OT: NHL TV ratings are terrible

You are seriously going to tell me that the NHL makes more overall revenue than the EPL? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. The EPL probably makes more in jersey sales than the NHL makes from all sources.
Can you read? No they are behind but NHL has found a way. They are raising their cap as well. Might be because they pay players crap.

Are you listening to yourself? Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Friends are ABSOLUTELY not making less worldwide revenue than a hockey league who has fans in 7 or 8 countries. Do you know how ridiculous that is? What on Earth gave you this idea? The EPL makes FAR FAR FAR FAR more revenue than the NFL. And we're comparing it to the NHL? You have to be playing with me. You cannot be serious.

Man City made 1 billion dollars (800 English pounds) worldwide 3 years ago.

Chelsea made $640 million

And there’s a few clubs in between who made less than city and more than Chelsea.

Hey, look, another one of those things that you are absolutely sure about that you are also absolutely wrong about.

In 2023 the NFL's revenue was $20.2 billion. The EPL's revenue in the 22-23 season was $7.5 billion. One of those is, indeed, FAR FAR FAR FAR more than the other.

By way of comparison, for the 22-23 season the NHL's revenue was $6.4 billion. Or in other words, much close to the EPL's revenue than the EPL is to the NFL.

The NBA was second in overall revenue at $13.0 billion, and MLB was third at $11.6 billion.

Looks like top NHL revenue 3 years ago was Toronto, making 280 million.

Which I’m guessing is far more than the bottom half of the teams in the EPL. Just a guess though, as I enjoy the games and don’t care what the teams make.

The difference being, of course that every team in the NFL has revenues of more than half a billion dollars, whereas 12 or 13 of the 20 EPL teams brings in less than half of that.

Again, just a guess…but the EPL has 6 NY Yankees, 10-12 pirates, and 3 Indianapolis Indians.

First of all, the EPL is only 2/3 the size of the American leagues so there's 10-12 fewer teams to generate revenue. Second of all, there's, you can't easily compare revenue of the EPL to the American leagues because they are structured differently. The accounting is different. American teams are all franchises of their league so there is uniform accounting. EPL teams are all independent businesses who all have different and creative ways to show profits and losses.

Yeah, that's kinda it.

EPL Revenues by Club

This illustrates what I am talking about. I dont have a subscription to read the whole list but #14 Fulham shows $181 million in revenue. However, if you divide up the English and American TV deals, they bring in $127 million. That's before selling a ticket, a sponsorship, or selling TV rights in the other 200 countries. They aren't counting revenue the same as we Yanks do.

It's almost as if you haven't heard of Financial Fair Play rules. Teams that don't report their revenues the way that the league demands that they do get docked points.

Unless they are Man City.

Also, don't forget that one of the reason that a team like Fulham has much lower revenues than the bigger teams is that unlike the NFL, the EPL does not split their television money equally. Man City gets a lot more of that television money than Fulham does. Chelsea gets a lot more of that television money than Bournemouth does. Liverpool gets a lot more of that television money than Newcastle does.

Are there games on ESPN or ABC anymore? NBC did a pretty good job promoting weeknight games on its sports network and the national Sunday games. I thought once they were on ESPN they'd spend time on their shows talking about the league but really don't promote it much. I also haven't watch the Pens or Pirates since they switched networks.

If we are comparing the EPL and its popularity to the NHL fine. List me the other major pro sports leagues in England.

The NHL is very cyclical when it comes to its ratings success. This is also the dog days of the season when even diehards tune away. Plus, San Jose/Seattle on ESPN? I mean come on. Who at ESPN decided that would work?

Next week will be the true test for hockey on TV, the 4 Nations Face Off tournament. It’s the first best-on-best international hockey event during actual hockey season since the 2014 Olympics and the USA is the favorite (in my opinion). The US will have Auston Matthews, Jack Hughes and its other biggest stars together for the first time and Connor McDavid will be with Sid for Canada. Plus, Sweden and Finland are capable of winning with their rosters. There are games on ABC and ESPN prime time windows so those games will be true indicators of hockey ratings success.
Can't be best on best without Russia.

Jesus Christ your opinions don’t change the facts.

Who cares? They shouldn't be in it.
Anyone who wants to see the best hockey players in the world would include Russia. A Russian will soon pass Gretzky for most goals all time.

I'm sure this is some political mumbo jumbo. Meanwhile Russia is doing just fine and that sanction stuff they tried made them stronger. So let's punish them by not letting them into a hockey tournament. That's weak.

Not that long ago, they were a whole lot of Op-eds written by Big J Journos and push from the highly intelligent activist types to have that guy thrown out of the league, deported, etc.

There are so many apples to oranges comparisons here, it doesn’t make any sense to debate. Like none.

I don’t even know what people are arguing. Lol.

The EPL is the 4th most profitable league in the world, but it’s not because of what it does domestically in a 60 million population country. It just happens to be the most popular soccer league worldwide…yet it competes worldwide with every countries domestic leagues. The EPL should be compared to LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and every other domestic soccer league….and not be compared to the NHL. Soccer is its own animal.

But the big teams in the EPL make money outside of the EPL because they play in multiple competitions. Teams like Man City play in the EPL, then play in the UEFA champions league (Europe), 2 other domestic cup competitions and then the Club World Cup here in the US this summer. There’s lots of ways to make money and that’s why Man City probabky made a billion dollars last year. How can that be compared to an nhl team? It’s not a fair comparison.

So again…whats the argument? I guess he wants to say EPL has better tv ratings in the US than the NHL? And to that I say, who cares…we like what we like. I’d argue that both are niches. And that doesn’t make me feel inferior.

As a LONG TIME hockey fan. I don't care if it is a niche sport. I seen what commercialism (literally) has done to the NFL making it a sport sandwiched between commercials. The over exposure. I am fine with it being niche. The A Team was much more popular and viewed than say the TV series Southland, it doesn't make it better. Mambo #5 got more airplay than Tool, but it doesn't make it better. I know what SMF is trying to do, it is going over like a lead balloon. More people play soccer in the US than hockey. So...........................do the math.

Back when I was younger and Mario was my favorite athlete and the pens were my favorite team in any sport, what he was doing was magical. I wanted to see the sport grow. I wanted him to grow it. He didn’t. Then Sid and Ovechkin came along, and while they can’t hold Mario’s jock, they couldn’t grow the league either. No matter what the league does, they aren’t going to make jimmy’s and Joes in Alabama care. They aren’t going to make Jerome in the urban centers care. They aren’t going to make Miguel in the growing Hispanic populations care. And they aren’t going to make people in Columbus care if the Blue Jackets aren’t playing. And that’s ok. I learned to enjoy it for myself…until something weird happened inside of me and I don’t care much anymore (I think my interest started eroding as mike Lange was taken off tv…that’s part of my theory). I don’t know why people get so provincial (if that’s the right word) about the sports they like so they have to put the others down.

I don’t think SMF likes the NFL either but he doesn’t put that down. I guess it’s a harder target. The NBA is a tough target too.
