OT: Oscars......

No I was referring to those who were ridiculing others for having parties, etc.
Not surprised that half of this thread is people teeing off on the Oscars. It's an OT thread. Not unlike the NBA threads here. Lots of curmudgeons dive in to criticize those that do watch.

Now, that was ridiculous. Both having a living person in the Memory Of... segment and PWC handing over the wrong envelope.

Otherwise, good fun and some nice surprises.

I'd honestly say Editing was the biggest surprise for me. Never saw Hacksaw winning that over the competition. And, disappointed that The Handmaiden and Elle didn't place in the Best Foreign Language category. Though, that's probably due to South Korea and France not selecting either as their choice for the category. Those were two of my favorites of the year.

Wanted Kubo over Zootopia but, hell, Zootopia was pretty great. So... No real gripe there.

Wish Arrival had won a bit more.

And, didn't realize they would be this kind of backlash for Affleck after he won. But, certainly understand why some/many women aren't comfortable with given the allegations he settled out of court in 2010.

Unfortunately, I tuned in just when I saw Afleck win the best actor and Denzel was pouting in his seat like the little sissy he is. Maybe he was just drunk. He definitely didn't deserve the award.

To be honest, I saw the cluster$#@% that was the best picture award and laughed. Typical Hollywood. I don't even know anything about the best picture, whatever it was. Moonshine or Moonglow or whatever. I'm sure they could have chosen a much better, more well known film, but didn't have the balls to do it. La La Land, which they announced originally, was a much better choice. So were all of the other films nominated. But again, this is Hollywood and those kooks can't do anything right.
Moonlight was outstanding. But, yeah, not my pick. Of the movies nominated I'd say Arrival and Manchester were my favorites. The others ranged from very good (Moonlight, Hell Or High Water) to good (Hidden Figures, La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge) to, well, kind of average (Lion).

Favorite non-foreign language that I've seen this year would be Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Green Room, Neon Demon, Kubo and the Two Strings and Arrival.

I'd actually be very curious to hear our own Kiwi's thoughts on Hunt For The Wilderpeople...

I don't pay much attention to what celebrities say about anything - the only time their words cross my path is when I read about people complaining that they shouldn't say anything. It is the double standard that I'm commenting on: voting for a celebrity with whom you agree, while at the same time claiming that celebrities should be ignored.

I would challenge your assertion that backlash over celebrity support for Clinton was much of a factor in this election. Maybe there are exit polls that show this, and if there are, then I stand corrected. But the effects of Russian hacking, and more importantly the last-minute FBI announcement, were much more critical for the "Not Hillary" voter.
I honestly believe the way things are now, celebrity backlash had at least to do with the impact. Most of the inert that would have to be spurred to vote would be the types that wouldn't be paying attention to the Russian or FBI stuff (because that's closer to real news). But they pay attention to superficial things, like celebrity crap. And the Toby Keith element who are naturally offended by much of what happens in the two "left" coasts were sick of being preached at what bad people they are. That got just enough of em up and voting to give trump those razor slim margins in those 3 states (Wisconsin, Michigan, PA) that nobody thought he'd win.

The celebrity community is out of control with their hypocrisy and does their causes more harm than good when they need the heartland ... maybe they're right to have such contempt, maybe they're wrong ... but they most definitely have it, and enough people got tired of hearing it and delivered an FU.

Well, Beatty looked pretty mummified, so did Dunaway. Makeup by Portland Cement.
Beatty and dunaway have to be pushing 80. Bonnie and Clyde was circa 1967. Lets face it they are the Dick Groat of Hollywood. Put this in perspective NTOP it would be like a silent film star from 1910 announcing the 1967 Oscar for Bonnie and clyde. We would all be sitting there going " wtf".

I think mistakes/gaffes like this actually is a good thing. Honestly, if this didn't happen, this envelope mistake, would anyone still be talking about the Oscars. No, of course not. I hope they dont' take themselves too serious and make this awkward moment more than it is. it's an awards show for movies, not exactly life and death issues.. laugh at yourself and move on..

So, we loved Kubo. But Zootopia was fantastic. I literally almost fell out of my seat laughing during the sloth/DMV scene.

I too think Arrival should have won more or at the very least Amy Adams should have been nominated. We bought the Blu-Ray last week. This is the kind of movie that is well suited for home viewing away from a noisy theater (it really is a very delicate story) and it was nice to watch it again, understanding more about the whole story. The bonus content ( Xenolinguistics: Understanding Arrival) was excellent and the cast/crew talked how important the use of language is for communication. I highly recommend watching it.

I do not know much about editing so it's interesting that you say Hacksaw was a surprise. I look forward to finally watching it when it's released on Blu-ray. I will admit the knowledge that the violence of war was very accurate in this movie gave me pause. I have a hard time sitting through films like that.

I've seen the features on Arrival. All incredible. Couldn't agree more.

As for editing, just felt the transition and overall piecing together of Arrival and Moonlight. I thought the Sounding Mixing and Editing, at least of the nominees, was easily the best though.

Very strange. Didn't expect to see this story emerge.
Honestly - I was very skeptical about that whole skit. There is no way they could not have vetted these people before letting them in. I guess it could have been done through the website that sells the bus tickets? I also believe they had some inkling about what was going to happen. They were surprised looking but not nearly as overwhelmed as I would expect someone to be going in completely cold. JMO.

If the bused in folks were in on it, then I imagine the vetting is perfectly fine. If they're not - and, I honestly don't know - are they allowed to vet like that?

They and their movies/shows are a complete joke!
Like the NFL more people are beginning to turn them off not buy tickets etc.
They are alot of angry "selfish creeps" who look really ridiculous at this time!
Hope they move the production studios and the people to Canada and France like one studio owner suggested!
We could use the space for something productive like manufacturing facilities.

Great question - not sure. Are people who ride these tour buses checked for any weapons, etc.? Or maybe more likely they were "swept" upon entering the building which would make more sense. NO WAY these people get in off the streets with no security.

Your thoughts on Casey Affleck and the controversy surrounding his nomination and win, pitt girl?

Sticky Wicket. The allegations against him were settled with monetary compensation, so it's hard to say if/what was true about them. I do think it would be very hypocritical for Hollywood to suddenly develop a conscience about criminal behavior, since there is an abundance of historical criminal wrongdoing which is later "forgotten/forgiven". Personally, I think he deserved it.

BTW - yet another reason why Ryan Gosling walks on water for me. Check out his face during the best picture snafu.

His reaction was priceless. He's a bit of different breed the rest involved on it. I honestly don't think he cares nearly as much as many of the others that were on stage. Dude's best work and the work that I believe he's enjoyed most was working with guys like Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) and Derek Cianfrance (Place Beyond The Pines, My Blue Valentine). One makes extremely art house, perverse stuff and the other pumps some of the most defeatist, depressing stuff this side of friggin' Igmar Bergman. He seems more at home there than anywhere else. Sure, he'll play his hand in comedy (Nice Guys, Lars and the Real Girl) and movies with a message (The Big Short, Ides of March). But, he wants to work with art house filmmakers. Next up for him is a flick with Terence Malick - pretty much every actors dream to work with Malick by the way - and then the upcoming Blade Runner sequel with the already uber-acclaimed Denis Villenueve (Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival.)

His interview with Nicholas Winding Refn when he amicably questioned him about the lengths the director chose to go with the necrophilia scene in Neon Demon is pretty hilarious.

Edit: Random aside, no offense to Emma Stone who's a very talented, likeable up and coming actress but between she and Gosling, it's not close. Honestly, between she and the other nominees for Best Actress, throw in Viola Davis because that should've been a leading role nomination. And, hell, throw in Amy Adams in both Arrival and Nocturnal Animals... She's not close there either. She's certainly likeable but, man, I guess I don't really get it.

Agree about Stone, although her role was very delicate as was Adam's in Arrival. I thought the same about Jennifer Lawrence the year she won for Silver Linings Playbook. IMHO she wasn't even the best actor in the whole movie - thought Bradley Cooper's performance was much stronger. Oftentimes it's how Oscar races all play out, lots of intangibles.

Gosling is definitely an interesting cat. He's not traditionally handsome, but wow, he leaves his mark. He can seamlessly transition from a lighter role to a performance like in "Drive". Really, really looking forward to the next installment of Blade Runner. FWIW - he does shares incredible on screen chemistry with Stone. I like them together.

I think Malick is over blown. Although he has directed some very good films, The Tree of Life was pretentious and boring, or perhaps I'm not cool enough to get it. JMO.

Agree about Malick. His best days are well behind him. BUT, actors love working with him. He seems to get essentially whoever he wants. Just look at the cast of any movie he's made after his hiatus. But, yeah, I didn't love Tree Of Life. I did like Thin Red Line and New World and I did love Badlands and Days Of Heaven.

And, yeah, I almost brought up Lawrence as well. And, she's incredible. But, honestly, wasn't exactly incredible in Silver Linings Playbook. She's been much better elsewhere IMHO.
