I actually gained some appreciation for Pastner as a coach over his time in the ACC even though his overall body of work doesn’t look great. Georgia Tech does seem like a place that legitimately is limiting in the type of player you can bring in, but he coached as hard as anyone in-game with his various defenses. I’m sure he will land at a mid-major and be one of those guys who will be around coaching for 20 more years.

Ja'von Franklin is going to be a very hot name in the portal. He could fix a ton of issues at Pitt, especially our rebounding.

@Vader_Storm How much eligibility does Franklin have left? He’s sure been around the block. First JC. Then GT being his 3rd D-1 college program.

Is he allowed to transfer without sitting?

*I have no idea how things work because of the covid-year.

I thought he had 1 year. Now Im not sure because of the redshirt situation and covid situation. He might need a waiver to come back. Apparently he might have burned a redshirt after playing 1 game in community college after a season ending injury which I didn't know about.

Thought I used to be pretty decent at determining remaining eligibility. But with COVID year, exceptions, waivers, etc., it’s become tough for me to tell.

But if Franklin does have more eligibility and is able to play in college next year without sitting out, agree he’d at least be worth a look from Pitt. He plays hard. Tough on the glass and as a defender.

GT players have to pass calculus (albeit a watered-down version if they're majoring in something non-mathematical). We like to make up academic restrictions that Pitt has to deal with... but GT actually has them. They're one of the few.

They don't have to pass it to play, they have to take it and would need to pass to graduate, which is one reason their graduation rate has been lower than you'd expect at a good school.

Tech is a good school. Excellent opportunity to play P6 hoops and get a great education. Much the same as Pitt offers. Ja’Von Franklin, for example, played at Holmes C.C., Auburn and South Alabama prior to playing for GT. Despite that varied and much travelled college background, he was able to do it and be eligible to play for them.

They can find good players who can handle their academic requirements. They’ve had quite a bit of success in hoops. Won the ACCT championship as recently as 2021.

Living in GA I can tell you they have a lot in common.
Certainly location-wise as far as being in an urban environment, they are similar. When we were in Atlanta for the Peach Bowl last season, we took a couple mile walk to the Tech campus from our hotel located in downtown Atlanta not far from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

So definitely similar to Pitt in terms of being an urban campus not too far from the downtown area.
