So I stayed up to watch the entire Oscars last night (a mistake) but now I have strong feelings (not really) that I want to share.

1: I enjoyed Chris Rock as host. Much improved over NPH last year, who I think is way better sticking with the Tonys. I thought his opening monologue was appropriately unsettling, and I got a kick out of seeing the audience struggle as to whether they should laugh or not.

2: Sam Smith's Bond song was terrible. His performance was terrible. His win was bogus. Also, you weren't the first openly gay Oscar winner. Sorry. Gaga should have won.

3: I didn't see Room and by all accounts Brie Larson was fantastic. But I was rooting so hard for Saoirse Ronan to win. Brooklyn isn't the type of movie I generally see, but it was maybe my 3rd favorite film I saw this year and she was outstanding.

4: I'm just going to pretend Alicia Vikander won for Ex Machina. That's all.

5: I'm over Inarritu. Birdman was horribly overrated and so was The Revenant. George Miller should have won. Mad Max was fantastic.

6: See #5. Mad Max should have beaten out Spotlight.

7: Glad DiCaprio won, but it was undeserved. His last two roles (Revenant and Wall Street) were overrated. He probably should have won for Aviator or Catch Me if you Can. Still super hyped for Devil in the White City.

Good thoughts. If you know the story of holmes, I think devil is going to be great.

I thought rock was outstanding.

I thought it would have been cool seeing Stallone win, but he really didn't deserve it. I'm also glad Spotlight won and I agree about The Revenant. I thought it was going to be great and it was just OK to good. It really wasn't close to being special and Tom Hardy didn't deserve an Oscar nomination as 50 other actors could have done the same.

My reaction to The Revenant was similar to Bridge of Spies. In both movies, I could appreciate technical aspects of the movie (The Revenant, especially, had some very nice shots). Both movies were well acted. But I left the theater thinking "That's it?" I realize this is all personal reaction here, but both movies ultimately fell flat for me. If I compare that to Brooklyn, Ex Machina, or Mad Max, all of which really left me affected (though in different ways) the latter three are way better.

I never watch that stuff, but I saw the Revenant, and I thought it was good-ish. I mean, pretty basic premise, and the acting was good, but I didnt get lost in the movie or anything, pretty much felt the whole time, this is dicaprio acting. I dont feel bad he one, good for him, but it says a lot he wins for a role in which he barely speaks. I thought the other actors in the movie did as good or better.

About the color issue. I dont think there were that many movies out there that could have been nominated. I heard people talking about Creed. That movie was nearly unwatchable for me, I like that actor, and I think he was nominated for fruitville station (he was also good in the show parenthood). But come on, just because he is a decent actor of color doesnt mean every role he is in should be nominated (although that does seem to happen to others, so maybe I am wrong). Just 2 years ago they nominated an 8 year old african american girl for an oscar. I rather like they select who deserved it based on merit. If anything, there should be more focus on why so many people get nominated for gay roles. Seems to be an inordinate amount based on general public.

I agree... I watched Mad Max and Brooklyn together on an international flight and thought "holy Sh!t" I just saw two surprisingly good movies. I went into mad max thinking I was going to hate the movie. The premise of it wasnt oscar worthy winning I think, and I think Spotlight was. I try to watch most of the oscar nominated films and I thought Spotlight should have been the winner, so I was happy.

I left The Revenant a little irked with the Indian lady just starring at DiCaprio in the final minute. He saved your behind, lady.

Thought Leo's best actor award was well deserved. He won for the harsh conditions he had to maintain character in while shooting revenant. He had to jump in an ice cold river and act that's pretty impressive. Also was happy with spotlight winning was a solid film well constructed, and the plot flowed nicely leaving very few dull moments.

1. I thought this thread was going to be memes of actors reacting at the Oscars.

2. The Revenant was almost unwatchable. Incredibly boring and I was the target demo.

I'm surprised you like Mad Max...
Most reviews I read said it was just an awful, awful movie..and I really have zero interest in watching it.

Agree with you on Ex Machina...I can't believe that didn't get more love, it was amazing.

The stacey dash moment was unbeliveably awful and awesome

Interesting. I didn't see Mad Max in theater and it was only because of a ton of really positive reviews that I decided to watch it. I will admit, a lot of what motivated me to see it was the fact that the MRA crowd was so upset at the evil feminist message, but I ended up finding it really entertaining and well done.

I liked Ex Machina because, in a climate where most movies are sequels and reboots, it felt new and interesting.

Stacey Dash being a black woman who is the anti liberal, showing up at the biggest liberal event on the planet, well you knew that wasn't gonna go over well. Surprised they didn't arrest her at the entrance..

I liked it because, during the movie I could think of about 4 different ways the story could go...and was still a bit shocked at how it ended.

I think it was awesome bc i dont think she knew she was being used as fish chum.

I don't think she cared. All publicity is good publicity. Having said that, during an evening when perceived injustice and intolerance was highlighted, bringing her out was extremely mean spirited. Once again an example of if you agree with me you're cool, if you don't, you're not. I love film but Hollywood is tiresome. Have never liked any political lectures in that venue. Let's just celebrate the movies. But that's just me.

a minimum of one political agenda must be pushed at these awards or it comes off as 100% self congratulatory instead of 99%. these stars sleep better at night thinking they are doing something worthwhile, even if it is just an allusion..

I really don't have a problem with any of the winners taking a moment to speak of something they are passionate about (last night - DiCaprio and even though it was misguided, Sam Smith) but using the entire show as a pulpit turns me off. Call me shallow, but I just want to have some laughs, see the fashion and celebrate the movies.

I agree pitt girl, chris rock was funny and all but over did it with the racism card.. A few jokes is good, make light of it, calling out Jada was good too but it was 98% of his dialogue.. OK we get it, move on.. Jokes about grandma getting lynched and hanging from a tree?? Maybe should save that one for the HBO special, although I did like the Brianna panty joke..

Regarding dash, Hollywood and liberal America are tolerant and screaming about diversity up until you disagree with their point of view. If that is different, they are about as tolerant as a Klan Rally. they want the allusion of diversity moreso than the real thing.. More than a sense of irony when Hollywood shuns a black actress with a differing opinion.

As a program, I thought the production was disappointing to the point of being almost unwatchable. I found it to be incredibly boring. I'm a huge Chris Rock fan, but he beat the African American issue to death. (There's an old saying in show business that it's not wise to tell more than three jokes about one subject, so if that's true, last night's performance was overkill.)

For me, the performance by Lady Gaga ("Til It Happens To You") was mixed. She's an amazing talent; the topic was/is extremely poignant and necessary; but the actual music was just meh. (Maybe I would've liked it more if it had been scheduled earlier in the show?)

I don't expect a lot of agreement with me, but that's okay....

I'm not much of a Gaga fan. She's way, way too over-the-top for me. Having said that her rendition of Sound of Music songs last year (?) at the Oscars was breath taking. Unbelievable voice.

I agree with you. This should be a celebration of the movies, not a rally for political causes.

By the way, have you seen Spotlight? I thought The Rev was a shoo-in for POTY until I saw Spotlight. Several of the other nominated films were very good, imo, but I thought Spotlight was the best of the bunch. What say you?

I always find choosing 1 picture every year challenging because they are all so different. For me this year my favorites were Bridge of Spies, Spotlight, Room and Brooklyn. I would have been happy with any of them winning, but my favorite was Brooklyn - just a beautiful film with great performances.

I gave-up trying to guess which movie will win Best Picture after "Gandhi" beat-out "E.T." For me, that was the greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards.

Confession: I made my OP having not seen Spotlight. Just finished it and I'm totally cool with it winning.

I felt that way when Forrest Gump beat out shawshank. Forrest Gump was a pretty stupid movie.
