PIAA Football Update

Don't other states do this with a promotion/relegation system? There are 6A teams that would struggle against 3A teams. They need to fix the competitive balance and get back to playing local games.
This is so true. This going by strict enrollment numbers, it BS! Just go back to 4 Classifications and maybe a Non Boundary class. I don't care how many kids go to say Hempfield or Butler....they aren't going to be as good a TJ or PR. Aliquippa is always going to be good, some of these farm schools won't be.

So just go back to 4 classes, base it on geographical areas for the most part. Being where I am from, no matter what the size/class, Plum, Kiski, Fox Chapel, Highlands, Knoch, Armstrong, Freeport may span 3 different classes as currently constructed, but they are all close and would all be competitive with each other.

Even if the games aren't competitive, you can drive over an hour to lose by 40, or you could go 15 minutes down the road and have the same result.

Central Valley just "pitted". Up 14 at the end of the third they gave up 21 unanswered in the 4th including a long pass in the final minute for a 21-14 loss to Wyoming Area

PIAA has the mandatory promotion rule going into effect this year. Archbishop Wood, Cathedral Prep, Farrell, Imhotep Charter, Lackawanna Trail and Wilmington all could be promoted/remain in 6A per the Tribune Review.

Farrell to 6A?? Are you serious??

Southern has a lot of kids with the “Coal Region Red Shirt “ . Lot should have been 2019 kids. Fleming should be 2019 kid as well as Garcia kid. I believe 11 all total

They just posted their junior high photos on facebook yesterday. Your timeline doesn't match.

Did they repeat 8th grade?

The photos that were posted on the wpial page shows them playing junior football in 2015 and 2014. Fleming was in a varsity uniform in 2016.

Do you know how much outrage and publicity there would be for a tiny school of their prowess to have 11 players who were purposely held back?

BTW, for arguments sakes let's say the whole team was held back 1 year, how does one explain their 2018 and 2017 teams? They embarrassed everyone those years too.

It's a routine practice in some districts. Wouldn't be done for just one class. Just saying.

Up there a lot of football families start the kids in school later than. Sooner or hold back in elementary

Schools don’t do it the parents choose to. Wilson West Lawn QB that started this year was held back in 6 gr. Purely for football. Helped him a lot . Will be a 2 year starter on a pretty good 6A team.

The team does not hold them back. The parents use foresight in determining if it is beneficial to start them in school later or hold them back before 7th gr to give them an athletic advantage. I’m from this area . Of course the school would not do that

OK I'll chime in on Elementary Redshirting in Southern Wpial right now.In my grandsons class (2nd grade) right now.Five boys were already head back, all went to pre school 2 years.Gee must of been a coincident, right! It just so happens that two of the kids dads are HS Head BB coaches and not in this district.Ones dad is the head baseball coach in this district. Anothers dad was a 1,500 PT scorer in H.S bb and the 5ths dad had the homerun record at local University.I'm sure they were all held back for academics!

I know a former NFL player that held his son back but I believe academics had omething to do with it.

Another who is the offspring of an athletic family (uncle and great uncle played D1), dad played D3, started kindergarten a year late when he was the size of current 1st and 2nd graders.

People do it everywhere it’s actually smart some kids it helps Some kids not so much.

I have no issues with it if the parents were picking up the cost for that extra year in school. So if little Johnny go to 6th grade twice, that should be on little Johnnies parents. If Little Johnny parents delayed his entry to school in 1st grade an extra year, then no issues whatsoever from my POV.

For arguments sake, let's say all the Southern Columbia kids in this senior class were held back in 6th grade. How does one explain their dominance last year and the prior year in the state championship when these kids would've been sophomores or juniors?

I can tell you this from my experience. The majority of my teams have been dominated by black athletes. We might have 1-2 white kids a season in places I've coached.

It is not UNCOMMON for many black athletes to start school early because parents cannot afford traditional daycare so they start kids in PRE-K a year early. I've had many kids in the 16-17 age graduating HS.

They play 2A Ball and have more kids on the roster than a lot of 6A teams.

A lot of people with less means start kids in school as soon as they legally can instead of other way around

I would agree with that. I would say there is a direct correlation between family income and Kindergarten starting age. The poorer the kid's family is, the earlier he/she starts Kindergarten.
