Pitt vs Nebraska Semifinals Thread

I thought our serve reception really got us off to a bad start. Fairbanks was running all over the place trying to set, but then Nebraska knew where she was setting because she was limited in her options. And I thought we served their 1st team AA libero way too much. I do think that Nebraska was the overall better team, though, just thought we could have done a few things better to at least win a set. Disappointing, but it was really a great run, especially considering having 2 freshmen who came in the summer, and our starting middle blocker getting injured and missing the season. I'm anxious to see Kelly play a whole season for Pitt, with Stafford and Babcock having a year of experience behind them. H2P

Under Berenato following back-to-back sweet 16s, Pitt was up to averaging 2,859 for women's hoops, including some game with a pretty full lower bowl.

Here's the growth of Pitt's volleyball attendance:

Pitt average home volleyball attendance:
2023: 2,820 (ACC Champ, Final Four)
2022: 1,779 (ACC Champ, Final Four)
2021: 1,525 (Final Four)
2020: 185 (COVID, Elite Eight)
2019: 1,196 (ACC Champ, NCAA 2nd rnd)
2018: 1,140 (ACC Champ, NCAA 2nd rnd)
2017: 569 (ACC Champ, NCAA 2nd rnd)
2016: 436 (NCAA 2nd rnd)
2015: 435
2014: 533
2013: 470 (Dan Fisher's 1st season)
2012: 326
Thanks Paco. Your triple secret security clearance at Pitt always provides gems.

I love when you mansplain the fact pitt endowments aren't for sports. That never gets old.

Shocking that these numbers are this high.
I assume attendance is free?

Who says that??
I do. Pitt does not have any that are self sufficient. But slowly they may be building to generate a little revenue to cut into the deficit.

Vball and soccer tickets are $8 in advance or $10 on game day. Men's soccer season tickets are like $50. Women's $40. Volleyball is like $70 or something like that. I think students get in free.

I don't think any soccer program in the NCAA covers their expenses. Nebraska does cover the expenses of their volleyball team but they average over 8K a game and have been sold out for over a decade or more. Their season tickets are more like $300 to $400 and there is luxury and club seating that requires thousands of $ in donations. Luxury seating for volleyball is $40K per year.

What is capacity of the soccer venue? Thanks.

That’s either extremely ignorant or in the very least unfunny. In this country, soccer has more youth playing the sport than every other sport combined. At least those were the facts not long ago. I suspect Vball and lacrosse might have bit into the numbers somewhat over the past few years. So while you don’t care, plenty of people do. It’s not shocking at all to me that Ambrose Urbanic often is busting at the seems and over it’s 700 seating capacity.

I’m Curious about the softball and baseball attendance numbers. Paco?

No one asked you.
Haha. Well he does have a point though. Or maybe move soccer. Although the benefit to Vball is that it’s not impacted by weather. Womens Vball is the most likely to explode in my eyes because the men’s games isn’t relevant. Move womens Vball to the spring and I think all the guys in this thread who showed up for this match and didn’t pay attention all season are more likely to pay more attention when there’s less going on.

Nebraska’s defense was great but later in the match once we settled in, Nebraska’s passing was exceptional. And that has just as much to do with us as it did them because we weren’t making it tough on them. We too often served to the wrong person.

Just wanted to share. You had me curious about this so I looked it up.
And I was curious about HS specific numbers. So I’m glad you did. Lol. I’m a big HS sports guy and think there is so much value in it. I have never understood why there’s been this constant push for soccer players to bypass HS soccer. Not sure if it’s as prevalent in other sports or not, but I think every kid should experience their sport in HS, whether the level of play there is good or not.

LOL, I posted this to needle you.
Knew you'd take the bait.
I have no strong feelings about any of these sports.
Soccer moms are kind of cool though.

I figured. But provincial folk from podunk towns continually think soccer jokes are funny. It’s such a weird phenomenon.
Around here, the soccer program is pretty strong. The HS team is one of the better AA programs, and the youth soccer program flourishes.

As far as jokes, How do you know if someone is from America?
Toss them a ball, if they catch it, they're American, if they start kicking it with their feet, foreigners!

Not very funny, so you probably have a point there!

Not you but you know they type. Take here for example, there’s a couple guys, one from Johnstown for example, who always jumps into a rare soccer thread on the free board to talk about how much it sucks. Like why? What is it about soccer that threatens them and their sports enjoyment? I think NBA around the Burgh gets similar treatment by some because Pittsburgh is also provincial in some ways. The NBA is obviously a good product because the popularity is through the roof. I’m not a fan of it personally l, but I don’t rip it. But start a thread on the free board about it and watch how many people take shots at it.

I'd pay way more attention to volleyball in the spring. The Spring is a sports wasteland.

900

Its over 100% capacity though you do get some midweek games at like 400-500 people but then you'll have some games close to 2000. Lots of standing room. But they do need to put bleachers on the other side. They did that 2 years ago for some games and then took them out. The problem with men's soccer are the start times. Friday and Saturday nights aren't ideal since you compete with HS and college football. I had to miss Pitt's best win this year (over Wake) because it was oppositie Pitt/Lou football.

The girls playing on Sunday afternoon opposite the NFL isnt great either. This is another sport I'd move to Spring. The men wanted it to be a 2 semester sport but the NCAA shot it down. Mainly because most colleges said they couldn't staff another spring sport.
