I traveled for a living for 20 years . Oh yes I know what you're saying .Classy guy. You have no idea how bad the sportstalk is in some cities. Savran is great.
I remember in the 80's as a young parent who held 2 jobs .Yeah Stan is an institution. And a throwback when radio hosts were actually respectful to their callers. Good man, wish him the best.
He was and is PGH media. Hate everything about PGH teams. To your point I don’t wish ill upon anyoneI couldn't get past the pay wall, but the headline indicated he's suffering from lung cancer. I never cared for him (as soon as he got to town, he began ridiculing one of my favorite Pirates, and he didn't let up until the guy got traded), but I hate to see that happen to anyone (I just lost an uncle to lung cancer).

When I was young out of college before I found my true profession, I was in his house selling a service to his wife at the time. She was a very attractive woman and another attractive woman was with her who I thought was her sister as they looked alike. Anyway, I told her that her husband was a Pittsburgh icon. I felt that way even then and that was the mid 90’s. She seemed surprised to hear that. Anyway, nothing against Stan because he seems like a great guy, but this woman didn’t seem his type and I thought she was way out of his league. Lol. I wasn’t surprised years later to hear he was divorced.I remember in the 80's as a young parent who held 2 jobs .
I cleaned offices at night over on the Ardmore right near the WTAE studios .
I had my little transistor radio and would listen to Myron from 6 til 8 then Stan had a show right after . I always respected Stan as a true professional that relied on his knowledge and not some schtick like most on the radio these days .. God speed Stan ...
Let me guess .. Dave Parker ...I never cared for him (as soon as he got to town, he began ridiculing one of my favorite Pirates, and he didn't let up until the guy got traded)
No, and as I recall, Parker left via free agency.Let me guess .. Dave Parker ...
Mario Mendoza ? Lol . 😁No, and as I recall, Parker left via free agency.
Maybe your favorite Pirate deserved it?I couldn't get past the pay wall, but the headline indicated he's suffering from lung cancer. Shill is a little harsh wouldn't you say ?I wish the guy no ill will. But he was a shill to Paterno and Penn St. for a long time. He got into a big fight with Conomikes and disliked Pitt.
Shill is rather accurate. He worked Penn St football games with George Paterno, and it started in the 80’s when we were heated rivals. The University of Pittsburgh is the hometown team and should be treated as such.Shill is a little harsh wouldn't you say ?
To me he was always objective and let's face it Pitt had nothing to shout about in more years than PU .
Being from Cleveland , I'm sure the bottom line was the Benjamins .. IMO ...Shill is rather accurate. He worked Penn St football games with George Paterno, and it started in the 80’s when we were heated rivals. The University of Pittsburgh is the hometown team and should be treated as such.
Yeah I forgot about that .. A bit off the wall but still.. I do remember now .What I was amazed at with Stan was that he was a tennis fan and would actually talk about Men’s tennis. At least back in the 80s. I never thought I would hear that on sports talk radio.
Stan and Myron were the best. The hacks that populate the Pittsburgh sports media today could learn a lesson in sports journalism if they would research those two guys. There was no schtick, just solid reporting and commentary.
Also, back then they actually took calls from listeners and addressed the concerns and views of the audience.
Today, shows like 93.7 The Commercial take very little input from the fans. Maybe 1 or 2 calls per hour. Instead, the brain dead, arrogant blowhards just belch their vitriol and criticism to make a name for themselves. It was entertaining and sometimes educational to tune in to WTAE on weekday evenings. Today it is a waste of time. I stopped listening to 93.7 The Commercial, several years ago for those reasons.
He goes to the Open every year. That’s kinda cool. For me, I haven’t followed tennis since the early 90’s when Agassi, Sampras, Chang, and Courier dominated the tour. What I was amazed at with Stan was that he was a tennis fan and would actually talk about Men’s tennis. At least back in the 80s. I never thought I would hear that on sports talk radio.
Well yes and no. He was always tolerant and patient with callers even though there were some pretty bad ones. But sometimes he couldn’t deal. Case in point. When we were in college, we called sportsbeat and pranked him (because that’s what college kids do). We said “Stan love the show. We have a trade proposition for you and want your thoughts. We propose:He was always respectful to his callers
I had an uncle who died a horrible death from smoking. His son, my cousin, smokes to this day, and is starting to have issues from it.When I was young out of college before I found my true profession, I was in his house selling a service to his wife at the time. These people who cover sports claim that it’s their job and they have no bias. But I can tell you that Stans man cave had plenty of penguins paraphernalia.
additionally when I heard cancer, my first thought was lung cancer as he has decades of cigarette smoking in those lungs.
That's fantastic!Well yes and no. We propose:
Pens trade Mario Lemieux, a 12th round pick and $500 to the Rangers for Mike Richter, an 11th round pick, and $500.
the look on his face as he was listening to the trade deal being proposed went from a smile and respect to anger. He yelled that we can take the trade deal out to the dumpster because that’s where it belongs. It was one of the only times I saw Stan agitated.
then why post anything in regards to his bad circumstances here?...the old "if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all" axiom used to be applied in much greater fashion in times past when someone died or faced death...I couldn't get past the pay wall, but the headline indicated he's suffering from lung cancer. I never cared for him (as soon as he got to town, he began ridiculing one of my favorite Pirates, and he didn't let up until the guy got traded), but I hate to see that happen to anyone (I just lost an uncle to lung cancer).
Whatever anyone thinks of Stan or Guy, Sportsbeat was a great show. Living in the hinterlands of the Johnstown area it was my main go to source for keeping tabs on Western Pa sports. I really missed it when it went off the air and can’t believe they never came up with something to replace it.
Professionalism ....
sportsbeat was a good show. the problem is that the local sports media here in pittsburgh hasnt evolved from this format. start show and rely on callers to ask questions and give them short answers shouldnt be 98% of the content yet here we are 30 years later and still do the same thing.Whatever anyone thinks of Stan or Guy, Sportsbeat was a great show. I am not sure what is LESS interesting on sports talk? Callers or Athletes? Callers, unless they are really out there, are boring. The only interesting ones are the really idiots. And that is just to poke fun of. But athletes, with their mumbled cliches are the worst. Rarely is one interesting. I would rather hear writers, media covering teams or athletes/coaches that go into media.sportsbeat was a good show. the problem is that the local sports media here in pittsburgh hasnt evolved from this format. start show and rely on callers to ask questions and give them short answers shouldnt be 98% of the content yet here we are 30 years later and still do the same thing.
we rag on Madden and deservedly so but he's one of the very few who can carry a show on his own, without having call ins to carry him.
who was the player?I couldn't get past the pay wall, but the headline indicated he's suffering from lung cancer.
