Pitt fan rooting guide for this Saturday

All we really need is one more ND loss. Any losses beyond that are a bonus.

Yes I was saying it in the sense that all 3 pull off the upsets. ND is -4 this weekend and 66/33 per predictor. VA is 51%/49% per predictor. Those two could happen. GT would help to get them bowl eligible as they also have Georgia left and will likely need an upset in one of those two games to make it to 6-6. Pitt needs to have played as many bowl teams as it can. A lot of head-to heads left in the coastal, so any external wins will help the whole conference.

Nice post from the original poster.....the most entertaining thing in this thread for me is how many Pitt fans want to avoid playing Wake Forest....Wake Forest!! I know they have a good record and a great offensive attack....but that is one ACCCG opponent where we can say we straight up have more raw talent. NC State or Clemson have much more raw talent and that is what always seems to give Pitt problems (i.e. why we lose to Miami all the time even when we are having better seasons than them). I know we just beat Clemson, but doesn't anyone really want to play them again instead of Wake Forest??

No way 12-1 Pitt gets in over 11-1 ND. Pitt's loss to Western Michigan would be the worst loss by far of any CFP team in its history. ND's loss would be to Top 5/10 Cincy. And the rest of their schedules are similar

They'd each have wins over GT, VT, UVa, and UNC. Pitt's other wins would be a little stronger but not enough to offset the WMU loss

UNH vs Toledo (edge ND)
UMass vs Navy (edge ND)
Duke vs Stanford (edge ND)
Syracuse vs USC (edge ND)
Miami vs FSU (TBD)
Ten vs Purdue (edge Pitt)
Clemson vs Wis (edge Pitt)
Wake/NC St (edge Pitt)

Pitt will be the lowest ranked 1 loss team so we need there to be 3 or fewer teams with 0 or 1 loss

Assuming UGa is in, we need 5 of the following 7 things to happen

- Alabama loses to UGa in the SECCG. I think an 11-2 SEC Champ Bama gets in over 12-1 Pitt

Oklahoma finishes 3-2 (this seems unlikely)

The Big Ten doesn't produce a 0 or 1 loss team. Best thing to root for is MSU over Mich, Mich over OSU, Iowa to lose another then B10W win B10 Champ.

Oregon loses another

Cincy loss

ND loss

The most likely CFP is UGa, OU, B10 East, and Cincy
All you had to say is "They are Notre Dame". That gets them extra credit points.

Head to head game on the schedule dictates that you can't have Clemson win out and also have Wake Forest finish the regular season 12-0. You can have one or the other, but you can't have both.

Correct. But we want Clemson to win as much as possible between now and end of the season. So for this week, it is ok to root for both teams.

I don't think there are many fans who care who is in the ACC Championship game at this point. We just need to take care of business to get there.

That said, I would not want to play Clemson again. I think their offense eventually figures it out a little bit. And even an average offense would be effective paired with their defense.

Most of this doesn't make sense but I think you're trying to say strength of schedule would benefit ND over Pitt but Cincy would ultimately get the spot, somehow.

You're correct about the value of the strength of schedule. Has always been one of the bigger factors in the rankings. But the CFP has only excluded a one loss or fewer P5 conference champ for ND and that was when they were undefeated. The other times P5 conference champs were excluded was when all of the P5 conference champs have one or fewer losses. If Pitt and ND both finish with one loss, it is very possible strength of schedule would tip the scales to ND but it's also probably why Cincy won't be part of the conversation. Difficult to use it for one school and not another.

This is where an undefeated Wake would help and the ACC title game.
Maybe assume #5 Wake (12-0), #6 ND (11-1), #7 Pitt (11-1). If Pitt were to beat Wake would the committee really slot idle ND ahead of Pitt? Maybe, but chances are Pitt would leap ND in that scenario.

Noon Games:

Tulane over #2 Cincinnati

- Any Cincy loss is good between now and the end of the season. Just need one slip up to eliminate them from playoff consideration.

#8 Michigan State over #6 Michigan

- Michigan is the better team, so root for the upset here. Then Ohio State will take down Michigan State... and then ideally Michigan upsets Ohio State.

Wisconsin over #9 Iowa

- Get Iowa that 2nd loss.

Texas over #16 Baylor

- A team Pitt can leap frog over.

UMass over Liberty

- Knock Malik Willis out of the Heisman race

2:00 Game:

#22 Iowa State over WVU

- Just because.

3:30 Games:

Florida over #1 Georgia

- Chaos!

Texas Tech over #4 Oklahoma

- We want Oklahoma to lose at least twice this year.

Colorado over #7 Oregon

- Eliminate the Pac-12 from the playoffs for good.

Clemson over Florida State

- We want Clemson to win out and end the season ranked.

4:00 Game:

#13 Wake Forest over Duke

- We want Wake to be 12-0 and in the Top 10 for the ACC Championship Game.

7:00 Games:

#18 Auburn over #10 Ole Miss

- Get Ole Miss their 2nd loss, and hurt Matt Corral's Heisman chances.

Mississippi State over #12 Kentucky

- Another team for Pitt to jump over in the rankings.

Kansas over #15 Oklahoma State

- No chance for Kansas to win... but if they keep it close, Pitt can jump over OSU.

7:30 Games:

#5 Ohio State over #20 Penn State

- Technically, it might help Pitt more if OSU loses....but let's knock Jimmy out of the Top 25 for the rest of the season.

North Carolina over #11 Notre Dame

- Another team for Pitt to jump over... plus we want UNC to be 6-3 when they come to Pitt and possibly ranked.

NC State over Louisville

- On the off chance that NC State wins the Atlantic, we want them ranked as high as possible for the ACC Championship Game.

10:15 Game:

Virginia over #25 BYU

- We want UVa to beat BYU and then Notre Dame so they are ranked when the come to Pitt. Could be a possible Gameday if Pitt is 9-1 and UVa is 8-2.
Good post :)

I would add if you want to see Pickett get an NYC invite a big root against today is Kenneth Walker III. He’s sitting a little behind Pickett right now around 16-1, but if he somehow goes off today against that Michigan defense and MSU wins he is going to be the new big name in the Heisman race and probably leapfrog Pickett and maybe even Stroud.

I don’t see it happening, and certainly hope it doesn’t.

And of course right on cue Walker is off to a big start.

20-0 Wisconsin over iowa

2 Cincy 14-12 over 1-5 Tulane at halftime. Another dud by these bearcats.

It would be so Pitt for all this to go down and Pitt craps the bed YET AGAIN against the Canes at home.
