Looking to purchase a pair for our farmhouse. Water efficiency is critical as we have tank water and in drought it can be affected. So I think that puts front loaders high on the list.
Any suggestions on brands that are good or brands to avoid?
It will just two of us most times, so it won't be heavy duty or high use.

Thanks in advance to Pantherlair Consumer Reports.

We bought an LG 5 CU FT HE smart top load washer last year. Love it.
Model #WT7300CW. Took us several weeks to get it delivered.

Hanging on to our dryer until it breaks.

I think you will definitely want a High Efficiency (HE) machine. Just get HE detergent to go with it.

I have this one, a front loading HE with energy star certification. I would highly recommend, but I can't comment on the matching dryer since have a different one.

I should add that I got this one two years ago, so there is probably a new model available.

We bought high end ones for our vacation house and the electonics fried in a couple of weeks. Be sure to buy an extended warranty or get one with a great warranty. Costco took ours back no questions asked.

As the resident dinosaur, I prefer solid state. I don't need wifi enabled washers and dryers . Just more shit to go wrong.

I agree with you on the fancy smancy features. I don't need 87 different wash cycles. For us the water efficiency is the prime concern. The water off the roof is free, but there is no municipal supply if it goes dry. There is a well, but only connected to provide water to the stock animals. It doesn't connect to the house.

LG is high end, Samsung is junk. I bought GE middle of the road a couple years ago. Same with my new kitchen appliances 7 years ago.

No problems with any of them. Washer and dryer were not too expensive. Quick Wash cycle uses less water.

Forget extended warranties. They are designed to make money for the outlet. They will most likely expire before you need them.

The first photo is the bathroom, silly.

I was channel surfing the other night and there was a show on history channel about household appliances. They showed a woman pre-appliance days with a tub and washboard. I told my wife that was an idea. I got a Wendy Byrd from Ozark look, and ended up sleeping on the couch.

D
LG are the best. They rate #1 in all reviews. Both top load and front load.
Did a ton of research on this last year and ultimately settled on LG high capacity frontloaders for our family of 4. So far so good about 9 months in. Big upgrade over the old whirlpool front loaders these replaced.

Go to lowes or home depot and ask for the scratched or dented ones that's if they're not visible where you'll be placing them. Always went this route and saved $$$. Sometimes you have to direct wire if you know how to do that.

She didn’t realize that you were going to operate them.

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Not Samsung
We have Samsung units, and our washer has required maintenance twice in three years. Fortunately, we bought the extended warranty thru the store (Don’s Appliances) and not the factory, and we’re glad that we did. They quickly covered the repairs, no questions asked.

Right now, LG is rated high, so if I was buying, I’d probably go in that direction.

I don’t know whether the appliance models with the “bells & whistles” use better parts than cheaper models. I think that would be a good question to ask someone who’s knowledgeable on the subject.

Agreed on Whirlpool. Have a new Whirlpool dryer for about 6 months, it rattles alarmingly with occasional squeals as well. Didn’t happen for the first couple of months or i would have sought to return it. It dries ok (so far) but the noise is disconcerting. I wouldn’t buy it again.

My opinion is to avoid Samsung on anything outside of phones. Bought a house with newer Samsung kitchen appliances and they are slowly dying one by one. Had Samsung washer/dryer at my last house, bought in 2012. Washer would clog often and the dryer would run forever to get anything beyond small loads dry. Both eventually died by 2021.

I'd suggest a top he loading washer where possible. I've had issues with moisture/mildew with the seals on front loading washers I've owned.

Wash your clothes in the damn creek on a rock and dry them on a clothes line lazy!

uh sorry, delivering and installing appliances was my high school job and I still hate it 40 years later...you have not seen the gates of Hell (not to mention exposed butt cracks) until you are hauling out an old 4,500 pound 1958 Norge refrigerator down three flights of narrow steps...

I tell my 20 something niece that
Using wind and solar to dry, imagine that.
My 20 something niece thinks her generation invented conservation. She wanted me to get her a compost container for Christmas, two years ago. She seemed disappointed when I hold her that her grandfather used to compost, and that she would have had something in common with him.

Can’t go wrong with a clothes line.

Can’t believe nobody mentioned Speed Queen. Maybe the only manufacturer still producing units in the US.

That's what we have. It's a simple work horse of a washing machine. And from what I've read/heard, it's easy to fix....not that I've had any problems with it in the 5-6 years we've had it.

That's what I have - works fine. The only criticism I have is the spin cycle is really loud. I have an older model so they may have fixed that issue. But LG is solid!

Another tidbit, maybe not specifically relevant to the OP but more general… if interested in certain brands it can pay to learn about what brands might own and make machines branded differently.

For example if you just want a basic W/D on a budget, you might see that Whirlpool or Maytag models are priced rather high, but you can often find equivalents of many of their machines marketed under the Amana brand (other sub brands as well) and often for significantly less.

Alternately if you had bad reliability or customer service from Whirlpool and want to avoid the parent company it’s good to know these deets as well.

Often several models of different brands will have many of the same working mechanisms, but some may lack some of the glitzier interfaces or finishes of the premium brands, etc.
This link looks about 2 years old so buyer beware, but a useful breakdown…

Personally, I'd go for LG. According to the https://musiccityappliance.services/ statistics, LG machines suffer less breakings. My brother works as an appliance repair specialist there, and he says that Samsung washing machines break all the time. That's why I'd highly recommend you buy an LG one. Anyway, keep us updated on your choice. Btw, I totally agree with CaptainMurphy. Almost all Samsung products suck except phones. I don't know. Maybe the company is cursed, who knows. Sad, but true. So, I'll be waiting for your reply, man. Keep us updated.

We got a Haier front load washer and a Midea vented dryer. They reside in a laundry room distant from the main living areas so noise isn't a problem. The Haier was reasonably priced and the best on water efficiency, so we went with that. Vented dryers are way cheaper. And I got to cut a hole in the wall, which is always fun.
So far so good.

We just purchased Maytag top load washer and matching dryer. So far, been pretty happy with the performance. FYI - we also know a few of our friends who recently purchased washer/dryer combos. Several of our friends who purchased front loaders had issues with either water leakage or mold. One problem they were discussing was that it was very difficult to clean the gaskets thoroughly enough to keep mold from forming. Anyway, that's just what I've heard FWIW.

Cruzer

Just bought a GE as we wanted more knobs than buttons/computer controls. LG was top rated but was told by several hard to get parts for them.

Don't know if you're a Costco member, but they are discounting many of their washer/dryer sets right now. They do free delivery and in-home install (included in the price of the appliances), and add an additional year to the warranty. Prices were better, too. I just bought a Maytag pair for a new house
