OT: Wrestling - these guys are having fun

Dom, the guy on the right is a great kid. I’ve known him since he was very young. Concert pianist also. Very bright.
Are we still losing our mind over the coaching hire for wrestling or has that been proven wrong yet?

Having fun is one thing winning is another. Kids have fun in daycare too.
Recruiting seems to be a positive, thats good, so if the new coach is on the right track positive results will roll in but it will take some time to rebuild.
The team is 1-3 ? So the jury is still out on how much and when the program will improve.
We're hoping for a big change on the positive side since we're avid wrestling fans. We live in a wrestling "hotbed" the Lehigh Valley and attend alot of HS and Lehigh matches. Both kids wrestled for one of the better teams in PA and one kid was on a PA State Championship team.
We attended the last Lehigh match in the "old" Grace Hall before it was renovated around 2003?
Lehigh does great things for local HS wrestling including summer camps, multi day training sessions, inviting HS teams and families to attend the Lehigh matches free, etc something Pitt should do more of. Penn St has similar programs.
Lehigh would sponsor a HS match prior to the Lehigh match in Grace Hall on a frequent basis, with local TV coverage. Our kids both benefited from that and the HS kids loved it.
Mrs Buffett and I will be at the Pitt Bucknell match in Lewisburg, NC St, Okalahoma matches in Pittsburgh and the Pitt vs Lehigh match in Bethlehem proudly wearing our Pitt stuff.

Hopefully they start having a little more fun on the mat as well. For a team ranked in the Top 25 to start the season, they have had very little success in the majority of their weight classes. The last match against WVU was an abomination.
Performances against ranked Wisconsin and Ariz St weren't very good either.
Of course you have to recruit and have the wrestlers but alot of wrestling team success comes from the coaches getting the most out of each wrestler and not wasting talent.
Top wrestlers have to win, pin and max out bonus pts, while other wrestlers not expected to win have to learn how to finish bouts without giving up 6 pts for a pin, 5 pts for a tech fall, or 4 pts for a major decision and once in a while score an upset.
In fact we has a local Lehigh Valley team which won last years PA State Championship beating a team that they lost to earlier in the year. Their great coach said the reason they won was the top guys did their job and the other wrestlers expected to lose gave up regular decision pts ( 3 ) not bonus points! He gets the most out of his wrestlers.
It's a complicated and tough sport! One on one you can't beat that!
