Per Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported today the the PAA contents set for sheriff's sale.

The auction scheduled for 10:30 am Tuesday.

Again Pitt should look into the possibility of purchasing the PAA.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

This is just contents of bldg. Building owned by separate corp. If bldg were to go on market, Pitt would probably actively pursue.

Anyone know how likely Pitt is to purchase? Who would the major competition be?

If Pitt does not buy this land, we need a change in leadership. A prime piece of property and historic building ON CAMPUS does not become available too often.

I'm sure we wont though. I smell more luxury condominiums. We cant have enough of those.

Likely some private/commercial interests in that building that will raise the final price. Pitt will certainly be looking and putting in an offer, but would be shocked to see them fall below what it ultimately goes for (which will be above market price anyhow).

lol, it is pretty much the primest of prime in regards to location, it is on campus as much as possible for pitt.. not sure what's up with that hyatt though, they are building it in the parking lot behind it, between 5th and bigelow right? You'd think that hyatt, if it's not to late, would want that spot to make a bigger hotel..

the thought of another chain hotel, one literally in the shadows of the cathedral, is actually vomit inducing..

If Pitt cannot beat the highest bidder for an on-campus prime building, then alumni should commission an investigation as to why a university with one of the largest endowments in the nation is so poor.

The city and county would (likely already has been doing) do whatever it could to keep it away from Pitt and owned by a commercial entity they could tax. And, just in general principle, because Pitt and UPMC are twin devils and convenient whipping boys for local ills.

sorry to ask a dumb question here but what's the appeal for Oakland real estate from a commercial entity standpoint over any other place in Pittsburgh? I get the school, multiple hospitals as well as a UPMC administrative presence so the 8000 chain hotels at least make sense from a business perspective but why the appeal for others?

we've all been to Oakland and we all have fond memories of our college days but to be honest, even though it's improving, well I don't see the appeal. we got the old-heads on here talking about how it's a nightmare to get in and out of, well wouldnt' that be a detraction for a typical commercial or private entity? no real public transportation, I mean busses but that's miserable so no T line in the works. i just don't get why it's so valued over any other place..

Tell me a business, outside of hotels, that would really want to be right there, on 5th, across from the cathedral? condos? I wouldn't want to buy a condo right there if im a well off young adult. if i had kids, no way in hell. office buildings? Terrible idea, way to much unnecessary aggravation for the employees, limited parking, pain in azz traffic.. what other business would benefit from being on an urban campus?

Not being real familiar with Oakland I have one pertinent question. What is the PAA?

This is a very expensive piece of property and the bankruptcy court could care less about the University of Pittsburgh. I don't like our chances to be the highest bidder. This building would be a great addition to our campus if it happens though.

The Pittsburgh Athletic Association is a private social club and athletic club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Its clubhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[3]

Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard in the city's Oakland district, it faces three other landmark buildings: the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning and William Pitt Union as well as the Soldiers and Sailors National Military Museum and Memorial.

The club was organized in 1908 by real estate developer Franklin Nicola. Architect Benno Janssen (1874—1964) used a Venetian Renaissance palace as a prototype for his design, perhaps Palazzo Grimani or Libreria on Piazza San Marco. He completed the structure in 1911.

The Pittsburgh Athletic Association is a nonprofit membership club chartered in 1908. It has run into financial difficulties recently and had its liquor license temporarily suspended for not paying Allegheny County drink taxes. Recently, the electricity and water has been cut off to the PAA.

It used to offer comprehensive athletic facilities, sports lessons, spa services, fine dining, and overnight accommodations. Some of the building's more interesting features include a pool on the third floor, full basketball and squash courts, a 16 lane bowling alley, and a room dedicated to former University of Pittsburgh football coach Johnny Majors. The club has several annual events, the most popular including an Easter brunch, a lobster dinner, and collegiate boxing events.

Allegheny co. Will fight to keep it as a tax generator

Question for the Board.

Didn't the PAA open up a room in honor of Johnny Major (a number of years ago) which contained some Pitt memorabilia in it.

If they are selling the contents of the PAA, would that also include Pitt items which I guess the University would be interested in retaining.

That isn't how "market price" works. Pitt has the same problem understanding and thus has stuck themselves in a corner. Market price will be what the market would pay for it.

It is possible the county takes a lower sales price, so Pitt can't get it and they can get a "tax revenue generator" in that space, though.

Yes, there is a Johnny Majors Room. I don't know what is in it. I doubt there is anything in there that the athletic department would be interested in seeing as they don't even have a proper hall of fame, but who knows.

I hope what gets sold off doesn't damage the historic integrity of the building itself.

Plus space is finite. I would argue it's worthwhile for pitt to overpay to acquire any property they can because the university can't move. We should do whatever we can to buy up whenever we can in Oakland.

It's likely more valuable to Pitt than any other bidder, and the bankruptcy court only cares about getting the most that it can.

For those worried about the county, their preference is meaningless.

Attended a couple of weddings there in the early 2000s. Place was very nice.

Also stayed at the U. Club in Oakland a couple of times. Love the college-themed pub in there.

The Club Room is history.
It looks like a Starbucks now.
Last time I was there was about 2002.

Are you talking about the College Room bar in the University Club, it was restored by Pitt in 2009 and looks like this currently:

There were people going in and out of there today. I wonder if it's in preparation of the sale?

I see more cyber-office types and job interviews going on at Starbucks than the hippie chicks. One of the great cons in history, convincing people that a cup of ordinary coffee is worth paying over $2.

I get depressed walking in a starbucks. I see people hanging out in them and I wonder why? If you have spare time, leisurely time, would you go to a starbucks? I mean, I get the coffee thing, although I don't like their coffee at all, some people do and that's fine and even sitting down for 5 or 10 minute and drinking it, I get. But these people bring bags with them to hang out for an hour or two, likes they are going to a picnic 21st century style. weird to me. people actually go there to hang out.

Exactly right. Plus, it has a basketball court inside so with the Pete being too big, we can eventually move our games there.

Wow, good to hear.
I heard differently.
Pool table is gone and so is the art, but looks like plenty was preserved.

The art in the University Club was auctioned off separately before Pitt got the building. There were supposedly some valuable pieces in it.

Pitt has done an outstanding job restoring the historic buildings it has acquired and repurposed and it has been recognized repeatedly in architectural and preservation circles for it.

There are more pictures of the University Club at its website: http://uc.pitt.edu/fsc-overview/photo-gallery-fsc/

They did a really good job on the Masonic Temple and Concordia Club too, and even Bellefield, and this really started back in the 80s when they restored the Union including the the decision not to take out the Louis XV style ballrooms and lobby. Can you imagine...there was actually a plan at one time to take the Union, gut it, and wrap it in a brutalist facade to match Posvar-Lawrence-Barco.

But, it looks like the PAA may eek out its existence long enough to get some revenue from the hotel coming in.
