Pitt beats Virginia

It was dramatic, but a great dual meet? No way.

I thought the UVA coach made a great strategic move starting the match at 184. That way, he got rid of two of our best wrestlers early in Nino and Meech, without the extra Adrenalin of them knowing the match was on the line. And, with his two ranked wrestlers at 197 and 126, he ended up coming out of those 4 bouts 8-8.

I also have to question again why Gavin never has our wrestlers choose neutral. At 149, for example, there was no way the Pitt wrestler was going to do anything than get punished on the bottom. He already had been on the bottom for 2 minutes of the first period and never came close to an escape. He has one escape move, getting to his feet, and every time he tried it, he got thrown back down to the mat by the much taller UVA wrestler. The same is true at 165, where not choosing neutral possibly gave UVA the final point needed to get a major decision.

At one point early in the third period, it looked like both Bentley and Rahmani could get majors. Both won, but gave up late points and almost gave up back points. The lack of killer instinct each showed is disturbing. And, it has been a consistent problem the entire season.

The match also revealed again the lack of depth we now have. We absolutely have to avoid injuries because our backups are dreck. I hope Kemerer can make 149 weight next season because we have nothing in reserve there or at 165 behind Wentzel (unless Crawford is much better than O’Brien).

That being said, kudos to Harvey for gutting out the OT decision. He was the aggressor the entire match, but never really came close to a takedown. The first two times he was on top, he rode the UVA wrestler for 11 and 7 seconds respectively. The first two times he was on the bottom, he got ridden for exactly the same amount of time. But, it was clear in the second OT that the UVA wrestler was gassed, and Harvey’s better conditioning gave him —and Pitt —the crucial victory.

It wasn't a strategic move at all. Their coach started at 184 because it was Senior Night and he was honoring his only senior by starting the match off in his weight class.

20-15 it was a great dual and came.down ton the final match which Harvey won in the 3rd or 4th OT. Great second year for Coach Gavin and the boys now onto the ACC and National championships
Kudos to Harvey. He out-gutted the Virginia wrestler. This was strictly a match decided by who had the most left in the tank at TB-2.

I don’t think the coach has that choice to start a match at a certain weight class.

Great to see the win obviously: couple of things I question
1. From the Bottom our wrestlers don't move quick
2. Kellan needs to do more than tie up take a shot
3. maybe a little more time in offseason in the weightroom except kellan
4. more and better recruits equal better training partners

The order the matches occur in is determined after the weigh-ins either by a mutual decision of the coaches or by a random draw choosing a particular weight class to be featured first. In either case, the succeeding wrestling matches will follow in sequence. For example, if the 157 lb weight class competes first, the succeeding wrestling matches will follow until the heavyweight class. Then, beginning at 125 lb, the rest of the matches will follow until the 149 lb match.

3.8 Starting the Meet In dual-meet competition, the wrestlers must be ready to go onto the mat immediately when called by the referee. The wrestler to be sent onto the mat first shall be determined by the premeet disc toss. If the even-numbered matches (second, fourth, sixth, etc) are selected, the coach would send a wrestler onto the mat first for the even matches. The opposing team would then send its wrestler onto the mat first for the odd-numbered matches. As soon as either contestant steps onto the mat, that contestant cannot be withdrawn or replaced.

It’s got to be both coaches agree or draw out of hat. Why would Gavin agree to start at 184?

We have had 16 matches this year, and I believe this was the first not to start at 125. What would be the odds of that being drawn randomly 15 out of 16 times?

Obviously not sure but perhaps Gavin's relationship with the UV staff led to this. He did coach there for a little bit, heck he might have even recruited Schany (their 184 pounder). Also no teams really bump their lineups so it doesn't really matter to me what match starts the evening. The way i look at it Harvey got a great opportunity to come through in the clutch for the team and did so. Who knows maybe he loses that match if the pressure wasnt on the line

Duals start at 125 unless a coach wants to randomly draw. The UVA coach wanted to draw and the weight that was drawn was 184. The only strategy there is to give your lightweight more recovery time after weigh ins. UVA has big 125, he wrestled 133 last season, so it makes sense they like to draw. It had nothing to do with senior night.

Also Mike412, the UVA wrestler at 149 chose top in the third period so Pitt did not choose bottom there. Pitt chose bottom in the second period in that match with Bulsak winning 2-1 at that point. At 165 they chose bottom and the UVA wrestler let him escape right away by going with the optional start. Obviously this was because the UVA wrestler needed more takedowns to get the major so why not take a free point

Good point. I didn’t think about the fact Gavin was an assistant at UVA when Schany started there. He probably worked out with him and coached him because they were close in weight. Probably agreed to let them start at 184 to honor him.
