OT - venting on McCutchen

Despite what all these people think, I love the buccos and all my Burgh sports. FWIW I do hope he bounces back next season and they can keep him around, but if not, maybe they get some return on him, if he hits like Cutch again.

At this point, I believe the best they can do is hope for some kind of a bounce back. I think an extension is out the window.

They're hesitant to extend any old guy beyond a couple years at this point, and unfortunately Cutch is showing signs of aging (K's are increasing, defensive range is decreasing, power is declining, etc.). He's not looking like a guy who might age super gracefully, which is unfortunate.

Those guys are exceedingly rare, though, and my theory is they tend to be corner OF and 3B type. Up the middle guys are too reliant on speed and 1B tend to be large frames and power-heavy.

Terrible fundamentals. Weak arm and often throws to the wrong base. Great speed but doesn't have the baseball sense needed to steal a base. I can understand a bad year at the plate but his overall game is dismal. He seems to be very lackadaisical in all aspects of his game that has rubbed off Marte and Polanco. He is no where close to being a player like Trout, Posey, Or Rizzo.
The basic premise of the initial thread was to point out McCutchen's poor attitude and lack of fundamental skills. Watching Glasnow give up five stolen bases in three innings further proved The point that our players are not taught fundamentals in our minor-league system. My God, how about holding the runner on base? He is been in our system four years and has no clue how to do this. Mccutcheon can hit the cut off man. He can't steal a base. Hurdle lets everyone get away with this nonsense. Watch the Cardinals play fundamental baseball. That's why they win championships. It's certainly hasn't happened here. The inmates are running the team.

I've heard some people opine that he hasn't been the same player since he "tied the knot".

Is there a connection? Who knows, but stranger things have happened. We're still trying to figure-out what happened to the pitching career of Steve Blass....
he batted .292 with 96 RBIs his honeymoon year. So out goes that theory. Now as far as Steve Blass goes, and along those lines. the rumor I have heard is that Dave Cash was banging his wife at the time of his collapse.

This whole thread is funny in that somehow (as deemed by the esteemed baseball geniuses in this forum) a guy with those numbers last year is old and over the hill at age 29 because he had a bad first half....with fans like this, who needs opposition.

He's in the middle of a lineup, which has been the case for years, surrounded by dink hitters who can't hit their way out of a paper bag. He's been pitched around, he's tried to become a power hitter when he's not , and he's developed some bad habits. It's a miracle his stats have been as good as they have been the last several years.

FWIW, the "honeymoon" year is a breeze...it's what follows that's more *ahem* interesting.

As far as Blass goes, the weird rumor that I heard didn't involve Cash, it involved another player whom I won't name - since he's still around.

I heard a good rumor a year or two ago that many sanguillen was asked to talk to Marte, tell him to settle down because he was banging everything out there. Thought that was funny.. The rumor came from someone that is very close to the situation (in more ways than one) but also a compulsive liar so not sure to believe it or not..

Seeing as there is so much time to fill during a baseball broadcast with idle chit chat and stories of old maybe Blass can settle, once and for all, who was actually banging his wife. "Reminds me of a time back at the Hilton we stayed at near old Shea Stadium. Ball outside to Jayhey. Now back then wives could go on two road trips a year. Foul tip, count goes to 2 and 1. I was walking back to my room and heard the darndest noise coming from it....and that is why I could not throw a strike to save my life after that. Hahahaha! good times, good times"
