Pitt gets commitment from transfer guard Demarco Minor of Oregon State

I am no long defending the Capel regime but I suspect with our NIL budget, short guard that can't shoot is going to be who our next coach gets too. Hopefully he has some other attributes to make up for it.
And hope Minor has a great season as well team so we're successful. H2P!!!!

Welcome aboard and I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but if we are going to take players of this caliber, I'd prefer to get them from winning programs with experience leading teams to the NCAAT.

why not allocate 80% of the budget to a superstar and then try and piece a roster together with guys who are buried on benches and want a new look? Why sit here and pay for guys who can't shoot? I know the budget isn't great but the allocation is worse.

Do you have any examples of where this worked in NIL era college basketball? I'm not asking facetiously, serious question.

Get ready for him to transfer in a few days. I know I'm being a bit over the top with this. But this is what college "athletics" has become. A bunch of contract mercenaries who don't give a flying rat's a$$ about the team they'll be playing for. They'd just as soon play for a different team every year as long as they get more money.

I don't care about any individual players any longer. They can all transfer. But before they do, if they can help Pitt win and do what they're paid to do, they can transfer again. I don't care. If history means anything with this head coach and staff, they'll be losing again next year. Too bad the mercenaries can't take Capel and his staff with them.

8.5 rebounds per game the year before last is pretty wild for a guy who is only 6 feet tall. That said, this pickup makes me think either I don't get it or Capel doesn't get it. Low % shooter whose success seems to have come mostly from volume. And I hardly think this solves the size and length issues we've struggled with. I have no doubt that he's scrappy, but 6'0" is 6'0". Like, didn't we just watch this movie?

Since he's averaged 32.63 minutes per game over the last three seasons, I think it's safe to assume he isn't coming here to waste his final year of college basketball being some bench piece. Just not thrilled with this pickup on paper. Maybe I'm an idiot.

Maybe he can play decent defense. Don't we already have a short kid at PG? This is very underwhelming. But expected from the Capel trainwreck.

The only positive thing I can think of is that the offseason Capel added Elliott, Nelly, Hinson, Fede, etc it didn’t seem to optimistic at this point either.

Maybe, but Burton was a really good player already on the roster (I don't think we have anything close to him coming back) and Hinson was a complete wildcard (whereas the guys who haven't had two seasons off are likely much more predictable).

My cousin Merv Thunderfoot, who was cupbearer for the Grand Duke Simon McGloobGloob the IVth of Gloobenhelm, and Oregon State men’s college basketball program superfan, describes Demarco Minor as a “feisty rapscallion”. Let it be known!

It’s worth a shot maybe but those stars have far better options

It really would be interesting if the actual numbers were revealed.

I think you have to accept the reality of college athletics, the teams with the most involved booster$ are in charge .

I think the pickups so far seem to verify the lack of support the program has . Is anyone surprised ?

The schools have used these athletes for their financial benefits for years , now the shoe is on the other foot . Don’t blame the players , everyone needs to do what’s best for them . If a school can recruit over you , as they do , why is it any different than an athlete going to got a better situation for them .

the pickups verify the lack of support? We just gave the starting center from ISU $1.3mm to come here and play for a season

He was rated 268th in the portal . Where’s your figure from ?

He played less than 19 minutes per scoring less than 9 pts and 5 rebounds per game . I seriously doubt that’s worth 1.3 !

Jackson was rated 92nd in the list I looked at.

This has Dunning at 101 and Jackson at 108.

Would be nice as bench piece, but I fear you're likely right. Hopefully they can pickup another guard or two who can shoot.

So far for Pitt....YAWN.
Barry Dunning Jr. is not a yawn. 15 and 7 as a big guard. Jackson and Indrusaitis are interesting, Iowa State won a tournament game, hard to say their ceiling, but were top 100 HS recruits. Omari Witherspoon may be the most promising, top 90-100 HS recruit.

Now does that combine with Cummings into a tournament team? Strongly doubt it. That's not enough here yet but I don't see these guys a a stretch for an ACC team.

I find Dunning intriguing as well, but it's so hard to predict how those mid-major totals will translate. Damarco was 15.5 and 8.5 the season before last and then 9.8 and 4.8 last season. To me, that would be considered a fairly successful transition (going by those totals only - not his overall game).

An unsuccessful step up in competition would be like Sterling Smith (13.9 and 4.9 to 4.5 and 3).

One thing that worries me with bringing in seniors who haven't played at this level before, because I feel like getting used to this level of competition and then having another offseason to improve can only be beneficial.

I have heard Pitt’s NIL is between $4.5-5m but that’s loose and could also include actual NIL and sponsorship and not just pay for play $$ I also heard that PSU BB is $4m and that Purdue had the lowest NIL of any Sweet 16 team at $6 million. Totally unverified but this is a message board where sources don’t matter so take that info with a grain of salt.

Fsgolf coming to tell you that there's no way you could possibly know that right before declaring, in his very next sentence, that Pitt's total NIL was less than what a shift supervisor at Speedway makes in 3... 2...

You’re right you don’t have any idea . Look at the guys they’re signing , this isn’t a program flush with cash .

Better programs keep their core and take the best portal players to fill their needs .( or sign 5* hs players)

It doesn’t matter what the actual numbers are , what matters is what the competition is willing to pay and if Sheetz is willing to pay you 50% more than what you make at Speedway my advise to you is to put your application in at Sheetz ! ( feel free to to use me as a reference)

I’ve never said Pitts players aren’t compensated nicely, I’ve said they don’t have enough money to field a complete highly competitive team at a national level . ( their record and the holes in the lineup tell you this too .)

This is correct. However, just about every P5 team will be in that neighborhood because you can do "pay for play" NIL direct from the university's $20 million allotment. So in combining a portion of that $20 million + the booster NIL, most schools will be around $5 million. A lot of SEC/B10 and some others will be at $8 million-$10 million.

Can Pitt, with a payroll of $5 million finish ahead of Louisville, with let's say a payroll of $10 million? It would be hard but Pitt isn't necessarily competing with Louisville. Essentially 30 teams have already clinched a spot so they are competing with Vanderbilt, Iowa, WVU, Oklahoma, VT, etc....schools like that for one of those last 15 spots.

I’d love to assume that. Because the alternative is worse. But sadly I think it’s the alternative.
Reality bites when you see what is happening to teams without enough resources to compete . You guys want to put all this on one man while I don’t care who the coach is , because without the cash nobody is going to get the necessary talent to win .

You guys come up some imaginary numbers that Pitts paying these guys , but nobody can verify it .but how about these facts ,

1) losing your best player to Kentucky who loved his coach
2) the best player signed so far from the portal is rated around 100th best . Why did Iowa St let him leave ?
3) How about Minor rated #343 and 58th pg .
4) Dunning #206 .

Whatever number that they’re spending it’s not enough !

If you and others want to think that this roster that they’re assembling will be competitive without the addition of two exceptional players you’re going to be very disappointed. Do you seriously believe that’s going to happen ?

I’ve been a Pitt Bb fan since the 70’s and whatever the roster is and who the coach is I’ll be rooting for their success, I’m just not very optimistic about the future for Pitt Bb .

Well if they had that type of winning experience then they wouldn’t be of this caliber.
