OT: travel ban??

So for those of you that know the NBA rules so well, this is a serious question -- say the refs blew this whistle at half court by calling a reach in foul on #15 in blue ... because of continuation, that's an "and one," right?
Great question.

You don’t get two steps after your last dribble. You get two steps after you’ve officially “gathered”. You can see LeBron delays actually catching his dribble for the slightest moment to gather so that he took two long steps for the dunk.

It’s not a travel. Just because they’d call it that in youth leagues at the YMCA or in a WPIAL game doesn’t make it one.

What about the pass to himself which was actually his last dribble... the one where he took 3 steps in between the dribble? Apparently 3 steps in between dribbles became legal at some point.

He likely traveled on the inbound as well.

Apparently that extra step us legal to "gather the ball." 1 step to gather, then 2 more steps. Only league in the world where you are allowed 3 steps

He took 3 steps during his second dribble and then another 2 during the act of shooting (5 steps during 1 dribble and a shot). He only had to gather the ball because he basically passed it through the two guys to himself. Assume passing to yourself is legal now.

The pass to himself can be considered a dribble though so I'm not that worried about that one. What is ridiculous is how the NBA apparently allows you an extra step to gather the ball, like the guys arent already offensively gifted enough. No human should be allowed to stop dribbling at halfcourt.

You’re really getting bent out of shape over one meaningless play.

Exactly my point early yesterday about soccer. One play does not define a sport. But people will use it as a way to back up and support their own preconceived opinion. Kinda like how Poker is using the Craig Meyer article to support his own views on Capel.

The last time the ball hit the floor was inside the midcourt logo, about 6 feet inside of midcourt. I'm sorry but James did not cover 40 feet with no dribbles without traveling.

The front-end of the play looks like a travel. The backend, wasn't.

It’s not just this 1 play.
Yes, poker is an Idiot.. but nobody needs the Meyer Article to know that Jeff Capel is a Mediocre basketball coach. Just look at his career. Facts are Facts. His last 4 years he has finished in Last place in conference 3x and next to last the other.. This season he is in 11th place in a watered down ACC and in the midst of another end of season tank job.. the guy sat on the bench as an Asst for 7 years for the same reason, he’s not a good coach.. To make matters worse, he has assembled a Staff that matches his inept Coaching resume, recipe for what you currently see on the Floor—- Mediocre Product

Sorry. I just can’t go there. If we went off of cherry picked stats from a decade ago...Jamie Dixon would still be a great Coach. But that ship sailed several years ago. Times change, things change, and we need a bit more more patience.

If only PItt's running backs could move the ball like this!

In HS, I loved professional basketball. Every Sunday, Philly 76'ers vs. Boston Celtics. Russell vs. Chamberlain, Cunningham vs. Havlicek.

Then, LA Lakers with West and Wilt, Baylor and Goodrich vs. Nicks with Reed and Frazier and Monroe and Bradley.

Another period when Magic and Bird and Jordan made it interesting.

Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, the last gasp for me.
Too much freelancing now for me. It has become a video game to me.

I can't find it right now, but there's a good video making its way around NBA instagram of a guy humorously narrating clips of Jordan scoring at will against absolutely atrocious and lackadaisical 1990s NBA defense. I think people tend to view the version of the sport they grew up watching through rose colored glasses.

The average scoring in the 80s is roughly the same as it is today. Did teams in the 80s not play defense?

Your unbelievably stupid to think that's not a travel. He took minimum 2 1/2 steps more like 3.

I believe Ski is correct about the scoring. I'm guessing maybe more shot attempts now and 3 pointers but really didn't research either to see if there is a why
