Phillipi gets a 6th year waiver

He has already completed two years of school. He is going to have a couple of PhD's when he's done if he plays it right. Or... maybe he will be a department chair when he graduates.

How does someone get six years of eligibility without even having a surgery? I am happy for him, but it is a curiosity.

The rules in the past were essentially, an athlete had five years to complete their four years of eligibility for competition. Military service or missionary service were the exception in this. In the event of military or church responsibilities, the five year term would start after completion of the mission or military commitment.

Until recently, the extra year (fifth year) was in case of injury. In recent years, the redshirt year is being used to allow younger athletes to mature, allow effective use to fill slots in a roster, or in the case of Olympic sports, a year off to train for the Olympic games.

On occasion, in sports like football, if an athlete red shirted their freshman year, and then subsequently missed another year due to injury, they would be awarded a sixth year. The sixth year was very rare and required an injury or other extenuating circumstances.

None of the above applies to Micky.
