feuding with DK on twitter. Interesting. Wasn't a huge fan of Hiles, especially after the blue vase thing. He does seem to like to stir the pot.

for what??
Hiles reposted where some dude did a deep dive on the whole "Nutting was a couple million in the red last year to operate the Pirates" BS that Dejan was peddling a few weeks back. He basically called Dejan out for being a Pirate shill so they were going back and forth at each other.

Not much doubt that DK does in fact reside in Nutting's back pocket. Hiles' proclaiming it is not exactly a fresh point of view.

DK took what he saw and reported it at face value without thinking about it. Maybe he can do a deep dive into how Pitt's athletic department breaks even every year.
Again, He bought the team for ~$290 million and it is valued at $1.3 billion. He's not losing anything. If so, sell and collect your billion dollar profit and move on. DK is a ****.

DK is the worst beat writer in Pittsburgh and it aint close
feel like "beat" writers are outdated and not even relevant in today's sports media world. it made sense back when there was one or two major newspapers. the gazette and the trib, or whatever. but now that newspapers hardly exist anymore and subscriptions are behind a pay wall and there are countless other websites both local and national to cover a sports team, that it made being a "beat" writer outdated..

ask yourself this, do you as a fan of a team, get any better or more inside info than the official beat writer that you dont get from other media members? either local or national? Lets talk about the steelers? when is the last time a Steeler "beat writer" broke a story first before a national guy?? can you honestly say brian freakin batko ever broke a story once? or chris adamsky or whoever it is for the trib?

Back before social media, twitter, the "beat writer" relationship meant something. now? not so much.

Hiles and Stumpf break far more pirates news than the national guys imo. They are good. The pens news is 50/50, and yea most nfl stuff is National

DK and the sports beat in PIT is light years ahead of Vegas. It's quite maddening to me.

Totally disagree. Mitch and Pauly are way better than anything in Pittsburgh. Steve Cofield as well.

The majority of those shows are about going out, dating, and other assorted “me” items. Very little actual sports and when they talk sports, it’s only about gambling. You can have it.

This and only this.

Now, it's a bit early to say this definitively but a lot of the "controversy" surrounding the club and a notion that they're losing money can serve a purpose. Remember, Art Modell made himself into a hated pariah before he saw no choice but to move to Baltimore.

He might be losing money on paper so that he can justify his lack of spending and dupe dolts in the media, but there is no way that cheap jabroni is going to own an MLB team and being losing out in reality.

Their shows are tailored to who the audience is. So many people here are originally from somewhere else and their sports allegiance still belongs to their hometown teams, so having guys on talking mainly about local Las Vegas teams isn’t going to work.

I can also say that nothing sounds more annoying to me than having to listen to local rah rah guys that know a lot less about sports than I do, I can go sit in any sports book in town if I want to hear that.

Are the Pirates losing money on paper? They certainly could be. Accountants are pretty creative people. But are they actually losing money, as in they are spending more money to run the team than they are bring in in revenues over the course of a year? No. No way. If they are they are dumber than the most incompetent business owner in history.

But the Pirates give a dope in the local media their accountant's version of things, and that dope isn't smart enough to realize that he's being played. Shocking!

I can really see Nutting selling at some point but not necessarily staying in town.

yeah, they build a few kids baseball fields with a locker room in the dominican republic and Nutting tells everyone that they are investing all their money in other ways than the payroll.

It is amazing, simply amazing, that they continue to spend all their money in ways that no one can see and no one can quantify instead of spending it on the one thing that would be easy to see and easy to verify.

And oh, yeah, the one thing that would also give them a better chance of winning.

Hold on... you are talking about a guy who doubled-down on his failing newspaper business and continued to buy up small town papers up until a few years ago. He might very well be the dumbest business owner in history. Don't forget, it was his old man who loaned the money to McClatchey which ended up leading to majority ownership of the Pirates. He basically inherited the Pirates.

Dejan is a putz.

Forbes has a different view, published this past March of 2025. From their list of most valuable MLB teams:

#26. $1.35 billion

Pittsburgh Pirates

One-Year Change: 2% | Operating Income: $47 million | Owner: Nutting family

It’s also a way to not pay any taxes .
