It was once my favorite sport, but I find the NHL largely unwatchable anymore. I don’t know why that is but it is what it is. I’m not sure it’s the size of the rink, size of the players, the systematic reality of today’s game, or something else. If I turn it on, I can’t even watch for 5 minutes. Unless it’s OT. Then I can watch it. And last night I happened to turn the Penguins on and watch their overtime win. So it had me wondering, is there a recipe on how to win in OT? Obviously you need talent and good skaters. Maybe faceoff wins play into it as well. I also have realized that you do not want to miss the net on a angled wrister because the puck often goes around the boards and results in an odd man break the other way. Some of these teams seem more successful in OT than others. Shouldn’t these teams be studied to see what they are doing? Given that everything comes down to analytics these days, I’m sure they are. But just wondering.

Yeah, the Pens have definitely been studying it and talking about it a lot lately. Because what you saw yesterday was more the exception than the rule - the Pens winning instead of losing in OT.

Two main things about winning in OT.

1) You got to possess the puck. Obviously.

2) HIT THE NET!!! This has bit the Pens really bad this year. They miss the net on a shot, or make a bad pass and the other team is off to the races on a 2-1 or ever a 2 on 0 break.

Of course, having Letang back makes alot of difference, when they get Sid back, that will too.

Letang had a chance to get a puck deep last night and get off the ice. He didn’t. He made a lazy decision, and got caught. He ended up having to stay on the ice longer as the Flames kept the puck for another minute. Luckily they didn’t score.

The NHL's biggest problem is that there are too many people involved in the game that cling to old fashioned notions about the game. The league really can't get out of its own way sometimes. It's difficult for new fans to understand why you can crosscheck sometimes and it gets overlooked and why sometimes it doesn't.

To me, the new overtime is more exciting but it would be like playing 7 v 7 for NFL overtime. Just weird to change the game so much. Also, the concept of losing in overtime being better than just losing outright is dumb.
