OT: Music Hot Take Thread

Steve did the right thing when he changed the Fight Song. Pitt fans who don’t know any of the words but chant about PSU during a Pitt - Syracuse game are an embarrassment.

oh boy, one of those guys...personally I always thought it unique and cool..to each his own...da da da da da da Penn State Sucks. da da da da da da Penn State Sucks. P E N N S T sucks!

btw..Not one Pitt fan is anymore knowledgeable of the lyrics to the song now than they were before they ruined it. Just ruined a lot of fun for the kids to kiss some tail midstate wise.

Sounds more like an indictment of our lackluster fan base than our former admin. The song is a metaphor for the jabronis in our ranks that care more about giving PSU the finger and seeing them fail than lifting a finger to help Pitt succeed.

we can have both...changing a song does nothing...

It is all art and art is, by its very nature, completely subjective. Therefore, I don’t ever take any offense to anything anyone ever says about music. Don’t get me wrong, I often disagree with their observations. However, I’m never offended by it. Nobody should be offended by any of my opinions either. It’s all a bunch of BS.

I don’t know who is overrated or underrated but I will tell you that the following are bands that people seem to think are great that I’ve just never heard it.

That doesn’t mean that they’re terrible, per se. They may be wonderful, I don’t know? However, these are the bands whose music I have heard and I don’t get it...at all.

Aerosmith
KISS
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin

I think the latter two make a little more sense than the former two. I have never understood the appeal of either Aerosmith or KISS? I kind of get the AC/DC thing, if only for it is pure seventh grader boy cock rock. It’s not complex, it is not layered or clever. It is just pure masturbatory guitar. That doesn’t interest me, but I can see why it might interest others.

Also, I guess Led Zeppelin is bluesy and people like that too. I just don’t hear anything in it that is all that interesting to me. I really feel like you if you’ve heard one of their songs, you’ve heard them all. The same goes for Rage Against the Machine from a different era.

Van Halen was just OK with David Lee Roth - cheesy by kitschy. They were absolutely atrocious without him and they decided to take them selves very seriously. Sammy Hagar?! Are you effing kidding me? Hard pass.

Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Warrant, Guns ‘n Roses, Bon Jovi - really, that whole scene, I just never got it. I think that’s the worst era of music in American history. It was just very banal and incredibly boring. It wasn’t at all interesting to me at the time and it is less interesting in retrospect.

I think the British music from that same timeframe was leaps and bounds better than what we were producing. Again though, that’s just one person‘s opinion. However, it is a very firm opinion.

didn't you once mention you taught CCD class....hmmm

I still teach a CCD class. Well, technically, we call them faith formation classes, but it is basically the same thing. We don’t discuss cock rock in it.

It is actually a pretty strict curriculum. There’s not a ton of room to freelance there. We have too much material to get through.

However, acceptance of people who don’t look or act or think like they do is definitely something we discuss.

Why anyone would find any of that threatening or in any way objectionable is anyone’s guess?

Falling down drunk guy at karaoke night would do a better job of covering Dylan that Dylan did.
Funny you say that, I've done Karaoke about 4 times in my life, and every time I did Dylan, I did "Blowing in the Wind" and "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Tangled up in Blue" with a really exaggerated, cartoonish, nasal Dylan voice and I practically got standing ovations every time and yeah, I was drunk.

Just saw Afghan Whigs in Cleveland last month. One of my all time favorite bands.
