OT: NBA Thread

I’ve been saying it all playoffs. If LeBron and AD are both playing well and they get virtually any consistent support from the role players they’re so hard to beat. Rondo is having a huge first half and it’s no surprise it’s a 19 point game right now.

The Heat have no offense tonight. Going to be real hard to get back into this one as the Lakers have not even played too well on O either until the last few minutes.

Something about this game that is bothering me to no end is that the officials are letting Duncan Robinson take 3-4 steps every time he attempts a 3. Sooner or later they have to make the call there as he has done it at least 3 times now.

Yeah, I am extremely upset about that as well

Rondo has been the best player in this series outside of the four star players. He has been the third best player for LAK since he returned from injury.

This playoff run will likely get him into the HoF once his career ends. He will have the accumulated stats, championships and he made 3-5 All-Star teams. People will remember him as a big winner (though the actual happenings were somewhat complicated), I am sure.

Andy Glockner posted this on twitter and I think I agree. LeBron is the best basketball player ever. Maybe not the greatest, but the best. I’m so thankful that I am old enough that I remember the last two-three Jordan titles and watched all of LeBron’s career.

Pope is a more significant player for the Lakers than one would expect

Yeah, he’s really had some clutch games for the Lakers in the playoffs. Really stepped up.

It says a lot that he’s the second smartest and second best passer on his team. Agree 100% about his HOF resume.

Question for you

When Butler was shooting foul shots to tie and put the Heat up at the end of Game 5, did you see James step in the lane way early?

What's up with all this praise for the decision to start Caruso?

I don't get it. Even a little.

Not a good look for the greatest player of all time, almost juvenile.

I wonder if James has one more championship in him after this one ... I think a lot will depend on how LA fills out the roster this offseason as the other Western Conference teams are gaining fast and I would imagine that the Clippers will be more focused next season.

I wouldn't bet against him!

They have almost everybody that is significant coming back + Avery Bradley who didn’t play in the playoffs. Green is due 15 million+ next year. They need to find a way to get him off the books and that would free up some space. If they stay healthy, then they have a good shot to win it all again.

Thanks for the reply (and I mean that)

FWIW... I did see that. And I think it did jump out at me. It’s just not enough for me to chastise him. I think there’s plenty of other stuff I’d point to if I want to call him out for being juvenile. Like how he would take constant passive aggressive shots at Kevin Love when he was in Cleveland.

LeBron won a championship with Dwight Howard, JaVale McGee, JR Smith, and Dion Waiters on the team.

Amazing.

His post game speech - particularly him saying he wanted his respect. GTFOH. There are those that don’t like him but there can’t be anyone who doesn’t respect his accomplishments. I know he’s done some wonderful things with education/charities/etc but good lord he really can be soooo annoying.

Maybe he should repeatedly cheat on his wife, not spend as much time with his family and go off on more gambling and golfing trips, keep his mouth shut and take no action in improving the situation for at risk students, be a complete dick towards his teammates, and put out more advertisements. Then maybe he will get the same amount of respect as MJ.

Bit of a tangent but ok. I agree that he’s seemingly a better person from what we know. And I said I know he’s done some wonderful things. Of course everyone thought Tiger Woods was a pristine god until he wasn’t. And FWIW I was really only referring to on court. I just think it’s silly for him to be whining about respect. He just won it all with a 3rd team. Never been done. He’s as great as he’s ever been at his age. There’s always gonna be haters. But by and large he’s very respected. Probably today more than ever.

Greatness is greatness. I don't care if someone does or says something you don't like. I mean look at Brady, he's a friggin crybaby and is known to operate in the margins of rules, that doesn't take away his greatness.

I hate when people try to compare greatness, they feel they have to tear someone down to make their point.

LBJ is the best, MJ is the greatest. A lot of MJ fans enjoy taking shots at LeBron - it's too bad he lets in...

James is still upset that he was resoundingly not the MVP. That is where the disrespect comment came from. He has missed a few MVP awards now that easily should have been his, but by the same token he has at least one that should have been on Kobe Bryant's mantle, so things even out a little.

Yeah I think Jordan deserved the MVP in 98 more than Malone.
I would have voted for LBJ this year.
Kareem lead the NBA in win shares and PER for 10 straight seasons but "only" got six MVPs.
Voters like to vote for variety in MVPs probably a little more than they should.

Yeah, I agree.

I think Kobe deserved it more than LeBron in 09 and 10, but LeBron should definitely have more than 0 MVP awards since 2013. It felt like at that point, the voters just became tired of giving the trophy to LeBron each year. The truth is, LeBron is the MVP every year from about 2011 and forward, just like Jordan was for every year in the 90s that he played, Shaq was between 1999 and 2003 and Kobe was between about 2005-10.

If you go by WS and WS/per48, (as I do) Kobe shouldn't have gotten the MVP's as you suggest. Even in his MVP year, he was 4th.

Going by the year by year leader in win shares gives you a very solid list of theoretical MVPs. The only counter I see is it would benefit very high usage Adrian Dantley (MVP over Bird in 1984? No) and James Harden probably more than the eye test.

Adrian Dantley was a likely a very underrated player.

I try to be open minded, so I'd be up for the case. My gut just is saying "no no no, he is a guy who took 18 seconds off the shot clock to take a turnaround 17 foot jump shot 30 times a game and who constantly annoyed all his teammates and coaches."

The interesting situation about him is he was a guy who could lead the league in scoring at over 30 points per game and then finish 15th(!!) in MVP voting. I can't think of anyone else in NBA history with such a resume.

How would you remember all of this about him? His teammates didn't like him? He ran the shot clock all the way down? All he did was shoot turnaround jump shots? Thats a very tough shot, to shoot at such a high amount. 15th in mvp voting?
I liked him and thought his game was pretty good. I never knew all of this, cool.
