Soccer is trending up. BB is trending up. Despite the criticism, FB is also trending up. Wasn't PITT like last in the overall athletic rankings last year? I think with this success we should be out of the cellar this year?
Yes, possibly, all depends on NCAA championship performances which is where the points come from (except for FBS football which relies on rankings and bowl finishes).
Volleyball is establishing itself as a national powerhouse program. The next step is taking it to the NCAA tourney and making a deep run. Although it has 14 NCAA appearances since 1982, the program has never won more than one match.
Pitt men's soccer is poised to make their first NCAA tourney since 1965. Pitt is currently at 31 in the RPI and is receiving votes in the polls. There is only one regular season game is left, this Friday at RPI 19 Notre Dame, and a win could clinch a bid despite what happens in the ACC tournament. Pitt put itself in their current position in the most dramatic way possible by upsetting undefeated #1 UVA on the road and coming back from a 0-3 deficit to beat Duke in the last two games. Pitt has clinched second in the Coastal behind UVA and can clinch a top 4 seed in the ACC tournament with a tie or win on Friday (which means they get a first round bye and would host at least one game).
The women's soccer team won its first two ACC games since 2015, tied two others, and only dropped one game by more than a goal all season. Very tangible improvement over even just the prior season when they were getting shellacked regularly even though there won't be a post-season for them this year.
Men's swimming & diving has also been ranked this season and is currently just outside the top 25.
Wrestling's pre-season rankings are right around 11 and 12. Pitt wrestling hasn't finished better than 15th at NCAAs since 1989 and hasn't finished in the top 10 since 1970. Pitt is chasing NC State in the ACC. 5 of 6 ACC teams are ranked in the top 25 pre-season polls and it is an improved and very solid conference.
