Watson needs to get him throwing in a rhythm. Quick throws to the outside, quick slants, quit worrying about the pass rush. Throws from the pocket. Just my humble opinion.

Next year QB competition will heat up , Pickett is not a given.

Who will be his competition? Patti the only other option, and we haven’t really heard any buzz about him the way we did with Pickett.

Unless there is a really good grad transfer coming in Pitt doesn’t really have any other options.

It's too late for this year. But they need to work together fanatically in the offseason on these kind of things.

We dont have receivers that are top notch in the least.

Pickett isn’t the next Marino

Patti is very good...they needed to figure out if KP was the answer and protect his redshirt. He will impress in the spring...have no fear.

OK, get specific. Does he have a gun for an arm? Is he pat white elusive? Is he accurate like Drew Brees? Why will he impress?

Well that's a big "unless." I would bet our staff is courting graduate transfer options but also making peace with the fact for better or worse, this could be our guy for two more seasons.

He’s a perfect QB for west coast, rpo, or spread offense. He’s also great at play action. But the need to commit to running the ball and taking their chances downfield. If you look at their losses they don’t do this.

I don't know if any of you are watching Aaron Rodgers play against the Vikings tonight. Well... he looks less than pedestrian tonight because his O-line resembles Pitt's from yesterday. Grading Pickett on anything he did yesterday is counterproductive and boderline useless. I think he proved at Wake that if you give him a pocket, he can be accurate. The bigger issue is did we miss Morrissey that much or is our line just grossly overmatched against strong and fast D-line's that attack and also send linebackers in the run gaps.

My guess is our line is just not good enough to handle Miami or Clemson's D lines. We will get more evidence one way or another this coming weekend. Clemson doesn't usually blitz anywhere near as much as Miami, but, after watching that film, I would fully expect them to attack the line of scrimmage with linebackers as well. I give Miami's D coordinator alot of credit for attacking. Sitting back gives our running game a chance to get going. Miami blitzing those gaps took our run out, but if we didn't run, the blitzers were on top of kenny before he had a chance.

Sean Watson should be spending his week figuring a way to develop some plays that are designed to be quick hitters in the middle of the field. We need some deception and need to line up our receivers in the bunch formation. We are really up against it. I want to see what Watson has in him. This is a great test. Lucky for him, thanks to the Hurricanes, he got a trial run last week and now has a pretty good idea what he will be seeing. In the mean time, it wouldn't hurt if PN could recruit a few quality offensive lineman for the future.

Solid post.

I have no idea if Patti can play at the D1 level at this point, but if you are looking for a positive, he has one of the quickest releases you'll ever see. Its Marino-like. Whether the rest of his game will ever even remotely resemble Marino's is another story.

I agree, i was saying for the past month that the most fortunate thing was that opponent DCs didn't just run-blitz the heck out us every down. Wake finally did, shut our run down but we were able to pass on them enough to get by. Not so with Miami and doubtful, needless to say, with Clemson. Could be looking at a similar game, worse really as Clemson is actually proficient offensively, and will look to run it up to cement their playoff spot.

It's been a long time since the last Marino.
Get a great QB, WR, exciting RB, and a serviceable team to put on the field around them, team team goes 8-4 or better and the fans come back!

I agree on the commit to running. They got away from that Saturday. The D was keeping them in the game and they should have continue to pound it inside. They started running and throwing the ball laterally too much. I understand the plan to screen to slow down UM's D Line, but they couldn't block the DBs and LB on those. Throwing downfield wasn't even a reality with the poor protection that Pickett had.

To be absolutely fair, many many Pitt fans would want to skewer Danny Marino. To be fair, he threw a ton of Interceptions.

1979: 10 TDS; 9 INT
1980: 15 TDS; 14 INT
1981: 37 TDS; 23 INTS
1982: 17 TDS; 23 INTS

79 Total TDS
48 Total INT

I love Dan Marino but if we are being honest with ourselves, many Pitt fans would find his Interceptions unacceptable.

KP this year has 12 TDS and 5 INT.

In conferences his rate is 9 and 2. Kenny has played quite well. As with all QBs, the QB must have time.

many Pitt fans would find his Interceptions unacceptable. not so...having the top defense in the nation left Pitt fans of the day a wide berth of leeway in this regard...

It's never been easier to throw the ball and Pitt makes it look like pulling teeth. Watson either needs to figure out a scheme that will help Pickett be a successful passer, Pickett needs to spend a TON of time developing in the offseason, or there needs to be an open competition.

Football has changed so much since Marino. Go watch those games on youtube, no wonder there were so many interceptions, the passing game was like wild gun slinging.
