone.

Bottom line is... at minimum he should have been back boarded.
Anytime there is a possible head or neck injury you backboard the patient.
Even if you have to get 4 people and carry him off the field on the board. You have the head and neck stabilized.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing....

At least he walked off. Could have been worse.

That middle one is a hoot. Reminds me of a guy I worked with. Back in the 60s he broke his ankle at work [long before I was hired]. They took him to the local hospital and as they were wheeling him down the hall in the wheel chair a wheel broke off, dumping him out of the chair. He was hopping down the hall way screaming "get me to a real hospital".
