OT: Spotlight PA: UPMC’s claim of ‘less severe’ coronavirus strain in PA is not supported by science

Wouldn’t UPMC be considered science?

I’m not saying I agree with UPMC. But my issue with the expression “supported by science” is that it too often means “the science that supports my political opinion.”
No
Science is science
Upmc rep made a bold claim -
Was asked for source info
The source was checked and didn’t necessarily support the original claim
That’s actually the scientific method in action

I’ll always be suspicious of health systems who profit from People Being sick down playing risks
It’s an inherent agency problem

More interesting than the controversy cited is whether most new cases will, or will not, lead to a large spike in deaths.

Common sense and history since about February suggest that since the vast majority of new cases appear to be among young people that there’re won’t follow a large spike in deaths like there was when nursing homes and old age facilities were hit earlier this year. It will probably only be a relatively small spike in deaths and mostly from among younger people who, despite being young, have underlying health issues.

We will have to wait for time to give that answer definitively in either direction.

When people say "supported by science" do they actually mean by "scientific research"?

If a vaccine is produced then it's less deadly. It we have protected the elderly in assisted living where a majority of fatality cases arise then it is less deadly. All I have been seeing is younger patients with mild symptoms. I have not seen any older severe illness in over a month. I saw one patient two days ago w/ moderate symptoms. Take a step back at number of cases and patients placed in obs. Trend the ICU cases and fatalities. These two are the true measure of how we should look at the severity of the disease today.

Do you practice in Pittsburgh?

quite a broad range of positive test percentages. 22 clinics reported 100% positive. Many clinics says the reports don’t match the reality. How can this happen?

I don't think you get what I am saying. There are the pundits on T.V. who are far left and right with an agenda. I can only tell you what I see with my own eyes on the 6th floor of presby and clinic. I am not presenting a scientific study or regurgitating articles.

I don't really trust the news anyways. There once was a young patient that died at Presby. I have to be vague for HIPPA. The reason he died became a political football and there was legislation signed into law with this patients case presented as evidence for why something needed to be done. I followed this patient on service. The news said he died from a substance and the law banned the substance. The real reason he died was he used a pez dispenser as a smoking device causing him to inhale plastic into his lungs. This is one of many cases when reality and the news are different. I have sadly seen this many times.

I am not saying Coronavirus is fake. It is a respiratory disease that can cause fatality in certain populations. All I can say is what I see with the 20-40 people I send for testing daily. Early on I did see some older folks that presented w/ moderate to severe disease. Over the last 4 weeks its all been mild sore throat, runny nose, loose stools, body aches and fatigue. The majority body aches and fatigue. I had one patient a few days ago that reminded me of how it was at the beginning. Most people are just really scared. Maybe it's going to change. I'm not in the prediction business. We will see

Word. Corporate media cannot be trusted in this country. I was just curious if you practiced in Pittsburgh - to understand your claims a little better.

I can predict this outcome. I do know that every October our primary cares, ERs and urgent cares are filled with kids presenting with sniffles, sore throat and cough after putting them back into the classrooms. If this school mitigation plan does not reduce the common seasonal viruses we see yearly then every sniffle, sore throat and cough is going to shut down segments of school. If a family has kids in 1,3,5 and 8th grade then potentially half the grade school could be placed in quarantine over the concerns of 1 child. Wait until the flu shows up. This is going to get crazy.

what I find amazing about UPMC senior care is zero cases and zero fatalities. I saw the email on that about a month ago. I'm not sure if that changed. Barnabas and Beaver took a beating. Places like Marian Manor did not report any issues. I think the lesson learned will be to put these places on lockdown immediately when there is a sniff of a global pandemic. They all now have controls in place to protect their patients

Lag
It’s a simple explanation
There is a 5-7 day lag for results , another lag for compiling local results to the state
It’s why .
Ya understand there isn’t an infrastructure to simply collect real time data , right ?

There is an infrastructure to collect data. It's just a poorly constructed infrastructure fraught with poor process management. One would expect Florida to be a hotspot because people from North America travel there to enjoy the summer. Wait until people from all over the world travel and convene on college campuses. English 101 with 500 students will quickly become a cluster.
