Inspired by concert thread, I wanted to make something for us to spew forth our best Skip Bayless style music hot takes.

So I'll start.

My Mount Rushmore of terrible, no good, very overrated rock legends is as follows:

The Beatles
Clapton
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen.

So what are your music hot takes?

I'll take two of yours...the Beatles & Dylan. Replace the others with Nirvana and Pink Floyd.

Well that's funny, because on one hand, I can justify them being on Rushmore's of greatness, but when it comes down to it, I really am not a big fan of any of them. I give the Beatles props based on the individual talents and sheer volume, but man I am far from a Beatles fan. Springsteen? I have seen him live, legendary and you know all the songs, but he is maybe a more folksy Bon Jovi. I mean don't get me wrong, very appealing and popular. Clapton I think you can't discount his bluesish stuff, early stuff. But yeah, as a solo artist? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Dylan? Great songwriter that captured the times, but to be honest his best work is when it is song by someone else because musically he is horrible.

Me? Mt. Rushmore of Overrated?
Beatles (I just was always more of a Stones, Who, Zeppelin fan of bands from that era)
Green Day (How are they in the Rock Hall of Fame?)
ZZ Top. (I just friggin hate.)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (yeah, I went there)
HM Van Halen (Yeah I went there too)

You had me all the way up to Stevie Ray=overrated.

The dude will live forever.

cant believe my REM post was deleted. REM is terrible and belongs on this list as does KISS, I don't care who I offend, you will not silence me..

or maybe my comment about "every 15-16 year old boy liking Led Zeppelin in high school and getting to college and realizing they kind of suck" comment struck a chord. if so, well meh

The Beatles have to be overrated, no band could be as good as they are made out to be. Something like six of the top 10 albums of all time on some lists? That's ridiculous.

I actually like the more recent Dylan than the early folk Dylan (except the silly Sinatra imitator stuff).

Underrated: The Faces, Little Feat, Boz Scaggs.

always kind of amazed at the Beatles disdain..when you are the greatest ever, there is no way possible to not to be underrated so I guess you tend to show up on these kinds of list...

Agree with Dylan and Springsteen...Clapton, no way. ..

I wonder if such legends like Morrison aren't over hyped due to his early and untimely death. lots of people who die early, entertainers, athletes, musicians, tend to be remembered much more fondly than they should. you remember the good, forget about the bad or maybe they haven't yet had their "bad." I'd be curious if that is what happened with Morrison.

The greatest ever? Hell no. There's no denying the cultural impact of the Beatles, but in terms of the actual quality of their music? Profoundly pedestrian.

Music is personal preference, so I'm sure many won't agree with what I think.

My overrated list includes (never cared much for their music):
- Pink Floyd
- Rolling Stones
- Bruce Springsteen
- Grateful Dead

My underrated list includes:
- Rush
- Rage Against the Machine
- The Kinks
- Black Sabbath

The last 3 were huge innovators, and don't get enough credit for what they did.

that's ok, I am a pedestrian. I think songs that I like and can sing to and have solid joyful lyrics are quality. Give me Chicago, Give me some Billy Joel. Give me some Doobie Brothers. Give me some Elton John. What is your "quality" yardstick? I'll take a stab at it that it comes back as some boring depressing stuff

1) Beatles
2) Beatles
they are so overrated they need to be listed twice. My theory is that once a band breaks up or a key member dies, they are instantly even that much better than they were/are. This group had both. Not that they are bad because they are/were not but way over hyped. I would rather listen to Dave Clark 5 than the Beatles if i was in a 60's music trip.

3) Madonna- There are maybe 2 of her songs I can tolerate. She is classic 80's image over substance.
4) Jimmy Hendrix- Sorry I never saw the appeal. Again see the point I made about someone dying and instantly being bigger than they were.

HM-
Nirvana- I like a lot of their songs but as I mentioned Coban commits suicide and then they become more famous than they already were.
2Pac- the theme continues
Biggie Smalls- and continues. Way better rappers that don't have half the hype of these 2.

I would agree with the person who wrote Green Day but I don't think anyone thinks of them among the legends.

My theory is that when you sell the most records in the history of planet earth when only being a band for a decade, you cannot be "overhyped".

I like the Beatles and do feel they were great, but my opinion like the OP said for us to list our own opinion, I feel they overrated/over hyped. If you don't feel that way, cool that is your opinion and does not need to be shared by me. As for your comments about selling the most, Star Wars sells a ton of merchandise and tickets more than most other movies/franchises yet i feel there are many better movies than Star Wars. Same thing here. It is all personal opinion.

I never cared for the Beatles either. Obviously millions and millions and millions of people disagree with me.

I mentioned Green Day just because somehow they were elected to the RnR HOF on their first ballot. Green Day? I mean really, Green Day? I don't even dislike them, but just never thought of them as:
a) that popular
b) that influential
c) that musically talented

Well.........one thing we may learn is that alot of art/entertainment has an "Emperor's New Clothes" type of phenomenon associated with it. Meaning because something becomes popular or hot, people feel compelled to "like" because most are joiners and want to be part of the group and not be seen as a non conformer so they all become fans and think it is good. The exact opposite happens to, when something becomes popular so a certain group automatically hates it and assumes it is a sellout.

Stone Temple Pilots by far for me. And really all of that Seattle stuff. Nothing screams yinzer more than a guy cruising through South Park with the windows down blasting Black Hole Sun or Vaseline. That is, unless he’s blasting Renegade by Styx.

Of course, music is all about taste, but the grunge stuff is more about people thinking it’s cool (it’s not) instead of it being good.

And one other thing, why is it that Rush fans want to fight whenever someone says they suck? Someone negatively mentioned two of my favorites earlier in this thread, and I could care less.

Leary said it best
“I’m drunk I’m nobody, I’m drunk I’m famous, I’m drunk I’m fat, I’m drunk I’m effin dead “
The Jim Morrison life story.

The doors have some decent songs , but that’s about it.

Led Zeppelin is a very good cover band.

Green Day’s best albums were on Lookout.
But their American idiot album was good.

I’ll add Red Hot Chili Peppers into the way overrated department.
Jane’s Addicion were miles better

I like the chili peppers, they actually had a nice little funk side in mid 80s under George Clinton.

Maybe it is because I lived through it, but imho it is impossible to overrate the Beatles. They changed everything, and inspired thousands of kids to pick up instruments and start bands in a way that had never been seen before. They dominated their all-too brief time period, and in fact remained on the cutting edge of relevance throughout it and far beyond.

Recruits - I have to agree with all of this.

KISS, I don't care who I offend, you will not silence me..

I used to hate KISS, then I listened to them within the last 5 years, got their Greatest Hits CD for $5 from Walmart, yeah, they suck, stupid lyrics, remedial music ability, but actually they're so bad they are good, just some fun crappy mid '70s nostalgia.

Myself, I think Led Zeppelin and The Stones are overrated, they're OK, but both actually tend to annoy me to some degree. Of course from that era, I'm a big fan of The Who, and it irritates me that their genius music is rated below those others, when it's so far superior. :)

It's all a matter of musical taste, because there are a lot of bands that sold millions + of albums that I think (thought at the time) are meh.

-Stones - Some good stuff, but overall very overrated.
-Springsteen
-Rush (I don't know too many who are middle of the road for this group - people seem to either think they are the bestest ever, or can't stand them. I'm in the second camp.
-Beatles
-Kiss
-Doors - I saw clips of Doors concerts where Jim Morrison went on some of his "confrontational" rants, and told the audience they were stupid, etc. I don't think I could have put up with that. Especially since I don't care for their music.
-Pink Floyd was another to me who produced some okay stuff, and a lot of meh.
-Cheap Trick
I'm sure there are lots more, but that should be plenty enough to fill any Mount Rushmore.

The Who sucks and Keith Moon is garbage.

It's all just opinion. LZ is a bunch of pompous BS to be totally honest, it sounds OK at first, but just to boring over time. The really old Stones from the earlly '60s was kind of good, the rest iskind of R&B drivel, nothing stands out as very great past their original greatest hits.

Here’s why the Beatles aren’t overrated

7 years... 7 they came into the worlds consciousness in like 63 by 70 they called it a day... in that amount of time they evolved into an entirely different animal...it’s indisputable

No one did that then

Rush is one of the all time greats who earned every bit of credit and adulation through plain ole hard work and no music biz bullshit... one of the greats period... deal

Michael Jackson is entirely overrated to an unbelievable extreme... even Quincy Jones recently talked about how much he just plain stole without ever giving credit... QJ chalked it up to pure greed

KISS can’t be overrated ... no one ever gave them credit in the first place...but they were fun as hell from about 75-78....

Today you have to dig to find good quality music... the industry has killed itself... instead of Jimi Hendrix producing his own material in a DIY fashion you get 30-40 “ producers “ just trying to take credit for the latest POS Beyoncé album...

Overrated? I’ll go with Bruno Mars... had talent that his “music “ never reflects... fallen prey to sampling hell like so many others as well... for crissakes WRITE something don’t sample repeat and call it a “song”

1967 albums:
The Velvet Underground & Nico (ST) > Small Faces (ST) > Introducing the Sonics > Something Else by the Kinks > Their Satanic Majesties Request > Disraeli Gears > The Who Sell Out > Magical Mystery Tour > Sgt. Pepper > The Doors (ST)

Everything The Doors did except that Brecht Whiskey Bar song are unbearable to me. It sounds like awful circus music. Ray whats-his-face also basically ruined several X songs as well.

Also:
  • The whole dad "blues rock" genre is entirely garbage and I cannot be convinced otherwise.
  • "Poptimism" is just a faux-woke shield to stop criticism of vapid music.
  • "The Village Green Preservation Society" and "Victoria" are two singles that make me consider becoming a goddamn Tory.
  • Late 90s/early 2000s country that is popular among sorority sisters going to Nashville for bachelorette parties is actually good.

Oh yeah I have more
  • Destiny's Child was better than Beyonce and Beyonce is mostly boring.
  • Grime is just better than American hip hop now.
  • Janis Joplin was boring, possibly even worse than The Doors
  • Soundgarden was better than Radiohead
  • I can't stand anything by The Eagles except Tusk

See, that's why I like this type of thread. Tusk is one of the very few Eagles songs I think is horrible.

It's all a matter of personal taste.
