Pitt - Toledo Gamethread

We never even got close. We wouldn't have stopped them in 40 OT's.
It’s not like we even tried. They clearly had three receivers to the right on two of their scoring plays in the OTs and we countered with two DBs. 3>2. Pitch and catch. From a QB to a WR not a TE to a DE.

Was the worst coached game of the Narduzzi era, and that’s saying something! He was Toledo’s MVP. No way they could win that game without a bunch of bad Pitt coaching decisions.

That was a terrible decision to have the tight end attempt to throw a pass to another tight end. Someone should get fired for that decision.
I can’t understand a coach creating that play even as a joke … a joke you never use …never run etc…

Run the ball and score

Having said that we had about 8 million times to win and failed on all of them.

I saw there at the end that the new AD went and shook the hand of Toledo’s head coach. Probably not a good thing to force your boss in a position where he has to do that.

According to ESPN play by play we were 4th down on the 47 which would make it a 64-65 yarder.

That's simply incorrect:

  • 3rd & 11 at PITT 47

(0:35 - 4th) Julian Dugger run for 2 yds to the PITT 49
  • 4th & 9 at PITT 49

    (0:01 - 4th) Timeout Pittsburgh, clock 00:01
  • 4th & 9 at PITT 49

(0:00 - 4th) Julian Dugger sacked by Daniel Bolden for a loss of 10 yards to the PITT 39

The Pitt 49 makes it a 69 yarder if we go back the standard 8.

Should have went for it 4th down and 1 yard. And the QB should never have missed the wide open game winner
Except he let a TE throw to a lineman to win the game. You can’t get a yard running twice against the MAC to win a game. This staff blows period. Just a bonehead move to let a TE throw the ball to a lineman when you’re a yard from winning then you puss out and kick from the 1.

That was a great play call and it’s okay to expect the players to make the plays. The offense didn’t lose this one.

Narduzzi’s defense was terrible.
It’s a great play call when you have a dual threat QB throw the ball. It’s an incomplete pass when you have a tight end throw it.

one weird thing...

What was up with the one Toledo catch that clearly hit the ground and reply confirmed it didnt? It clearly did ... AND the receiver still did not control the ball when he was rolling around. It seemed ridiculously obvious.

Also, the first qtr when their TE caught the ball turned to run, and we knocked the ball out Biles scoped to score, but they blew the play dead. Not even a review.

Strange game all the way around

It would have been a 66 yarder

Joe - Why not take a shot anyway? What's the harm? He's nailed 57 yard FG's with plenty to spare.

The stupid thing is that we apparently didn't think we could get one yard in two plays running the ball, so we chose to go to overtime where we would have one play to score from the three.

One of those is a lot easier than the other. And we chose poorly.

Yeah, but we'd have had one play to do it from the 3 instead of two from the 1. So you can kind of see their logic.

Shame on Duzz for not playing to win from the one-yard line in the second OT.
He kicked the FG, then had an all-or-nothing play from the THREE-yard line on the very next snap.
What the hell was he thinking?
If I was a Pitt player, I’d be extremely PO’d.

Well like I said during the game, we probably weren't making a 69 yard field goal, but we also were probably not going to be able to block their pass rushers long enough for the receivers to be able to run 50 yards downfield, so six of one, half dozen of the other?

If only you were there to explain that to Pat!

The next time we hire a football coach maybe that could be the first part of the interview. Show them the sequence leading up to the 3rd down and then ask what they would do.

When they say run a trick play on 3rd down and kick a field goal on 4th you immediately kick them out of the interview and count yourself lucky for dodging that bullet.
