OT: New Music

I first saw him on the CBS Sunday Morning show, but for those of you bemoaning the lack of good rock and roll music nowadays, check out Gary Clark Jr.

He was on Howard Stern not that long ago. I had never heard of him up to that point but after hearing him I’d agree. He’s good.

Good stuff. Thanks.

I just checked out some of his stuff on youtube, and there is quality concert footage going back at least to 2011.

I mean, he won a Grammy back in 2014 so he’s not exactly new. But I’ve been stuck in the same music catalogue I’ve said since 2007 so I’m looking to expand.

As an aside, I also discovered Colson Whitehead on CBS Sunday Morning and his novels are fantastic.

Plenty of good music out there, but it doesn't receive the same treatment on the radio and tv that a lot of new crap gets.

Google indicates this guy has been around since the 80s, so I’m curious how your comment is relevant in a thread about new music.

I gotta be honest, the CBS Sunday Morning Show wouldn't be my first choice if I were looking for some good, new rock and roll music. Kudos for that. Give a listen to The Raconteurs if you haven't before. No idea how long they've been around but they're not on the radio. I do like some of the new stuff. IMO Post Malone is pretty good. To each their own.

Raconteurs as in Jack White's band? They've been around for over a decade or so, even had a few minor hits early on.

I always thought that Gary Clark and Art Monk were a remarkable tandem and they made beautiful music together. I had no idea that he was also such a talented musician.

ACL is a GREAT show! I have stumbled across so many good artists/bands over the years through that show.

I know you said new music but you also mentioned Rock and Roll and it always surprises no one mentions built to spill. Such a great rock band.

This cover of Cowgirl In The Sand by Built To Spill might be one of greatest covers ever along with their cover of Cortez The Killer also.

Just got home from Courtney Barnett doing her one person show at the Carnegie Lecture Hall. (Just her and an electric guitar.)

Can't quite put into words how wonderful she really is.

Oh dude, I really like everything I hear from her. I wish I could have seen her.

Really? I heard it was pedestrian at best.

I really like the Decemberists. Great band! Not new by any means, but absolutely outstanding.

Hasn't that always been the case? They play old Casey Kasem Top 40's which was based on radio airplay on the Sirius 70's channel weekend mornings and 98% of the songs are horrid, crap like Muskrat Love and Mandy. The 80's channel plays a Top 40 hosted by the old MTV VJ's and most of that is garbage and I remember that garbage more since I came of age in the 80's. By the 90's I had a CD player in my car and stopped listening to the radio since it was either the same songs over and over again.

New music. I do like Barnett. Kurt Vile. Civil Wars. New Kid on Drugs. Decemberists. Not all new music is crap.

But man, new "pop" music? Yeah. Blows. Sucks. Garbage. This is where the 70's excelled, the pop music was just as good as the "rock".

It depends. I don’t care for Billie Eilish’s mumble singing, but some of Lizzo’s songs are fun! Pop music always has its fair share of good and bad stuff.

"New Kid on Drugs?" LOL

Speaking of modern pop music, have you heard that song by the Weeknd called “Blinding Lights”? Holy crap, if I close my eyes while listening to it, I’d feel like I was at the SuperGames or Golf n Stuff arcade playing Galaxian and PacMan. The song sounds more 80’s than half of the songs from the 80’s.

Song was used in I think 2012 NFL DRAFT commercial. Best young blues guitarist out there
