Ot: penguins

I think Jarry or DeSmith needs to be given the majority of the workload for the next 2 weeks. Time to prep one of these guys for the long run in the playoffs.....or go trade for one. I don't see how you can rely on Murray to do the job in the playoffs this year. Whether it's what I said or a legit injury, no way will he be able to play 30 games in 3 months.

Pens lost to Carolina 4-0 last night .....

Some comments .......

- Pens having trouble with breakouts causing too much time in their end and scoring chances for the opponents.

- Sullivan made some changes in the offensive lines in the 2nd period and I don't think we had a shot on goal in the first 11+ minutes of that period .... still trying to figure out lines with new players on board and things will change more when Geno and Shultz come back.

- Power play didn't produce.

- We had 10 giveaways to Carolina's 5.

- Carolina is pretty fast and uptempo ...... they were also getting traffic in front of Murray and took more shots then us.

- We missed some great scoring chances ...... McCann and Crosby missed wide open nets.

- Carolina's goalie was really good.

- A look at the goals Murray gave up ......

Goal #1 - a shot from the top of the left circle through the legs of Pearson and slightly deflected off his leg which caused the puck to flutter and change direction slightly ..... Murray was in good position but fluttering puck hit the top of his glove and got by him into the net ...... the slight change in direction and fluttering of the puck and the puck going between Pearson's legs made the save more difficult indeed but in the end I thought he should have and needed to make that save.

Goal #2 - a shot from the point through traffic, Murray was screened and never saw the puck until it was in the net ..... his positioning looked OK.

Goal #3 - open netter with Murray on the bench.

Goal #4 - Carolina player beat Blueger to a puck just inside our zone near the right boards and went in on an off center breakaway against Murray ...... the puck carrier cut through the lower circle and into the low slot ...... Murray was initially in good position near the post but got behind on the play and way off angle and the Carolina player went around Murray and shot the puck from near the top of the crease on the ice beating Murray ...... as the puck carrier came through the lower circle and toward the top of the crease, Murray needed to move out and over to maintain best position and angle ..... he remained deep in the crease and close to the post and the opponent easily got around him ...... that was one that Murray played poorly.

- Bottom line, it was a team loss to me .....

- Pens now go on a 3 game road trip to play Florida who has won 6 of 8, Tampa Bay who is in 1st place, and the Flyers who won 8 in a row .....

- Entire Pens team needs to get it together and start to win games !

- In addition Murray has an "upper body injury" and is out "day to day" ..... Jarry has been called up and DeSmith should be in net tomorrow night ..... it's getting interesting to see if the Pens players and coaches can put it together.

Thank you for your inciteful PENS game comments.
I appreciate PENS hockey made simple if that's possible.

If it’s the alcohol it’s going to be a league violation sooner rather than later.

Somethings gotta give. This team is getting manhandled every night.

Some thoughts on the Pens ......

- We better get it into high gear or we could miss the playoffs.

- Defense has been overall poor of late especially the Johnson/Pettersson line ....... they were very good for 8-10 games but recently have been so bad that Sullivan had to split them up and put them on different lines ...... Maatta/Riikola haven't been a lot better ...... Letang/Dumoulin have been pretty good ..... we need to get Shultz back soon.

- We need to get Malkin back playing well and maybe ZAR as well, get the lines set especially with the new guys, develop chemistry, and hope to get more balanced scoring among the lines..... some of the forwards need to play better defense as well.

- Power play has to get better quickly.

- Cut out the short-handed goals which have been ridiculously common.

- Murray has to stay healthy and need to have consistency by the goalies.

- Players have to give maximum effort every night.

- Flyers who have been playing really well recently are next up ..... we need to win !

Don't worry goalieman, regular season is meaningless. Read it in this thread from hockey experts, so it must be true. Pens are a LOCK to make the playoffs.

Mrs Buffett and I love Sullivan.
In his first year he had a mix of rookies ( the little penquins from the AHL) and stars who mixed well.

The little penquins played great and actually pushed some of the stars.

As time moves on which is does it appears that the team has less rookies ( little penquins) and more stars who aren't playing up to their potential and are hard to manage.

The loss of guys like Cole and Boninno ( spelling?) hurt the Penquins as did the addition of Sprong and Brassad who both flunked out of PENS hockey school!

IMO to much change for the PENS to adjust to!

So after a big game last night there will never be any middle ground on Murray, one guy is complaining that the thread is two long and still another adding nonsense. Good discussion

The thread started 12/17/18??

Creat a Murray thread for the last game.

Posters create threads during a football, basketball, hockey or baseball seasons.
Creating one thread and posting to it all season about PENS stuff is kinda simple but there's a lot simple people who post on here!

Is there someone or something stopping you from posting another one?

@recruitsreadtheseboards started a single thread that lasted all season last year. Think of it as a Pantherlair tradition.

Just tune out.
Nice to have one single ot thread
Tune out still tuning in.
These adjustable wrenches are tricky??

Single thread it is. Ski convinced me and added some creditability to your argument.

Malkin gets a one game suspension for his match penalty last night against the Flyers.

I thought Malkin would get 1 to 3 games ...... what he did was reckless and inexcusable ...... I cringe to think what would have happened if he took the guys eye out.

Also very lucky. If he catches his face, it’s 10 games.

And if it hits the guy's thigh, it's not even a 2 minute penalty.

The problem is, the swingling of the stick was wreckless and deserves the suspension. The judges to say, in the face 5, top of the helmet 1, on the thigh 0. Pretty much saying swinging of the stick was ok, but making contact with the head while swinging was not ok.

Per PG, Maatta out at least a month with shoulder separation ..... hopefully Schultz back soon.

Pens vs Oilers tonight ..... need to win

Lines at practice today ......

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust

Pearson-Bjugstad-Kessel

Blueger-McCann-Hornqvist

Aston-Reese-Cullen-Wilson

Defense lines .......

Dumoulin-Letang

Riikola-Johnson

Pettersson-Ruhwedel

Murray in goal

Malkin out with one game suspension

Maatta out at least a month with a shoulder separation

Schultz still not quite ready

Simon looks to be a healthy scratch

These are tentative lines ..... Murray confirmed to be in goal at this point

I somewhat cringe at the defense pairings

I just drank a beer in celebration of Simon finally being benched. He's a bottom 6 that Sullivan forces on the top 6.

To that end, I like Riikola but he and Johnson will get lit up together. Having Schultz back will be a miracle.

Murray has been awful since hes returned from his injury in December

Not bad for a guy with a drinking problem.

Great win tonight. Murray was outstanding again. Huge save on a PK by McDavid at 2-1. Speaking of McDavid, he is on another planet. What a player. He’s the best player I’ve seen since the Mario/Gretzky days. Too bad other than Draisaitl, that team is filled with mediocrity.

McDavid is sooooo much faster in person and his skill set is out of this world.

Murray's penalty shot save won the game. Pens seemed kinda flat, not generating much offense. Sid has eyes all around his head.

Some things.....

1) Prior to Malkin's stick foul he was cross-checked and punched in the back of the head. If the refs call either penalty it doesn't happen. However, it does not absolve him for what he did.

2) I am liking Teddy Blueger

3) Murray has been pretty damn good lately, he needs to keep his head together and stay healthy

4) Not that this is a revelation, but we really are tremendous playing with a lead. That said, it would behoove us to start games on our toes and not on our heels as we so often have.

5) Lastly, when did our defense get so leaky, and why do we seem so lazy and not focused when we give up all these odd-man breaks? Will we ever win a game because we dominate a game offensively, and not because our goalie stands on his head?

- Good win for the Pens !

- I thought we had a really good forecheck tonight ..... dumped the puck in a lot and won battles in the offensive zone ..... nice puck pursuit.

- We did give up some odd man breaks especially in the 1st two periods ..... a couple were because our D-man pinched in the offensive zone, the puck was turned over and a forward/center didn't cover back for the D-man who pinched ..... I think there was another time we threw a blind pass from behind the Oilers net into the slot with 3 Pens behind the goal line and the pass was intercepted and led to an odd man break ..... Sullivan had them tighten things up later in the game.

- Actually I thought our defensemen did overall better then I expected with Maatta and Schultz out ...... Letang/Dumoulin played very well against the McDavid line ..... Ruhwedel for not playing an NHL game since November accounted himself well and Jack Johnson may have played his best game as a Penguin ...... Riikola/Pettersson were a little shaky at times but held there own and weren't terrible.

- Blueger with another big goal.

- McCann is getting better.

- 2nd line of Pearson-Bjugstad-Kessel had some problems but that line will be better when Malkin gets back and Pearson is moved down in the order.

- McDavid and Crosby are both unbelievable..... what a joy to watch those two !

- Murray with another outstanding game ..... 38 saves on 39 shots ..... in the last two games he has 88 saves on 90 shots on goal .... WOW ! ..... he was playing really nice and aggressive angles and positioning and when he does that, he tends to do very well ...... his post play was really good tonight also ..... he was reading plays and seeing the puck well ..... since he has come back from his injury, his glove hand has been MUCH better ..... of course, the save on McDavid's penalty shot was the save of the night ! ..... if Murray stays healthy and continues to work on the basics of his game, he should do fine ..... don't expect him to play every game as well as he did the last two but since his "comeback" he has been doing well and his advanced stats have been improving nicely.

- Gotta keep winning !

To your last point, 88 saves in two games is not exactly a recipe for success. Once Shultz is back Sullivan has to figure out a better d pairing than Riikola and Johnson. OTOH, Rueedhel hadn’t played since November and he was everywhere. That was impressive.

Yeah, if you average giving up 45 shots per game as we have in the last two games, it will be difficult to win consistently even if your goalie plays well.

Murray can stand on his head for the Penguins 10 games in a row, but as soon as he even gives up four goals in one game, the trools come callin.
This is the last I will post about Murray , just think its funny.
Lets Go Pens !! Need to beat a good Calgary team Saturday and NYR Sunday.
This is the time of the year where Hockey is King.

He played well 2 games in a row.

He is 24 years old and won 2 cups.
Penguins had no choice but to keep him and let Fleury go.
This hate for Murray is insane.

As is this incessant need to excuse poor play.

Everyone is making this too complicated.

Murray helped the Pens win two cups. Good. Choosing him over Fleury was the right call. Good.

All that matters now is Murray's play. Not what happened years ago. His play now. If it isn't good enough, he deserves to be called out. Why is that so hard?

You can keep repeating this, and it will continue to be not relevant to the present season
Fleury isn’t on the roster and hasn’t been.

Focus is on the current team and players

Malkin helped win 3 cups
He stinks this season., and that matters today

It's a long season, players such as Malkin and Murray have proven they deserve credit and will bounce back from bad games. The constant complaining after a poor performance is what it is...
Its not like there are 10 other goalies in the league that are available to the Penguins anyways that have proven they are capable of what Murray has already accomplished. You ride with what you have and coach them.

And since hes come back in December he has been playing at a very high level despite one or two average games.
