That wasn't a first down, but that's a bad spot. He had both feet past the 50 yard line when he caught the ball and got hit, and yet somehow the ball gets spotted right on the line.

If Pitt had a punter who could punt, and catch the ball in the rain, I would say punt. Field position is important in bad weather games.

In a game like this you want to score first and put the pressure to throw on the opponent, which is going to be tough. Putting up an early lead will be huge.
