Not an auspicious start for Pitt. Fenton overwhelmed by #4 125 pounder, 21-6. Match lasted about 4 minutes. Every point Fenton got was given to him by the OSU wrestler letting him go so he could take him down again. 9 takedowns in 4 minutes. The Oklahoma State kid is a definite title contender at the NCAAs.

At 133, Mickey played defense the entire first period. Fix escaped easily in the 2nd, but then Mickey took 2 good shots. Down 1-0 after 2.

Mickey got a takedown with :38 seconds left, then ride Fix out to win 3-1. Score now 3-5.

That was Fix’s first loss in college. He was 21-0 until then. Mickey now 13-1. With that win and Suriano having lost two straight, what will new rankings be? DeSanto beat Suriano and Mickey beating Fix could really scramble the rankings.

Another terrible match from Bentley. Pinned in :32 seconds. It’s never a good idea to go up high with OSU wrestlers. That is their specialty. Bentley tried, got thrown and pinned. Senior wrestling like a freshman. 3-11 now.

At 149, Lee was pinned in the first minute by a redshirt freshman ranked #5. What is very clear is that the OSU wrestlers are much stronger, especially in their upper bodies. Lee looked he was going to get a takedown, but the ISU freshman overpowered him to get the takedown and an immediate pin.

Gregg Harvey wrestling #4 Joe Smith, the coach’s son, at 174. Smith wrestled at 157 two years ago, then redshirted last year.

Smith won easily, 11-3. Score now 9-24.

#12 Nino v #11 Jacobe Smith at 184. Nino led 2-1 after 1. Chose the up position which I question because he couldn’t ride Smith after the first takedown. Smith escaped in 5 seconds to tie the match. Smith then got a takedown and rode out the 2nd period.

Nino got a quick escape in 3d. But Nino gave up a 2nd takedown, almost identical to the first. He took the shot, didn’t finish and Smith got behind him. Lost 7-4 with riding time.

9-27. OSU clinched the match.

At 197, #10 Dakota Geer, a PA guy and transfer from Edinboro, vs Kellen Stout.

Stout got a takedown but got reversed with 2 seconds left. Then chose top and got reversed quickly. Geer rode him out. Geer up 4-2 after 2. Another takedown by Geer in 3d. Won 7-2 with riding time. Disappointing from Stout.

Good match between #2 White and Thomas. White won 9-7 to make final 33-9.

IMO, OSU can’t seriously challenge PSU. Too many holes in their lineup: 157 and 165 for sure. I didn’t think their 184 and 197 pounders are potential AAs either. But, they are a solid 4th or 5th place team.

Mike, if you are going to insist posting about Pitt wrestling please learn how to spell their names correctly. It's Taleb, not Talib. Micky not Mickey. Kellan not Kellen.

I believe this was a good match for Pitt in that there are a lot of good points to learn from. Despite the score, Pitt didn't get blown out and demoralized by the #3 team in the country. Pitt has weak spots that Ok St does not have - we all knew this. This was not a surprise. But Gavin is in his first year, his first recruiting class is still wearing red shirts, the guys he put out on the mat today competed.

Fenton is taking his lumps as most freshman do. We like to point to the Spencer Lees and Kyle Dakes of the sport but those guys are truly very rare. Most freshman, even the ranked high school guys, have a hard time just learning to practice at a collegiate level during their first year - let alone dealing with the physical and mental grind of intercollegiate competition over a long collegiate season. This is why even the Daton Fixes typically red shirt. This is why most of Gavin and Co recruits have the luxury of a red shirt year. We will have a better idea how good Fenton is next year - if he can keep a good attitude through this one.

Micky was the example for how to compete. He was true to his style of wrestling and controlled the hand fighting, stayed aggressive, and won this match as much on his mental intensity as his athletic ability. He is leading the way for how a Pitt wrestler should " expect" to compete on a national level. Pitt fans are lucky to have this guy around for the next four years.

Another important point to note: I don't think Micky is so worried about Daton Fix when he is wrestling with Samat and Nico every day. Micky knows Daton is hoping he can be as good as Mickys work out partners some day. If Pitt fans want to see more performances like Mickey's and Meech's, help the RTC get some middle and upper weights.

Meech lost three take downs on essentially the same move. Two slide byes and a throw bye (I think). That was great for him to experience at this point as I doubt it happens again. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see that become part of his arsenal next time. I think it will fit in well with his athletic ability and wrestling style. I think the momentum really turned after the first period and that kid from Ok State knows it. Meech is learning so fast, I am really looking forward to NCAA's.

First of all, Nino is a freshman that is ranked #12 in the country. He wrestled a red shirt senior ranked #10 and gave him everything he wanted. He apeared more tired than usual, but he was very offensive in the first period. Pitt fans need to start riding the referees more when the opponents are stalling. Nino took so many shots in the first two periods and on top of that, on his feet, the guys first move after the whistle was to take two steps backward. Nino should have had two more stalling points awarded to him and /or pressuring the guy to open up would have been the advantage Nino needed.
Beside all of that in todays match... In his previous matches, Nino seems to be taking a very small step back, that will certainly move him forward. This often happen with very good high schooler that have dependable technique that doesn't translate to stronger and more technically sound collegiate or international wrestlers.

Nino has always had that Jr high double leg where he dives out to attach the legs but always finished with his head down and on his knees. It cost him today when his opponent stayed on his feet and was able to keep Nino on his knees with his head down to go behind for take downs.

After the last few matches I think I can tell Gavin has been working with him on this, and Nino appears to be trying to adjust, but it isn't natural for him yet. It's a change that needs to happen to make it to the next level but the in between phase is frustrating. Credit Nino for working on this and trying to improve. Todays video tape will likely reinforce Gavin's message.

The converse of Nino is Rahmani. Maybe there is something else going on for Taleb - I have no idea. From my seat in the distance bleachers, it seems the scouts know his tricks and since Talib has not improved his fundamentals, he is struggling. He is still dangerous and has the athletic ability to be very good, but he seems to be questioning himself more now. It isn't too late in the season though. Taleb could be one of those guys that goes on a tear at tournament time if he gets his mind right.

Even though he lost, Stout also keeps improving. He looks a lot more relaxed on his feet. I would love to see him trust his athletic ability and his offense more. He hold himself back a little bit from the top too and instead of pressuring forward on top, he hangs and his hips get too low - and it cost him today, but he is a lot more confident and making good progress.

thanks for that breakdown. Things are looking up. Keep recruiting. Keep working.

Wow, why the attitude? “Insist on posting “. What’s with that? Poster provides us with great info that is not diminished because a couple names are misspelled.
