I read an article today that said that services like Door Dash, etc. have increased sales at some restaurants by 15 to 35%, and have reduced restaurant failure rates by 10 to 20%.

I assume these are popular in Pittsburgh as well as out here in LA, and was wondering what people generally think of them and how frequently you use them.

I never used one until after I had open heart surgery in May 2018. Since then, I have used them frequently. I started out using Grub Hub, but it’s customer service sucked. I switched to Door Dash, occasionally supplemented by Postmates, and have found both very good. The convenience of not having to drive 10 to 30 miles in LA traffic more than makes up for the delivery fee. I have noticed that there is a surcharge on the prices of some items compared to what they charge in the restaurant, but to me it’s minimal compared to the savings in driving time and parking fees.

The other thing I have noticed is that we have tried cuisines and places we probably would not have gotten to in person. Masha loves Thai food, and we probably have sampled half a dozen Thai restaurants we wouldn’t have driven to because of the distance. We probably have tried 3 or 4 Indian restaurants which we also wouldn’t have visited.

I love barbecue, and the area I live in has terrible barbecue. So, we have ordered barbecue from 4 different restaurants each of which is at least a 45 minute drive from our house. All were better than anything local, but so far none has become our go-to place. But, there are still at least half a dozen to try.

One other thing I have noticed is that there are quite a few restaurants on one app which aren’t on the other. That is one big reason we use both. Two of Masha’s favorites are only on Door Dash and two others are only on Postmates.

Are these popular in Western PA? Does anyone on the Board use them regularly?

It seems like every 3rd customer here in Bloomfield is one of these. I like it because I think it shortens lines. They hostess sees the driver coming, hands him a bag with a few orders and he's off. Less than 20 seconds. Those orders were people that would've been seated in front of me or would've been in front of me in line.

It's great for older folks and families with little kids.

How many times have you had a pizza delivered to your house?
Not the same. Delivery driver is an employee of restaurant, a direct employee on the company payroll, not a 3rd party contractor thru an app with zero accountability.

Shame on our society that such a service/industry exists and prospers. I hear stories of food being eaten or worse by these people, I laugh my ass off. I literally laugh out loud and feel a weird sense of justification.

LOL - you are bashing people for not picking up their food. You contradict yourself.

I always pick up my own grub. Hate when it shows up cold, get there early get it hot and cruise home. But I live in the sticks can be to most places in less than ten minutes

I get your point, but pizza delivery is the same as any other food delivery. It is literally food delivery.

However, if it makes you feel superior to think it isn’t, well, you can convince yourself of anything.

Someone is a bit salty since the service isn’t available in his area
Lol. I am salty on this and couldn’t tell you why. Not sure if it’s available in south hills or not.

Get out of the house folks, support the server/bartender industry. Nothing wrong with leaving the couch on occasion.

We have not used this service yet. We still enjoy going out to dinner when not cooking ourselves. We have been on a healthy food kick for some time now so we buy our own raw ingredients carefully and cook ourselves. Hope all is well after the surgery!!

What is sad......is the local restaurants in my section of the world aren't worth it. If I could get an express line from my house to Squirrel Hill or Lawrenceville, yeah. But I rather eat out. Like Zelda said, "interaction with people is good", but also food, especially some food, just loses alot when it is packed in some styrofoam or plastic container, and it steams itself, anything crisp loses it, other things get mushy. I mean some things are made for delivery, but even a Pizza I am more apt to pick up than have delivered. Cause I can control the amount of time it is in transit.

I’ve only used those apps when they offered some big discount (probably for being a first time user), hate all the fees.

I try to cook as much as I can, generally saves money and can be healthier depending on what you use. But hell when I was in college and not far removed I’d be getting food out constantly, still do usually like once a week or so. Like to go to places around me that are on rewards apps where you get a credit for spending so much there.

Do you do all your shopping in stores and malls? For the social interaction?

Do you abhor Amazon?

People are F’in lazy. Pay someone to pick up your takeout. F U all.

I hope the crack head picking up your food eats your fries and finishes on your burger. You deserve it. Losers.
That crack head must have pissed in your corn flakes.

crack heads urinated in my cereal? If i ate cornflakes, i'd make it myself, i don't need an app to have "johnny track marks" pick it up and deliver it to my house cause i don't like going outside.

"Lazy sons of bitches... pick up your damn feet if you need to get somewhere. It'll do ya some good!"

- Some disgruntled Pitt fan in the town tavern, circa 1908, upon hearing about the Model T

Let's be honest: Regardless of whether you pick it up yourself to-go, eat in, or have it delivered, your food is probably passing through too many underpaid workers who don't give a damn to ever ensure its complete cleanliness.
There is at least some accountability if it’s coming from an actual employee (delivery driver) compared to some 3rd party guy who picks up jobs on an app.

Again, knock yourselves out, it’s not me eating some guys spunk.

Honestly, it won't be long before people are seeking that out in their food and claiming it has some weird health benefit. Once they started transferring "healthy feces" into other people's colons, I've pretty much accepted that nothing is off the table.

"Ok, so you want one medium stuffed crust pizza. Will that be with or without the special splash?"

It'll probably be the new guacamole at Chipotle someday. "Look, I know it costs extra; just put it on my damn food."

No one lives in the South Hills....too crowded.

Fecal transplantation is medically proven to be beneficial-
Ya understand due to heavy antibiotics or Chemotherapy- when people have eliminated their normal healthy gut flora-
The bacteria we all have for digestion-

Their alternative is a lifetime of diarrhea and the electrolyte imbalances- which are dangerous.

Or
Reintroducing new normal and healthy gut flora to correct the condition permanently?

Don’t be stupid

Lol, you're a moron.

You seemed proudly misinformed.
Happy to inform you

I stated that it has a health benefit. So your entire comment is off-base from the onset. Literally nowhere did I say it was being done just for fun. Further, if you can't ascertain that it was mentioned in partial jest, then you must have zero social skills.

But you'll have to find your internet bickering partner elsewhere, as I am in no mood to entertain such crotchety stupidity, ya narcissist.

That was easy

Convenience is convenience.

I can pop up an app- places and order on the way to picking up the kid from school- and have it delivered when we get home .
yeah, i know. i really don't know why it bothers me. i feel same way about curb side grocery pick up services too yet i dislike going to grocery store myself..

i really am a non stop contradiction. i hate leaving my house but im lecturing yinz all to get off the couch. i knock online delivery but like amazon cause i don't want to see you weirdo people at the mall in December.

i tell y'all to live and let live but here i am, telling you to live how i want you to live. my opinions are all over the damn place..

i don't think it would bother you at all if people were generally fit
