OT Pirates sign.....

Like Jose Tabata? Good news is that if you extend a young Guy's contract before he proves himself, you get a discount. The bad news is if the player doesn't develop, then you have to eat the contract. Time will tell....
They have taken shots like this on Cutch, Marte, Tabata and now Polanco. Tabata didn't work out but they didn't really have to eat to much on that one. Cutch's deal tuned out quite well. I think the others will work out fine too.

Yeah. Because of Meadows and Ramirez in the minors, signing Cutch to a ridiculous deal that will take him long into his mid 30's is stupid for the Pirates. Cutch has 2 years at most left here. Enjoy him. But the Pirates should be able to get some decent return for him.

The Pirates will have a major decision to make after next year, Cutch will be under their control for one year after that. You are correct that the Pirates should not go the 20 mil per year route on a guy approaching his mid 30s. There is a chance Cutch really wants to stay here and will settle for a more team friendly contract. That is rare in today's game but Cutch is a rare bird.

The point you make on the Pirates approach to all this is the key point. Eventually their stars will move on. Some sooner than later and developing guys like Meadows, Ramirez, Diaz, Taillon, Kingham, Glasnow, McGuire and Bell to move up and take their places is what the future rests on.

He's a top prospect just getting out of the low minors. I believe he is at AA Altoona this year.

Correct, probably can't handle CF long-term but should be able to play LF at PNC. Not like he needs to play CF, Marte or Polanco could both do fine there defensively.

Crazy prediction: Polanco finishes with a better WAR than Cutch.

I really don't want to see Polanco loping around in circles in CF. He tends to be a little too relaxes on a lot of plays. Doesn't read balls off the wall in right...what will he do if both walls + the Notch are in play. I'm hoping his power numbers go up this year, his patience has improved. Still a pup.
