Phil Jurkovec

The offense was definitely too run heavy and big set heavy. Against the couple of teams per year where that works... fine. Do it. But we need to be more balanced and the pass game needs to be opened up more. There were games where 1st and 2nd down were big set formations, and then on 3rd and long they changed it up, where everyone knew it was a passing play. It was frustrating.

I guess the question is if Cignetti was so worried about Slovis, that he didn't dare open things up more?
im hoping that when (or if) we get a few more actual WRs that we feel comfortable playing, that we should see a little more pass heavy formations and less "Heavy set" formations or even the "bunched" formations where the two wrs are lined up a yard outside of the TE..

I like a good balance, even heavy run but you absolutely need that 3 Wr or 4 WR set options when they are actually lined up a little wider.. not all the time like Whipple but you need that in your playbook.

Im guessing, or hoping that Cignetti has this but was just severely limited cause we didnt have a 4th wr who could play or remember where to line up.. and more importantly, we have that option in 23.

yeah, when i use the comparison, it wasnt an insult in the least. I actually liked Weah.. I dont think Means has the straight line speed (no Va tech jokes) but similar body build..

If Means is slower on the straight line, I don't know if it's by much. He averaged almost 20 yards/catch at LA Tech and had a reputation of being a straight-line guy. Granted, Weah averaged over 20 yards/catch at a higher level and with almost twice as many yards.

Also... tough to refrain on the VT jokes. I'll respect your wishes, but it ain't easy.

You seem to want to put the blame onto the shoulders of Slovis and Bub Means. Is it possible, just a little bit more then you'd like to admit that they weren't the problem and it was the OC???
Slovis and Means were new to the program and were going to be good little soldiers and play the game the way they were instructed to by their coach, the OC. Very similar situation to what Kenny Pickett and George Pickens find themselves in. They are both "rookies" and will run the plays they are told to run, they way they were told to do them by their coach.
Perhaps those people aren't as dumb as you think they are.
I have no idea what you're babbling about regarding blame. I'm not blaming anyone for anything. I'm discussing why they threw the ball less, and I'm not the one saying there was a problem with the offense.

I know you're one of the dolts I was referencing, so your confusion understandable.

I think Means is a football player, where Jester was always a track guy playing football. If you get what I mean from this.

what were people in charge thinking with those uniforms.

Yeah, 2015's colors weren't good, but they were at least "structurally sound." Script helmets; numbers weren't bad; etc.

But then came those ridiculous numbers:

I did think the matte helmets were cool; I'll admit that.

And I thought the combo we wore at GT in 2017 (only time we ever worse this one, I believe) in 2016 was kind of sharp, too.

But I'm not sure how you could ever wear those colors over these:

While I appreciate your attempt to express yourself, you have done so in a manner that makes responding to your point useless. I mean, is it possible to have a conversation/discussion about a subject without the person who is disagrees with being attacked personally? I do laugh at your use of the word "dolt". I am far from that and the two degrees that I have earned from the University of Pittsburgh would support my statement.
Lastly, you evidently have your opinion on the subject as do I and it does appear that we will just have to agree to disagree.

I would not hand the job to anyone. I’d like to see a “worst of” tape of 5.
I remember watching “The Penn State Story” show after they got their assess kicked.
Based on that video, I would have thought they win the National Championship.
Let the QBs compete!

But you didn't respond to my point. You made your own, which had nothing to do with what I was talking about.

Feel free to use your two degrees to go back through the thread and find where I put any blame on Slovis or Bub Means for anything. While you're at it, show me where I was referring to problems with the offense.

Pitt scored 30+ points a game with an average QB and a fairly average group of WRs. They did so behind a damn good run game.

I am a non-believer. I think Pitt is in trouble out there. What makes you think they can be anything but average?

It's just what my eyes tell me. Mumpfield gets open and had legit speed and shiftiness at this level. He was also raved about last Spring, and typically the players have a good feel for those things.

I'm probably less bullish on Means, but he's a big dude and he runs fast. There's something to work with. And he certainly flashed some of that in the Sun Bowl.

As has been mentioned numerous times, Slovis and this offense were oil and water. I'm certainly willing to see how these guys look with someone else under center. That said, I'm not bullish on Jurkovec, so maybe I'll end up eating my words because of that. He'll definitely push the ball downfield more, but he simply doesn't throw a good ball.

you know what's gonna suck? Best case, he's really really good at pitt under cignetti and this time next year, we are gonna all be pissed off, asking ourselves "What If" he had come here a year earlier instead of Slovis...

I'll take that over what I think could happen. He's like Patti, though, in that it doesn't even make sense to play the what-if game because you can always end with, "Eh, but they would have gotten hurt anyway so it wouldn't matter."

I am not understanding who you are referring too, and what may change because of it.???

Referring to Veilleux. Patti was great but his upside was what we saw in the Sun Bowl…a gritty game manager. One of Veilleux’s strength is accuracy and touch, something Patti was lacking at times. I’m not saying he’s going to push for the starting job off the bat but I am excited to have an option with upside in case PJ really struggles.

for some reason, i think of Means as a poor-man's Jester Weah, which quite frankly, i'll sign up for. not sure his ceiling though but i do expect to see him produce more next year..
I very much see that comparison. Some visible upside, but likely to leave you wanting.
