Pitt vs GT Gamethread

I think we can put to rest the Penny to the NBA next year. He has a lot of work to do still to round out his game

Nobody is saying Champ to the NBA because they think he's good enough. He's one of the worst defenders I've ever seen in college, he'll get spit roasted in the NBA. Doesn't change the fact that he's not going to improve his chances of making a living playing professional ball by staying in school.

Once again Pitt plays a team very tough but just can’t do enough as usual to finish. They don’t give out NCCA tournament bids for playing teams tough unfortunately. Pitt has to start winning more of these games moving forward here. They are close but more times then not they find a way to come up just short and it’s just not good enough. Gotta find a way to get more wins.

The officiating in this game was honestly so embarrassing I don’t even think it’s possible for a crew to be that bad, seemed like they were dead set on making sure Tech won that game.

I think the stats were misleading early in the year, Pitt is very bad at defending the perimeter. It just gets overlooked when the opponents aren’t hitting their shots.

Champ was one of the few guys that looked like he was giving any effort at all in the first half. He’s one of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen play at Pitt though, quite possibly the worst.

Toney had some really brutal stretches. Made some nice plays, but also some truly unexplainable turnovers... and twice really bad fouls after.

I don’t even know why Coulibaly was on the floor in the second half. He was an absolute disaster today. His 8 rebounds meant little when he missed opportunities for several more, killed Pitt offensively, and played absolutely no defense whatsoever.

X shot the ball well, but had. 7 turnovers and 4 fouls. The charge called on him was so easily avoidable. Completely out of control today.

All of that and Pitt was still able to tie the game late. From that point on though, it really looked like Pitt was just content to get to there. The effort put forth after having a team on the ropes has to make a coach lose his mind.

Need to bring in a point guard to start next season.

You need consistent, smart and steady play from that position.

Until you get that, you are spinning your wheels.

I don't know who you think should have been out there instead, but once again he was absolutely abused on the defensive end. But I'm sure some people will point out that you just can't expect anyone to be able to guard a guy like Moses Wright.

By next year, Odukale will be better than anyone Pitt can reasonably bring in.

I thought ”he” played good defense on Wright for the most part.

wright made some pretty difficult shots in tight.

And why was Alvarado shooting free throws?
It's a technical

Coulibaly played because brown is so bad. He came in for like 50 seconds and did the swinging gate, Alvarado right past him then makes up for it by setting a very physical screen. Came right out

As the President of the fan club that's certainly not surprising.

Certainly not any more surprising than the fact that he was awful on that end of the court. Again.
Actually I'm the president and he absolutely played some good defense. 2nd half not as good, but why anyone points to him when other players on this team are suppose to be leaders, be better players, have more experience are actually playing far worse.

If you were to name the top five reasons for the loss, what would they be and what order?

Just curious.

The first half offensive dry spell probably in there some place?

I thought Karim used his hands well, was active and did a good job at times on the perimeter. I absolutely do not understand what the **** anyone who thinks he played terrible defense was watching.

I was watching the guy that he was mainly responsible for guarding going off for 24 points on 9-13 from the field.

I mean seriously, is it impossible for some of you to admit that he isn't the greatest player in the history of Pitt basketball, and that he has some limitations on the defensive end that have been getting us killed lately?

I think what others are saying, unless I’m completely wrong, is that he has been the strongest in what has otherwise been a weak link. In other words, coulibaly is the least concern on D.

That's not how this works. He wasn't getting abused in man. He didn't have a bad game defensively. I didn't say he was great or "the greatest", I said that his defense today was not poor. I stand by that. There were at least 2 or 3 occasions where I was impressed by his defensive contributions. I can't recall anything that was terribly egregious. He was fine.

Good lord, there were two defensive possession in a span of about four possessions in the second half where first he was behind Wright and yet somehow allowed them to lob the ball behind him and Wright ran around him and caught the ball for an easy basket, and then he fronted him all the way out by the foul line to set up an easy lob over his head for another easy two. Because it's quite evident that he doesn't really understand defensive spacing.

Which, given his level of experience at high level basketball isn't really a surprise or necessarily his "fault". But that doesn't make it not true.

Like I said, if that was good defense what would bad defense look like? Wright scoring 40 or 50?

X Johnson is undisciplined, out of control, a terrible shooter, always in foul trouble. He has not improved at all in his third year.

I certainly agree that he isn't our worst defender. But just because there are others who are worse than him that doesn't mean that he's good at it, or even average.

It's OK to say that he's giving us all he has and to still note that all he has right now isn't very good.

Those were just badly played no doubt
Unfortunately -
With toney shadowing devoe the whole game on the perimeter -
It only left out absolutely worst defensive player as rotational support - in Justin

Which meant a career night for their big

I would’ve rather just seen a lineup of X, Femi, Horton, Toney, and Champ. I thought Toney should’ve seen the bench more after some real head scratching errors, in which case I would’ve had Jeffress in for him. A smaller lineup though would’ve been my preference.
