Per Peak..Pitt tried hard to retain Canada

Some guy last night said we upped to near one mil a year. Canada definitely took his time deciding, it wasnt a slam dunk.

Early reports are LSU 3 years at 'more than 1 mil' a year.
They nearly tripled wisc DC Aranda's salary to get him (1.3). Just signed him again to 1.8+m a year.

No blame whatsoever for the admin on this. It was a perfect storm. Pitt could never go toe to toe with the likes of LSU for a football coach.

And as Pitt fans, we should be immune to this kind of thing.

it will be interesting to see how Canada does down on the bayou. They have a ton of skill talent and a really good O line. QB has always been seen as their weakness, but I have a feeling Canada will turn it into a strength with the same personnel.

Unless he had strong ties to this area this was a no brainer. Get more money and play for a fan base that fills the seats regardless of the opponent and an atmosphere that few other places can match. No one can blame him but he could have stayed here and brought us 9-3 and 10-2 seasons and had complete job security and turned that into a HC opportunity. Go there and go 9-3 or 8-4 and finish second or third in that division and he'll be gone in 3 years. If he gets a decent QB or more out of the QB's that are there currently LSU can compete with anyone in the SEC. I wish him nothing but good will he brought us one of the most exciting Pitt seasons in many years at least on the offensive side of the ball. No matter who we get all they need to do is watch film to incorporate some of these plays into whatever playbook they bring in with them. Its not like its 1950 when the playbook was a big secret. Whoever we get as long as they call plays and run an offense suited to our personnel we'll be okay. Its a setback but its not the end of the world.

I heard we went a million, and there aren't 10 OC in the country that make that.

Kudos to the admin.....stepped up, but walked away at the right point. You potentially have other issues if you start going crazy with jt

I think everyone should be happy with their efforts. They did what they could but I gotta wonder if at some point they thought of narduzzi. They can't go crazy with money because if someone comes calling for him, maybe they're ready to match any price and then some.

Recruiting takes a much bigger hit when you're changing head coaches than offensive coordinators. We've witnessed it a few times here.

-Said all along Canada is a good coach that has much to prove with recruiting. We should not have gone over $1 mil and we didn't. Not worth that type of money. I think we are getting a new oc that will be good. The staff is willing to pay to get talent

Unless our DBs get better (and coaching for those DBs) we are going to need another great OC... not just a good one.

I also heard we offered a million per year for 2 years, and that they 'raised money' from donors for that?

I dont mind. We would have lost the guy in a year or 2 years, he would be a head coach somewhere, and he deserves it after the year he had with us. Lots of positives here, we should be classy and let wish him well.

Maybe if Peterman and Conner were going to be playing at Pitt next year and maybe if Pitt's defense looked at all like it was getting better or maybe if Canada happened to be from around the area and he knew Narduzzi was looking to move on to another school one day soon, maybe then he might have made a different decision.

It's easy to see why Canada almost had to take the job: If he stuck around another year or two and struggled to get his offense to put up similar numbers (wih a new QB and no Conner), he would once again be out of the spotlight and much less sought after. If he struggles at LSU, he will still get lots of attention for other high profile jobs.

I wish him well... as long as he leaves a copy of his playbook and teaches the other Pitt offensive assistants how and when to call which plays.

tough loss but recruiting good offensive linemen is more important. That was the main reason for the success this season, good/great offensive line.
